82 UK Spec Laredo Scrambler Build No 2

And some advice for anyone with a RHD Jeep who has the good idea to upgrade/renew the heater parts.
You will find the blower motor and the blower wheel are both different on a RHD Jeep.
So if you upgrade the heater motor via the Blazer upgrade route or swap it out for a OEM style one you need to reverse it or it wont work.
RHD has a white CCW rotation wheel LHD has a CW rotation black wheel, the standard motors are also CW so it needs taking in bits and polarity swapping over inside itself.

Ask me how i know :o

I looked into that as soon as I got mine and realized it was going to be a hot mess. Decided to put it off until the motor went out and it's still going (not) strong.

It does make sense to me on the rotation change as the box is mirrored but the motor faces the same direction.

Yeah well i bought a blazer motor and put a LHD blower wheel on it thinking it would work and the air would find its way through the ducting but it did nothing, just blew in to itself, hadnt realised either until i wanted some heat a week or two ago as it sounded like it was working fine.
Heater duct is shaped like a scoop and the LHD rotation cannot push it down that scoop, i need to find a RHD blower wheel thats fully intact or an alternative, my original one was missing chunks of impeller blades.
Looking for parts online that fit, this is going to be easier said than done but i have bought something that looks like it may do the job so i will report back.

This may help in locating something...

There is a lot of good information there.

I had found another good resource for blower wheel specs/compatibility but lost the link with my hard drive crash.

WOW! perfect timing for this information for me. Do you have a source for a RHD blower motor and/or could help me with swapping the guts of the new LHD motor that I have? Also paging @certifiablejeep since I know he has restored a RHD CJ7

I still have the original RHD motor but it's dead to the world.

So, when I did mine, it didn't have the lower section of the heater, only the upper if my memory serves.
So I asked @Dave The Sparky to assist and he found the lower and shipped it to me.

I know I did the Blazer motor upgrade, but can't remember what I did inside.
The write up/pics don't show exactly what was done, but that looks like the old squirrel cage on a new Blazer motor.
I know the heat did work, so not really sure how I did that.

Not sure how yours worked CB, i know mine just made a bit of noise and that was about it.

I have already altered my motor, that wasn't too bad to do, in hindsight i probably should of took some photos when i did it, took the one that is beautifully edited below just so i didn't put the motor back the same way that it came 😀
You just need to swap the 2 brushes over internally which means drilling out the 4 spot welds, splitting the case and removing the end case keeping an eye out for shims etc and where they have come from.
Drill out the rivet that holds the earth connection and swap the 2 brushes over in to the other brush holder.
I drilled a new hole and used a nut and bolt on the riveted earth connection as it makes a tighter joint and you can put an earth tail on there if you wish to run a separate earth connection.
Due to the magnetism the rotor can be a pain to get back in if you remove it but it will go if you guide it in as straight as you can.
Brushes will need tying back before the cap goes back on, i used some small tie wraps and just pulled them out of the casing once in place.
There are some springs that are always trying to go awol that go behind the brushes which is why they need tying back.
It will all make complete sense once you take the motor apart, i just bolted my casing back together with some M4 nuts and bolts and then chucked 12volts on it once reassembled to check it still worked and wasn't binding and went the right way for RHD which is CCW.

The LHD black blower wheel has a part number moulded in it the RHD white one hasn't ☹️
I took the photo from my blue 8 to try and find a number so maybe the number is on the back? i aren't taking the heater out of that one just to find out though!.
Notice the vanes are opposites!

What i have bought that arrived yesterday is this which is the closest i could find at the time, so i will see if i can make it fit.
Slightly deeper and the offset isn't the same but its fins are the correct way and its near enough the same diameter.
If i cant make it work then @FLCJ8 s link may be the future!

The only thing different I have come up with is that the original wiring in the Jeep I had was long gone and so was the lower heater box. It had a painless kit that someone tried to extend all over the place under the dash and you were able to get me a RHD heater box. So the wiring and the heater box did not start life in that Jeep... so it is hard to say exactly what the pieces were, unless somehow I come across that Jeep again down the road and can disassemble and check it out.

The only thing that is clear is that the blower on that box is definitely a Blazer upgrade one... I had/have a couple on the shelf because I tend to always do that in the Jeeps that I have built.

Apologies but for some reason (getting old maybe?) i left my phone sat at home, so no pics of how i managed to get this to work, but it does work and it was fairly easy to do in the end.
The 4 seasons blower wheel fits the heater hole fine and mounts on the motor great using the original nut with its serrated washer and i just removed the grub screw that it comes with.
Motor needs 16mm of spacing to make it work, i ended up mounting the whole motor assembly on 16mm posts spaced off from the case, this does of course leave a substantial 16mm gap between the case and the motor.
I used some thick closed cell foam tape and essentially made a squashable gasket to seal the back, as the blower wheel is taking air from the vents i dont think it will make much difference anyway if it gets a little bit of recirculated air from the rear as its quite a tight fit anyway.
The RHD heater box itself is mounted on some substantial posts for some clearance from the factory so the 16mm the motor sticks out makes no difference and it still fit in the original spot with no issues that i could see.
Not sure if LHD versions have the posts on the heater boxes?
Bench tested before fitting and it worked great!, did think it may need some reinforcement on the somewhat thin material the box is made out of but seemed fine.

Only other option i could see and that I did think about doing it was to drill the centre of the 4 seasons blower wheel by a depth of 16mm so it sat down on the motor shaft more, this would hopefully have the same effect.
I didn't want to risk losing the surface area the blower wheel sits on and as thats what keeps it true it may mean wrecking the blower wheel so abandoned that idea in the end.

Any motor will run backwards with some work but If you have a white OEM CCW rotation RHD blower wheel then look after it, its a very, very rare part!

Haven't been up to much Jeep wise seeing as i moved house last year and thats hogging my time, plus its cold and depressing in the workshop so just doing bits and pieces.
My poor old diesel powered 6 needed some love so i did the timing belt (easiest timing belt job ever on this engine), changed its oil, serviced the brakes and moved the battery in to a tray on the bulkhead.
Battery was under the passenger seat where i always had a worry about it leaking its contents out so its now under the hood again.
She needs a good wash but thats going to have to wait until it warms up a bit, but other than that the old bus is ready for the road and the trails again.

Embarrassed to say this was the state of the caliper when i took the wheel off...
Note to self, wash off Jeep when returning after playing dont leave it for 2 years 😁

And here is one rare motor for you that appeared at the workshop next door, luckily it was sold already as i was tempted to buy it and put a motorbike engine in it but i have neither the time or the space at present...
