Although I've never done it, my suggestion still seems a lot easier. Put the 4.2 intake on the 4.0. It seems like it just requires a little grinding and a little header massage. That way you keep the Holley and your current transmission. You could do that in a day (or two). There are many more, but here is one thread where the 4.2 intake on the 4.0 engine is discussed:

https://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f2/4-2-intake-4-0-head-14083/

This used to be done to keep it carbed. However, since you've already done all the work for the Holley you're ahead of the game.

If you do decide to sell the sniper, I may be interested. Send me a pm if you decide to go that route. I've been thinking about getting one for my red scrambler.

i just listed it for sale yesterday. Asking $800 including the fuel pump and filters. And the Schrader valve for a pressure tester. 0B29F297-6B66-4703-97FC-678D5B5D6818.jpeg

So the sniper is off and vacation is over and I need to start accumulating the parts needed to make the new motor work.

i had an XJ harness I pulled from a 98 thinned out and customized to mate with the CJ fuse block. Hotwire Automotive did a great job. I am hoping it makes it super easy. Everything is nicely labeled as well.

Dude, use the tag function, I completely missed this until now @gr8dain!

You should have been after me to track down my thread. Playing with doing the harness and PDC took more time than anything else in my swap for sure, so good call with Hotwire to make that part easier.

So does that mean if I do @tower210 I will get notified by the interwebs?
Depends how your notifications settings are here. My settings will let me know via email if someone tags me that way (along with replies to my threads or threads I’m watching) and if I reply on any thread, it notifies me of any future replies.

When we upgraded the forum software we lost all the “watched” or participated thread notifications from the old software, that’s killed our participation because people were so used to seeing notifications like that. I’d suggest tagging people that way if you want them to be sure to see something.

So I ordered a bunch of parts last night to mix the XJ, TJ, YJ, CJ stuff all together to make it work. There will be more to get, but hopefully this is it for the “big stuff”.

so I went out today and started taking parts off of the old 4.2.

The timing marks seem to be lined up right, so I am not sure what caused the problem back in the summer when this all started going south. But it does not matter now. Too far in. The 4.0/aw4 will be going in soonish.

Separated the transmission from the motor and mounted the motor on a stand. Now my son’s sbc and my 4.0 are both in the teardown phase

Started tearing down the motor a little yesterday. Did not get as far as I wanted. But a lit is off. The head is next.

The oil in it looked to be used for 130,xxx miles, but the spark plugs did not look too bad.

What happened, I thought this was a runner and was just getting swapped in ?
thought I would see what the condition was and get new gaskets etc. Freshen it up and make sure it is as good as possible before shoving it in. I am taking the head to the machine shop early next week.
