I have an extra overlander/postal top and rear barn door I could potentially supply if there is seriously enough interest. I PM'ed Rommel about it a while back but never heard anything back from him. If I were to give up my extra top and rear door I would require a new set be sent to me to replace it. Would you be needing to keep the old top after the replicas are being made?

Hi,

Sorry I wasn't able to reply. I have trouble using pms. Its easier for me to monitor the messages if its directly emailed to me. Can you email me straight?

anyway, please post more pictures of the top.

It looks big so we may have to make it in parts.

Rommel -
Is your July trip going to be taking you to the pajeeps show in york? If so ill see you there and bring the windshield frames we spoke about. I also may bring the Overlander.

The original top was made i pieces and shipped broke down.

1 - Top
2 - Side panels
1 - Barn Door
Few small parts

If you design so it accepts oem doors, you would not have to build or ship doors.

See my post above. Jim shows a top disassembled and a modification he did to accept oem doors. Well Worth your time to look.

The biggest difference between a Postal Top and some of the aftermarket tops that were and currently available is the barn door. So much more handy than the drop down tailgate.

Would someone highlight Jim's thread relating to his modification of the postal top?

Except for a Scrambler, not an LJ.......

Actually that's a thread describing the fiberglass "Safari Cab" design (pictured below), which is made from fiberglass, not the Jeep factory World Cab.

The Safari Cab and the World Cab look somewhat similar, pictured below are both. Here's a link to more photos of a Jeep factory World Cab: http://home.roadrunner.com/~jscherb/scrambler/

Wrong thread. He also modified a real Postal Cab. Made the insert for the door and added glass to the sides.

if we can secure the sample it is easier to make the top out of fiberglass rather than metal. Because if we made it metal it would have to be hand hammered custom made (which doesnt look so smooth). We won't make a die for it because dies are expensive and the demand ( I think) would not be enough. But if it were fiberglass, we will just make a mold from the sample and produce it :)

So let me know guys, is fiberglass acceptable? Or should it be metal?

Fiberglass world cab would be fine by me. It would never be an "original" worldcab, so I wouldn't think it would have to be exactly to OEM specs, but that's just me.

Fiberglass would be fine by me as well. Lighter (and cheaper shipping) and more resitant to dings in the garage when its off :D

Fiberglass is a whole new set of issues to overcome though, these can't just be single wall parts as long/wide/flat as they are and the flanged joints need to be very rigid/strong. The rear door with the latch and hinges is going to be very interesting too.

Think about it, they couldn't manage to make the metal parts single-wall, there's no way fiberglass can make it single wall without building in some rather significant reinforcement. This is not going to be as simple as molding the outside surface.

It can all be done, of course, the question is pricing of the final product.

I'd say some detailed pictures are in order before anyone ships their top.

we've done a lot of cj8 tops for the local market before. So we are capable to make single and even double walling. I'll try to post pics.

The fiberglass technology is a lot more advance here in the Philippines so I'm confident we can make nice ones. But again we need a sample :)

Cheers,
Rommel

Not to take anything away from Jeff, his projects are amazing.
But remember he is pretty much self taught and was able to pull off creating the "Safari Cab" in his garage.
I would think that a professional shop with experience in making Scrambler tops would have no problem duplicating the Postal/Overlander top.

BW - Isn't your GR8top LJ top a similar modular design to your Postal top?

I know this is just another request but what about a rear hard tonneau cover with access doors..make it bolt on also.. some of us like the look of the half cab .. and just think we can store stuff in the rear and be protected from theft. :)

Totally agree with this idea. I've thought about fabricating something out of brite tread aluminum to fit between the roll bar and flip up.
Kind of like this;

yes exactly.. I could get the steel and do it. but when it done with the right machines and rolling, it would look so much better..it also can be made for other jeeps as well .. its should be easy to manufacture and shipping wont be that bad.. :bacon:
