Cherokee Chief

So this happened today...

The original 360 is getting a little tired. I've been looking for a 401, but they're getting hard to come by.

Last week, I decided I'd just build a warmed up 360, then yesterday this gem popped up only 2 hours away.

It should make a nice winter project.

So, I'm at a bit of a crossroads on this project. 🧐

I've got a freshly rebuilt (and upgraded) AMC401/TH400/D300 drivetrain ready to go in... but today I came across the right deal on a rebuilt (and upgraded) 6.0/4L60E 2wd drivetrain, which would need to be adapted to a transfer case (probably a passenger drop NP241c, if I can find one).

I'm really tempted to jump ship on the 401, and go with the 6.0! I've spent about $10k on the 401 drivetrain though, and I'm just not sure I can let it go.

It's time to install one or the other... the Cherokee is ready!

Any advice?

Tough call - depends maybe on how you are going to use it. If you are going to daily drive it or long trips maybe the 6.0L route (OD trans would be nice), but if its a toy/weekend cruiser, 401?

Beat me to it… sort of. If you want to road trip or if your DD involves regular high speed driving, then jump ship. OD is the one thing that I desperately want in the Cherokee behind the 401 in the rare times I’m highway driving.

DD around town I’d keep the 401 all day with EFI of some flavor. There’s no sound like a 401.

I’ve driven mine down to Toledo for the Jeep fest, it will highway drive all day, it’s just at a higher RPM than I’d like and it “feels” wrong.

Opening the hood on a 401 in an FSJ is just so very right.

Thanks guys, you've validated my gut feeling, over the temptation... the 401 is staying! :headbang:

I'll save the 6.0 for another project (non-Jeep) that I've got waiting in the wings.

This Cherokee is coming along really nicely! It's needed a lot more work that I expected when I bought it, but It's going to end up being exactly what I wanted.

I haven't made a build thread, because I'm hiring out most of the work on this one. I'll do a nice walk-around when it's finished, though.

Cheers!

I'm running a Howell TBI, which is the only smog legal option in California. It's reliable, but not necessarily high performance. If the "Leno Law" passes, I should be able to tune it up a little more. 😉
