82 UK Spec Laredo Scrambler Build No 2

As I am installing a YJ windshield frame and wiper motor setup on this Jeep i set about seeing if i could make the YJ motor compatible with the CJ Wiring.
In the end i took the motor in bits to see how it works as i wasn't getting any sense just testing the wiring with a multimeter.
Glad i did as the 3 prong that ride on the silver coloured ring were absolutley covered in grease so werent making a proper contact, so once that had been cleaned off and i reassembled the motor i got some readings.

Stuck this here in case this helps anyone else doing a YJ install or maybe just me when i lose my piece of paper later on!.
The wiring is like this on my aftermarket wiper motor which seems to have its own colour cables that follow nothing at all Jeep did....

Black: Ground (Case of motor on CJ)
Yellow: Fast Wipe (Connect to Red on CJ wiring Loom)
Green: Slow Wipe (Connect to Green on CJ wiring Loom)
White: This is the wire that makes the motor run on for the park switch and also needs connecting to the green on CJ wiring loom so it runs the wiper motor slowly. (you could connect it to fast speed and have the worlds fastest parking wiper?)
Red: This is the feed for the park position and connects to the black on the CJ wiring loom.

In order for this to work the black cable that goes in to the wiper motor must be cut and strapped out of the way.
If you dont cut this cable out it will ground out on every rotation and blow the fuse!.

My only concern with all this is whether the contact and the silver ring are made to take the power required to run the wiper motor, they seem reasonably chunky enough?, only time and use will telll as to whether a relay should be used to take the power required.
If it does burn out then it wont stop the wiper motor working and will just stop the park working so i aren't too bothered about it for now.

Have left the wiper motor in the park position with the splined arm loose so i can set it up for RHD which no doubt parks in a totally different place to LHD.

Received one very shiny painted tub and one very shiny painted dash panel, i can now crack on with putting it all back together again, hooray!.
There is of course the added joy of trying not to damage or mark the aforementioned shiny paint but its lovely to have her back in the workshop.

Muy Caliente!

Steering wheel looks to be on the right (correct) side of the dash.

You are in the exciting phase that starts paying great dividends. Keep up the work, and congratulations.

Some progress today, if i get the time and the painter keeps up it should hopefully come together reasonably quickly, finding stuff is the most time consuming bit,i seem to have stuff everywhere.
Not sure on the number plate its a big lump, might get a motorbike one they are smaller and probably less legal on a Jeep as well:unsure:

Bet Chevy never thought of mounting the ECU where i have it even if it is only temporary! 😁

Also found the stamped number on the chassis, easily found when you know where to look although typically AMC the person doing the stamping was a bit random with the positioning of the stamps, either that or they must had been to the local brewery for lunch.

Awesome story! Flashbacks to my loooong restobuild. Whereabouts in the UK? We've been there several times , will be there this Fall too, would absolutely love to meet you & your Uk spec Gr8CJ8's!

If you know the geography of England then Halifax is in West Yorkshire which is in between Manchester and Leeds, bring a rain coat and some thermals if you are coming over in the fall (or spring or summer for that matter 😁).

Dashboard required some extra cables for the engine light, rear fog light (which is required! here) one of my magic electronic 6 volt power units to run the fuel and temperature gauges.

If you read my posts on this little experiment you will know that it isn't quite correct but in my opinion its way better than a 40 year old original mechanical voltage regulator waiting to either fry your gauges or just not work at all.

There is the Radio/speaker wires, there is provision for a temperature gauge for the Autos oil temperature. A port for the OBDII scanner
I added an additional switch for the brake pedal for the ECU, so lockup should work on the auto with that in place.
It now has negative/earth connections everywhere to help it along as paint does not conduct very well along with other stuff no doubt.
As anyone who has even thought about working on one of these or tried to change a lamp you will know its far,far easier to do this now than trying to do it with the dash in place.
Looks like the wiper motors connections are going to be short too as i convert it to YJ gear so they are going to need extending before it goes in. as well.
Wont be getting installed for a few days so that hopefully gives me chance to remember anything else i have missed out and find like that long cable for the vent control which i had only the other day so its here somewhere!.

So other than small bits and a whole world of tidying up, i think all i need in larger items is some tyres, glass in my windshield frame and that hood painted and i reckon i can take this for test.
I can then maybe get using it and just in time for summer as well

Love the Guns N Roses tape at the ready for the inaugural ride. Now that's style Dave.
Truth be told it took me quite a while to find any sort of tape to try out on it and after all that the sound quality is pretty lousy but thats part of the 80s vibe i was trying to go with i guess 😁

Big leaps this weekend, other than i have got a duff oil pressure gauge (old OEM one) , got a duff wiper switch too (Brand new crap).
4WD and MIL lights dont appear to work, Rear diff has sprung a leak and the handbrake is woeful but other than that its not far off now.
Going to get some fresh gas in the morning and see if i can take it for a spin around the yard tomorrow and see what falls off first. 😁
