CJ7 stretched project longer than an 8 from MD / Pirate4x4

All good ideas

Here are the dimensions I said I would get :

Wheelbase is 109. 6 " more than scrambler

The tub had a total of 15" added to it compared to CJ7 / YJ

The distance shorter than scrambler for consideration of top fitment, rails etc , meaning the door edge to the rear, or the total body length From the door opening back, is 10" less than a CJ8.

An LJ tub is 15" longer than a CJ/YJ/TJ, so if that measurement is correct an LJ hard or soft top (or Safari Cab) is the right length. But an LJ is 9" shorter than a CJ-8, not 10", so there's some discrepancy. But the good news is you're really close to LJ length.

Yes there was a discrepancy for sure because as I recall the LJ top would not fit. I really think the original builder made it longer than an LJ for some reason but I don't know why he would. I will check again. But I remember that being the main theme in discussions during the sale.

So either custom length soft top or custom length hard top, or a half cab of either standard or extended length...

I like the idea of just a long bikini. But I really don't want a bobbed CJ. So I am still saying I advertise the Tub

Maybe I should buy it, make a custom top for it, and then sell it on to someone who wants to do the mechanicals and finish it... :)

My perfect beach configuration would be to remove the doors and hard sides and put on roll-up soft sides instead. Keeps the sun off but still provides an open-air experience, and the hard roof provides a place for gear or a roof-top tent :)

This setup is awesome. This would make a great wheeler / beach buggy.

I'd love it. It's perfect for what I want other than being a bit on the high side. I'd need a finished frame though.

Get the body and take an LJ or TJ frame and stretch it to fit the body. Get coil springs under it. Build a long arm 4 link for the rear. I stretched a TJ out to 101.5 (added 8.5in) and it wasn't that hard to do.

Don that's probably the best idea and for someone to get the TJ/LJ modern mechanicals at the same time.

The tub and cage as shown without the hood will be listed for $2500/BO. The tub was made from a completely rust free YJ tub there is no rust at all anywhere even the driver floor pan. There is one additional cage bar that is not welded in that it comes with too. The cage is just tack welded throughout also.

A few new pics of the boatside welding work and the reinforcements under the tub extension. The guy tacked in a total of four channels underneath the floor of the extension

Correction. Tacked means spot welded. Something I do not have. Incredible work throughout for sure and all custom

I really like that Commando top...

I am bumping this to the top for new member jpcjguy to have a look. I am about to post in your thread also, and also to see if you had any lucking finding this on Pirate, since you are on there.. Thanks

Thanks for pointing this out! I like how the footwell was extended. That is what I am thinking - but not 24" of foot well, more like 12" and then 12" of "bed". Great pics to get an idea, though!

Not a problem...and feel free to copy a few of these pics to post in your thread on pirate...I cant post there, but it would really help chasing the backstory on this one. And to talk to track down the original builder to know his creation will be used on other projects :)

Posted this on Craigslist and now asking $2200. I really hope someone who knows about it on pirate 4x4 or wherever there is supposed to be a build thread for it up to this point contacts me cause I never have been able to find the guy who built it, to get more info on the engine / trans / axles in it/under it.

Sold today, and it will be built by a guy about 45 mins from me, on a stretched 7 frame and with Dana 60s. He said he would stop back in a year when it's finished :bacon:

Hi, that was my jeep. I sold it about 5 years ago to a guy from Ohio. I came across a picture during a google search for something unrelated. Kinda sad to see it parted out like that. Contact me if anyone has questions.
