SJScrambler - Getting Started

Is the high hood setup just because you have it? Seems like going 3A would be a better start if that's what you want to do?

Get it if that's what's on hand.
I have always loved the high hood... I want to use it, but it might just not be possible with this setup. I have also entertained doing this on a CJ5 flat fender idea, but having this info, I might just have to sink the grille into the frame area, but redo the mount holes on it for where the fenders attach.

So... I "want" to do this, but I don't "need" to do it... the CJ nose will work fine.

I like it. Especially that last picture. The side approach. It would be a very unique Jeep then.

Personally, I prefer the CJ front, but you’re not building it for me. You do you.

I am a big fan of the "stock" look and would worry about creating a forced look given the difference in the dimensions. But as John N said, you are building it for you, not for me.

Not to sound rude but this is a custom build (note the top, bed, rollbar, etc.)
If anyone can make this look right it would be Craig.

Also, Craig already has more than his share of stock Jeeps.

I appreciate all the comments.

It is a CJ8 rear, CJ10-a tub, CJ grille/hood/windshield and running gear, CJ3B high hood and YJ doors all rolled into one.

The sticking points for me are:

1) The top and YJ door combination. You have a sharp edge at the top of the door and then the YJ styling... so military-ish and more modern.
2) The hood/cowl area. A CJ cowl dives down at a slight angle from the hood hinges to the normally stock CJ grille. In this case there is an ever so slight down, then back up.
3) Overall length. I am starting to think that the nose of this might be better on a shorter wheel base. In this representation it makes the truck look longer, when it doesn't really need more length. This might have to go on a CJ5 (76-83) project.

So, I will look at it, kick ideas around, but in the mean time I will swap the original grille/hood combination with the flat fenders to see what that feels like.

I still remain unsure. I just need to play with it more and let it marinate.

Not rude at all, we all have our opinions. To your point, there are a bunch parts from different jeeps but Craig has done an awesome job making them all fit and look right. To the untrained eye, it simply just an awesome jeep truck, to the trained eye, its an amazing custom job. I am sure its going to be great no matter what direction it takes. I just enjoy watching the progress, knowing its so far beyond my capabilities and patience to execute.

For me the grill looks too narrow for the truck, even though I dig the look of the older grills. Just my opinion.

Whatever you decide to do, please post a video of you taking it to your local auto parts store when it's complete and asking for a set of wiper blades!

The interesting part is that the grille is the same size as the CJ grille... the flat fenders and hood being tight cause it to really look smaller. It is quite a difference in how the CJ hood handles all of that and makes it more "puffed" out.

I debated offering an opinion, at first glance it was huh, the more I look at photos and see comments I can see how it could work. It appears the front is high in the photos. If so, maybe take 1-2 inches out of grill under the fog lights. I get that would be a tough effort… maybe easier than grafting the willys hood corners in… anyway look forward to your direction @certifiablejeep it will be great! Had AI color front same red fit panels and add 37”.

Would have never thought they were the same size. Thanks for sharing

I would try a graft another Willis hood from windsheild to the Willis hood that opens and shuts. The curved cowl at windsheild is fighting the boxed Willis design. Hope you can understand what I'm describing.

That would take away the stubby look of front, making it symmetrical with rear behind cab. Plus you would retain sharp edges front to rear

Just to clarify... width is the same, height is more on the "high hood". I grafted in a CJ grille inner structure into the high hood CJ3B grille shell so I could attach the fenders. There is a lot of work behind the scenes just to get this all to bolt up. :)
