Current Scrambler pics

Nice area. I have been out in that general area decades ago. I’ve also flown dozens of times between Medford and Frisco in small turbo props. There’s an area maybe 50 - 75 miles to the west of there with some beautiful small mountain lakes that I’ve always wanted to get back up into that area someday with my Jeep. It looks so gorgeous from 10K feet. Have you ever been out in that area ? Looks like there might be a few older logging roads. I have to admit I probably haven’t flown that area in about 15 years so I don’t know if the fires have effected that area.

It got down to the mid 20 degree range. I was nice and toasty in my Gazelle tent. I have a Portable Buddy heater I use when I get in for the night and then in the morning. Overnight I used a 12V electric blanket. It was nice...

I like your navigation set-up- is that GAIA on the tablet? I just downloaded that app on my phone and was considering a subscription and maybe setting it up on a tablet. Also looked at ONX offroad, but think I like GAIA better.

Depends. There are the "Deadfall Lakes and Mt. Eddie maybe 15 miles to the West. Very nice. Have to backpack to those. There is also a harder wheeling area at Tamarack Lake nearer to Castle Crags which is South of Mt Shasta.

You might be remembering the "Trinity Alps". That is another wilderness area and you mostly need to backpack in. I have done many of those trails when I was a Scoutmaster. There is a lot of climbing so only the strong boys could go on those. It is gorgeous like Yosemite without the crowds. Many alpine lakes with crystal clear water.

The Red area is where I am trying to cover all of the dirt roads. I mark good spots to go camp at in the future. The green border is the Wilderness boundary - not supposed to drive in there. It's all very pretty and the only people I see back there are guys cutting firewood. It's an hour from my house.

More than half of California is public land so there are plenty of places to explore. Hopefully the politics are starting to turn around and it won't drive me out. We actually passed a bill in the recent election that made it a crime again to steal stuff worth under $950.00. Before that you could get away with it and not be prosecuted.

Yes. That is GaiaGPS on my tablet and iPhone. I have different layers on each so I don't have to flip between them much.

I bought a used iPad Mini - 5th generation on Gazelle for $220.00. It is the LTE model with 256GB of storage. You need the LTE model for the GPS chip. I sync tons of offline map layers, 60GB of Spotify music, my Scrambler parts list, wiring diagrams and other things I might need off-grid. The wife can download movies and watch them offline too.

The third device is my Garmin InReach GPSMAP 67i. It is a full GPS and satellite messenger. It has the Garmin maps and I could load custom maps to it as well. When it is 110+ degrees, the iPad/iPhone devices will overheat and dim the screen, then eventually stop charging and then actually shut down. The Garmin is rock solid hot or cold so it's my true backup. Although we found on our drive to Silverton, when the iPad starts to overheat, you can pull it down and put it in the Dometic refrigerator for 15 minutes and then get 2-3 more hours out of it before repeating the process. My wife got good at that on our trip...
 
Wheeled some light trails today with some minor obstacles, but it was more about getting outside. We had flurries the whole time on the mountain. Parked by a lake as we were getting ready to leave and had to take a picture

Let’s see if not using “Live Pictures” helps. I just replaced my bent rear passenger side leaf spring and swapped to boomerang shackles in the rear.
