JK Crambler

As you note, for the purist, this is in the non scrambler builds section and I refuse to call it a "scrambler". So, due to its insurance demise we will call this the "crambler" as the tailgate and corners were "crammed" in the back and also due to what we will end up with it. GR8TOPS one of our awesome employees bought this 2010 2 door JK from a friend of ours who had bought it at the Copart auction and decided it was more than he wanted to take on. So, the rear of the body was pretty much toast, but the frame, drivetrain and interior all the rest of it was in very good condition. A bit of higher mileage but we decided to get it. It sat for a loonnnggg time, untouched, and we finally started working on it back in the spring. Trying to finish it up and get it to the Smokey Mountain Jeep Invasion to have at our booth with a new product on it.

So, it was a 2010 with the tailgate, floor and corners crushed in. The body probably could have been pulled, and straightened, and new panels, but we were really wanting to try something a bit different with it. All the sheet metal was going to need to be cut and pulled away anyways or there was going to be a LOT of bondo in it. So, the thought was what if we actually stretched the body AFTER the wheel wells, and make a longer overhang like a scrambler. Not do anything between the wheelbase as all of that was fine. But strictly on the tail. Yes, a bit odd and also ANTI departure angle, but hey, nobody has ever done it and might be interesting. Also, along with that, what if we put a half hardtop on it like a CJ8 and then that would actually make the bed usable. Here at GR8TOPS we already had a "halftop" for 2 door JKs and we also use it on 4 doors converted to 2 doors, BUT... it uses the horrible freedom panels. We previously did not have a 1 piece half hardtop for JK's. Already have them for TJ/LJ but never had a 1 piece half hardtop for JK's. Being old school, I just never really fully acclimated and adopted the whole freedom panel thing with JK hardtops. #1 - no matter how much you try to seal them up, they leak. Just the nature of their design, they are going to leak. #2 they add an additional $900 cost to our product which makes it a bit harder sell on the front end. So, last year, we did a couple of prototypes of 1 piece JK half hardtops going onto 2 door JKs. Turned out really nice and got a really good response. So, we started building a mold for it in January of this year. Mold is now finished and we are putting the 1st top on the this "crambler" build.

We are hopefully on the tail end of this but we've tried to take a fair amount of pictures, so will post them up here and try to update in the next couple of days.

Here is our existing 2 door recruit JK hardtop. It reuses the freedom panels and does have fair amount of cab room. Some side portal windows that are somewhat of pain in the sense of installing gasket etc. But, they look good. But, this top requires that you reuse your factory freedom panels.

Here is one of the prototype 1 piece JK half tops below from last year. Dimensions and proportions will be similar. It is a bit shorter and does not have the side portal windows, but gives a bit more bed space.

Cutting out the old sheet metal, cutting rear cage, etc. Somebody got a little carried away with their harbor freight plasma cutter.

We picked up the rear section of another tub. Thought was to graft the rear of this section onto what was already there. you learn all kinds of new things when you do this. The rear section of the white tub, was from a 4 door and we were putting it onto a 2 door. Strangely enough there is some subtle differences in the sheet metal that we ran into. So, biggest challenge at this point, was trying to determine where to join them.

We also started talking with Bob @ TNT Customs at the time and discussed having him make some custom stretched corners that could overlay both bodies and make it a bit easier and cleaner looking to join the 2 bodies. So, he made us up some JK corners that were 10" longer on the rear.

The floor in the JK's are a PITA with the deepwells and jack storage areas. so, we just cut them out on both pieces and starting cutting and grafting more. We also got the last 2" ft of frame section from the other JK. So, the thought was, to sleeve and extend the existing frame and use the same body mounts on the rear section of the frame to mount the new rear part of body. The JK frame already extends out past the body, but we will just use some sleeves to extend the new section of the frame. 2018100795154200.jpg

I'm digging and hope I have some more detail pictures of the body graft, but I'll jump ahead and show some other pictures. Got the body grafted on, and corners mounted. Frame is extended, and corners mounted.

Everything should go back on as normal. Stock fender flares or if wanted to put on steel fenders they will bolt up. Rear bumpers mounts are factory.

Primered, and we stuck the half top on there. This is the 1st production top. Gives the stretch some different proportions now... The bed ends up being just about 4 ft.

This was painful to cut fresh corners but had to be done before paint. I struggled with trying to figure out how to put CJ tail lights on. we probably should have and we still might be able to but I just cut the stock JK holes and so that we can use some JK LEDs or stock JK tail lights for now. JK tail lights are quite sophisticated in how they mount. Even after making a masking tape template of the cutout it was quite challenging getting the cutout precise enough for the housing to correctly mount.

Neat build but are you done and how did it turnout? I like the bigger half cab. Opera windows? The longer bed looks good too.

Cool looking JK Crambler!

Do you have any plans to "bob" it like what seems like everyone does with their CJ-8? :P.... jk

How did I miss this? It is cool. Update please.
