Well.... Kinda got my butt handed to me again today but it wasn't all bad. I decided that I would try and tackle the exhaust now instead of waiting till after I had stuff painted and then scratch it all up... Glad I did since there was a LOT of scraping and trial and error though I think I finally have an idea of how it will work. At first I was a bit stymied since I am working with a collection of the old exhaust and some "scraps" I found in various dumpsters. The old cat and muffler are toast! I mentioned this before but the amount of crap and clog that came out of it while I was last playing with it was shocking. I'm surprised the thing ran at all! Well, not having a cat or muffler was a big stalling point for me. I found a place online that has really good prices but they don't ship to my military APO address. And so I dove back in the dumpster and turned up some unknown (car maybe?) exhaust that had a pair of resonators but no cats. The tubing looked to be near new so that was a plus...So then I thought "why not just ditch the cat for now". Well... honestly, I would have except for today's unforeseen windfall.
I was walking about the shops "junkyard" and brainstorming when I spied a really nice Chevy S10 Blazer in the early 2000's age group. At first I though it was just parked there but after a walk around it turned out that it had been turned in by someone leaving here that couldn't get it to pass inspection or get it sold. I asked the shop manager about it and he shrugged and said he didn't know. I asked him if he wouldn't mind if I played with it a bit and he said "go ahead but it's probably got a blown motor". I had to use some pliers to get the hood open because the cheapO hood release was broken and a little temperamental...But after that it was easy. Hooked up the redneck battery charger and then turned the key... Varoom! The dang thing fired right up and purred like a kitten! The 4.3 really IS a good lil engine! Anyway... As a joke I walked to the manager and said "Hey, would you take 50 bucks for the S10 with the blown motor?" He scratched his head and said "why, does it run?" I grinned and said it does, just like a sewing machine! He asked me about it and while I have NO NEED for another project he was glad it ran. It seems one of his employees had smashed a different Jeep XJ while using the forklift and the shop kinda "owed" the owner some help. That guy actually showed up and so a deal was made. He will get that well running S10 and a little help to fix the brakes and the shop will inherit the XJ. As a show of thanks the manager gave me the Cop style unity spotlight that was on the XJ, no charge for the weekend for using the shop, and best of all he let me rummage in HIS stash of stuff for exhaust stuff. In the end I found a near new and complete exhaust system off of a Dodge Hemi Charger, maybe 2010ish?? It was a take off when the owner installed a hy-po exhaust. Well... wouldn't you know it, the new to me exhaust has not one but TWO near new cats and a bunch of handy mandrel bent tubes. It even had the odd looking rectangular tail pipe tips that I may try and incorporate...

But despite having all that exhaust and stuff I was still shut out trying to get it all to fit together. It was a little like playing with leggos and not finding that one size piece that you need to start off. I know how I need to do it but I'm just shy either some expansions/reducers or I need to learn to butt weld exhaust tubing...haha. What the problem is is the passenger side cross member arm. I built it first and I had thought to run the exhaust through it, which I will, but because of the way I built it I will need to have a way to remove that section of tubing so the cross member can be removed in the future. I can do it... I just need more head scratching time to be able to use what I have. I'm off Monday as well so that will be the day I try and get it fixed and run more of it. I will likely then pull it all apart and clean and paint it all so it dries over the next month while I'm in the field. Then when I come back I can work on the other details that need doing.
On another good note it looks like the mechanical clutch may work out as it is with just some adjusting.

Plus I found a hand brake assembly from some unknown military vehicle ( I think its actually from a trailer?) that has an adjusting knob built into the handle. I may try and make that work instead of the factory foot one that doesn't like to hold...
Lots left to do and I'll try and get pics up after Mondays work... getting excited again as its coming along. Tomorrow is XJ day and I have a roof rack to build! Later all!
