Looking to appraise value for my Mom's 1984 CJ-8 Scrambler

Hello - my mother has a 1984 CJ-8 that she's looking to get an appraisal for after my father passed away. The title was in his name and she needs the value for probate. Can anyone help me understand what information I could provide that would help with an appraisal? I'm working on getting the total mileage (although the odometer probably rolled over at some point. And I know it has some rust but I'm asking her to send more photos that would give a better sense of how extensive the rust is.

For the sake of probate, unless the rules in Ca are vastly different, you just want to give them the lowest number they’ll accept without an argument. They want to tax you for its value. Just go with something like $2500-$3000 due to condition. Paying for an appraisal won’t help unless it’s required.
If you really need the appraisal, call your insurance agent, they probably know someone.

Thank you for the response. I should have noted that my mom lives in North Carolina, not California. Does that change anything, to your knowledge?

An ‘84 should have a six digit odometer, so it probably did not roll over unless it has a million miles on it.

I second the statement of going with the lowest reasonable value for probate reasons! All they are going to do is tax her, so aim low!

No difference in how to handle it. I’m in VA, so the rules are pretty similar. Whereabouts in NC?

Sorry for your loss..
If you do decide to sell, list in "for sale" section of this forum. Just from the photo, the condition seems to be a "good driver", condition. The Scrambler should be an easy sale.

Thank you and thank you for the advice. I will definitely advise my Mom to list it here. Seems like the right place!

You gotta keep ‘em in the Scrambler family.
Nice 8 and solid advice from all. Condolences on the loss of your father.

Sorry for your loss, looks like a beautiful Jeep. If you have memories in it I would think about keeping it. People come on this site every now and then to track down their old childhood scrambler and maintain that connection to their loved ones that have since passed.

Our condolences for your loss. If there is any sort of connection than keep it. There are so many powerful personal reasons we restore and maintain these Scramblers. My dad passed 24 years ago and rides shotgun with me every time I drive mine. If not you will find a great new home for it here. Good luck!

Thank you for all the kind messages. I think my Mom is intent on selling it but I'll discuss it with her. Appreciate all the help here.
