LJ-8

By the way- when I had my Jeepster and hung out on the JCCA, you could have sold a ton of these there. Might want to drop a hint...

Thanks for the tip... I've had quite a few people ask me if I'd sell them a the Hurst Commando hood scoop, apparently the originals all start to droop in the center over time. I've also had people ask me if I'd sell them a complete CJ Grille Kit or a complete Commando Grille Kit. But I only do this as a hobby, if I started doing it to sell things it would take all the fun out of it for me. Spending time molding things for people would take time away from what I really like to do, which is designing and creating new things. If any of my fiberglass designs are to become commercial products, some company is going to have to take my designs and bring them to market, I have no plans to go commercial myself.

But I do keep all of my molds, so if ever change my mind or find a reason to make more of something in the future, I can do that.

I fully understand, Jeff.

Although if I ever win the lottery I'm going to figure a way to bribe you into making a Safari top for my Scrambler...;)

There are circumstances under which I would consider molding a Scrambler Safari Cab, or a CJ Grille Kit for a TJ, or a Commando Kit... but money isn't the key factor. For example, if someone was building a show Jeep that they planned to display at SEMA, that would be an interesting reason to mold some parts :).

Talk about raising the bar! :D Maybe someday...I'm still trying to make it to SEMA just to check it out.

The LJ-8 in action today in the Colorado mountains. Today we did California Pass (12,960' elev.), Hurricane Pass and Corkscrew Pass. Some shots on the California Pass

This morning I experimented with the TJ Commando hood on the LJ-8. I didn't swap the CJ grille for the Commando grille, all I did this morning was stick some fiberglass replica Commando grille ears in there to see what everything looked like. Everything's just setting together, so it's not all in perfect alignment in these photos.

And with the Hurst Commando scoop...

I just can't say enough about the look of the LJ-8. And the Hurst scoop is awesome. Since you are not planning on making them for sale (understandably), I am now thinking I am going to have to scour the web for a scoop with a built in gauge pod.

I like how the commando "wings" get the turn signals up and out of the way of the winch and other items that block their view.

The main reason I was playing with that hood today is that I'm trying to decide if I want to build a Jeepster Commando kit for the JK, or if I want to build the J-truck Rhino-grille styled JK "Retro Rhino" kit...

vs.... Hmmm....

I'll probably never install the TJ Commando kit on anything, but the work I've already done on it would be a headstart on a JK Commando kit.

I like that j-truck grill on the JK

Thanks. The printout is scaled down from the original j-truck so it can fit the much smaller JK. The headlights and "pie plates" are the same size as the j-truck originals, and the center grille is scaled down. Then everything is moved closer together so it all fits. I think having less open real estate between the components actually makes it look better than the original j-truck - here's a comparison...

What I'm trying to do is capture a more original j-truck look than the Jeep J12 and Nukizer concepts. The Jeep designers did an awesome job doing a modern interpretation of the j-truck on those, but I want to do something more "retro".

Agreed. Those interpretations are really nice. I like what you have done to scale it to fit.

I love both! However, I think the J-truck conversion is more marketable considering the JK market right now. It would be a lot easier for you to sell the design to companies willing to bring a kit like that to market. I find the Commando would be cool, but I think people would rather have a CJ conversion on their TJs.

Thanks. Marketability isn't one of the decision criteria, I don't have any plans for this to be a commercial product, it's all about what I decide I want on my JK. Also about which one I think will look best with the JK Safari Cab, which I'm building right now. At the moment I'm leaning towards doing the j-truck version though.

well going by that then, I'd definately go with the J-truck! You already have the CJ conversion done on the LJ-8! ;) (unless you want to get rid of that, I'll come down and grab those parts off you form my LJ-8)
