My old 1981 SCRAMBLER returns 25 years later

Not as much progress this week..........................work gets in the way

tacked some gussets and stiffeners on the rear shock towers.

Tacked up and fit the shock tower connector for the front

And the UPS guy showed up again

After lots of research I went with the Holley fuel injection.
For many reasons.........
It's self learning, no more tuning.
Easy mount, 2 sensors, a throttle body, ecm, and about 3 wires.
The ecm is fully expandable. with a new harness it will bolt to a LS or other muti-port and self tune.
Out of all the forum troubles I found. All problems were solved by changing setup issues, none were the systems fault.
It controls my timing.
It has auxiliary inputs and outputs for fans, ac, and extras.
It's capable of running boost.........BLOWER.........turbo..........or supercharger

what about... Twin Turbo AND a Supercharger!!! ;)

Installed the 14 bolt ARB today

Welded all of the rear shock tower gusts and all but 2 gussets on the rear end (I have to make them yet)

That thing is HEAVY
And BIG
Had to grind the housing in 3 spots and the cover in 2 spots to make it fit

Cleaned and painted the cover.

Welded, ground, cleaned, and painted the rear lower links

what about... Twin Turbo AND a Supercharger!!! ;)

Twin turbo will hit the steering shaft and fenders, and the super charger will hit the new shock towers....................But a blower will fit under the hood

youre not trying hard enough then... I'd make it all fit.

Had to get sidetracked a bit on the Scrambler upgrade. ( trying to keep some brownie points with the wife):fingerscrossed:

The hood on her TJ was loosing clearcoat every time it got washed......................

Soooo back to the booth I went.............should be red this weekend.

And as long as I was in there....................

The engine tins for the VW got painted

And the half cab for the scrambler

Thanks for the link, I missed that one. We have a '72 standard beetle. Motor was puking oil out of the passenger side push rod tubes last summer so we need the motor looked at this spring if you know any local VW shops you trust.

/end hi-jack/

I didn't like how the top looked with the satin black, and it had some blotches and lines with the original paint tried to bleed through. So I put on some texture and sprayed it again last night.

The hi-tec texture

And now I really like it, much better

Definitely looks better with the texture. It may just be the picture but the paint looks a little more flatter (Color) than the original black.

I think the original was still a little wet, which would give it some gloss.

Yesterday I did a little more painting. My mom needed a bumper cover for her Impala, so we sprayed that.

And The hood for the TJ

Which for some reason ended up full of dirt.

So today I wet sanded the clear and sprayed on some more.

In between spraying paint my A.D.D. kicked in and I started on the fuel injection.

I did a "poor mans" electric in tank pump.

I used a Chevy pump out of a truck that I scrapped, and bulk head fittings to get the needed plumbing and wires through the tank.

To get the fuel through I used parker push-lok hose and a bulkhead.

For the wires I used a 1/4" compression fitting. Inserted a piece of 1/4" od tubing that is the same i.d. as 12ga gasoline proof wire. ran it through a 90* fitting and tighted it all up.

The trick is getting the nuts and lock washers on the inside of the bulkhead fittings. I drilled the holes and put a chamfer for a o-ring. Then run the wire (or hose) through my hole and out the sender hole. that way the lock washer and nut can be fed through the sender hole and guided on to be tightened. Once the bulkheads were in, wires connected, and pump installed I had to figure out how to get it in the tank.

Fitting it in wasn't that hard...........but how do I get it out if it goes bad. It has to come out bottom first. To solve that I clamped a piece of wire to the pump as a "pull rope".

So I didn't have to fish the wire out of the sender hole I clamped it to the old pickup tube which will now be my return.

Once it was all back in with the sender float pointed away from the pump I tightened the sender down and put on the hoses.

Last thing I added the 10 micron filter and test ran the pump.
