Put it to the people. I vote 8" chrome waggies if you want that stunning red jeep look

Are you trying to cost me more money. Cha ching...LOL
You shouldn't be allowed to vote unless you have pictures too.

Dennis- you and I are going to have twin Scramblers some day. That's my goal for the 81.

On your cross member- I think with the poly biscuit motor mounts you should be ok. The problem arises when the engine can "torque over" against a trans mount that is too solid. Tends to snap the ears off the adapter. There's an easy fix on yours if need be. Simply flip the cross member so the mount platform is on the bottom. Use a compact Energy Suspension Poly mount, it may bolt in direct or you might need a simple spacer. Looks like it should all clear. That's a stout cross member- I like it!

Thanks Randy. That is something I will definitely look into. It's an easy fix and even if isn't needed it sure can't hurt anything.
Follow up......If I flip the cross member it appears that I won't have enough width for the Energy mount. With all the other Coonass engineering I've had to do this cross member is small potatoes.

Speaking of my Coonass engineering here is a short list of problems anyone will need to solve to do this conversion.
1. Placement of engine..to far back, farward,up or down and offset to drivers side.
2. What mounts to use
3. Fuel system, completely new.
4. Suspension lift.
5. Exhaust system
6. Rewiring the engine. new Painless wiring harness
7 Rewiring everything in the dash, a different Painless wiring harness.
8.Drive shafts. Length, offset. CV join on rear not on front.
9.Change the angle of the rear differential. what angle and how.
10. VSS switch
11. 4WD switch
12 Shifters
13.Lots and lots of money...cha-ching.
I've got to stop this list, I'm getting depressed

I just ordered a programmable fuel gauge to install in my 81. I should be able to calibrate it to my sending unit resistance. This way I can re-calibrate it when it needs it instead of cussing it. If this works out I'll order one for my '83. I hope this is the answer to our crappy fuel gauge problem.

And it's 270* sweep, just might be easier to read

I like it

I'll be watching for reviews once your using it

Not much going on but I did install a new differential bump stop on the front. Just making sure that the front drive shaft doesn't come in contact with anything.

Follow-up....I installed the programmable fuel gauge today. I had to empty the tank to calibrate it to empty and then fill the tank to calibrate it to full. I then used a electric fuel pump and removed 5 gallons at a time and checked the gauge each time. I actually did this three times. It's extremely accurate on full and empty and close enough in between. One thing I figured out after some confusion is that if you remove the sending unit wire with power to the gauge you have to turn off the power and back on so that it will re-calibrate itself. It can be a real PIA if you don't realize this and of course it's not in the instructions. I'm not sure yet if it's worth the $130.00 price tag but we will see. BTW, the night illumination is fantastic.

Its only been 3 days and I realize that the new few gauge in the '81 is no better than all the rest. I'm convinced it's more to do with our crappy sending units.

I also dropped the engine oil pan and the transmission oil pan on the '83 today so I can repaint them, check the internals and change the fluids and filters . I also talked with my painter and I should be getting my primed tub back next week. He is putting color on the belly pan and the firewall so that I can install the tub and not have to remove it again. We want the body sitting on the chassis in its natural position before we paint the exterior.

Good morning Dennis. Have you tried the Speed Hut gauge and sending unt? Mine hass worked flawlessly. I haven't heard any negitves on them. :twocents:

Have a great day and think of all of us that will get our first tast this winter of low 20s tonight.

Not yet. But I plan on using all Speed Hut gauges in my '83 5.3 conversion build. I'n not sure about using their GPS driven speedometers though.
Believe it or not, we are supposed to see temps in the 30's this week.

Interesting question... do you have heat in the garage? I know you were trying to cool it, but at 30 degrees, it is a little cold on the hands to work.

It only gets that cold here about 10 days a year. It's 60 now. I have heat in my shop but it doesn't do much good when it falls below 40.. In Louisiana cold weather means a lounge chair and plenty to drink. Come to think of it, Hot weather also means a lounge chair and plenty to drink. You gotta set your priorities straight.

I just turned my shop heater on for the first time this year. It's not that it is needed, the temp is 60* inside, it's just that I need to make sure it still operates correctly.

Here is a picture that my painter sent me today. I like it a lot. Base coats and cleared the belly and the Firewall so we can install the tub back on the frame before we finish the rest of the Scrambler.
