"Not Alaskan" Postal CJ8 Hardtop idea

Jeff,

Are the front fender mounted directionals that I see on these availible in the aftermarket? I have seen them on all the WCs from Oz that are on this site as well. Since my winch plate blocks the stock front directionals, I would like to add something like that. Very cool, as are the euro spec tail lights on your WC. Thoughts?

I'm looking for them as well as one of mine is cracked. The closest thing i could find is this:

www.Hella.com.au
Click online catalog on the RHS of the page.
Enter 2419 in the search.

It is basically the same, but with amber and red lenses instead of amber and clear. You guys in the US might be able to get away with that on the front, but we can't over here. SO, thought about using the little round lights as indicators on the front, and the park lights in the main beam, and have a smaller indicator on the fender, possibly even sunk into the bonnet.

So here is the plan as I know it. I will buy a Jeep unlimited, and do the DJ, postal top with windows. I will do the Sloping top near the front, or may opt for a suburban top, trying to decide weather to use the side windows from the un limited or postal. The sides will be wellded to the body like a panel van. Not much time or weather for top off in Oregon. And I always have my Scrambler if I want to go topless

I like that plan! When does the build thread start?

Jeff could u do another mock up drawing of n unlimited with postal top, Please:thumbsup:

Sorry, must have missed this request until now. Do you mean Alaskan Postal? Or DJ Postal? Here's both...

Here's an interesting one that just showed up in the Pick N Pull... it seems to have started life as a Postal DJ5, an early model - note the CJ-style grille. But someone's converted it to left hand drive. It's also 4WD with front drum brakes, I don't know if that's factory or conversion. Also check the cool side vents, those could easily be cut out of this tub and added to a CJ-7 or Scrambler tub. I'm pretty sure all DJ postals had them, but not 100% sure. Rear door is usable for the next Gaucho tailgate... anyone?

too late

Well I bought the Postal from Eric, so I have the perfect jeep soon. I may have to build one of these tops for Madjp62, so he will stop whinning

I can't believe I cheaped out on that top. You bought it from the guy who was bringing it down from Ak right? It already has windows in it? He responded to an old PM of mine where he offered it to me before he posted it here. I totally cheaped out as I'd already spent money restoring my ACME and way too much on the diesel conversion. I guess I figured the $750 would turn into $2k by the time I shipped it east.:banghead: Hopefully someday (soon!)

Good luck with it, I hope it comes out awesome!

Jeff, I'm not well versed in DJs, but is it possible that it's a regular -5 that someone swapped tubs on? left hand drive and 4wd seems like a lot to do to a DJ, but a tub swap on a -5 seems more sensible.

Did you see something on the frame/body that made it obvious someone did major surgery to a DJ?

I'll likely never have one, but I always thought it would be fun to do a 4wd DJ up as a light trail runner/around town driver.

Don't think so, Eric got in touch with me when he bought it (Dave got it off him) and it was found locally, Eric didn't bring it down from AK. It doesn't have windows either.

The dash was definitely cut up to be converted from RHD to LHD, I would think if they did a tub swap they'd use the CJ-5 dash because it would already be correct for LHD. I didn't kneel down in the mud this morning to check the frame and steering gear, but I suppose it's possible it could be a CJ5 with a tub swap. If it's still in the yard next time I'm there I'll look underneath.

I agree it would be fun to have one for knocking around town. I saw photos of one once where the guy converted the sliding doors into swinging doors, it worked out pretty cool. I think I saved the photos somewhere, just in case I ever decide to do a DJ project.

...
The stampings were also picked up by licensees which assembled CKD Jeeps built in Toledo; for example the AIL Storm, as I have heard it, was a "YJ-L" built in Toledo and shipped CKD to Israel for assembly....
Jeff

I believe that the sheet metal of the Storm was locally prodaction of Automotive Industries Ltd [http://www.ail.co.il/ail-open/default.asp], in Israel, At list the top and weird front.
We call it 'Crying Storm' and most of the owners just hate it and change it to the YJ hood, grill and fender.
My rig is still 'crying'.

Wow, interesting front end design! I've only seen Storms with YJ-like front ends, like the photo in post 41 of this thread. Looks like those are "CJ-10" fenders, and a totally different grill and hood.

Nice to know the parts were stamped in Israel, we're trying to piece together all of the history of the various World Cab variants.

This is a very cool looking top! I would love to know the details on this!!

I have no idea, I'v just collected some pics' from the local buy/sale web site.
It is reasonable to assume that thay had World Cab hardtop that was totally rusted [thay all do here…] and the owners just ordered soft top from the variety of designs and manufacturers we have here.

Have a link to any of those soft tops for sale?

bigwalton,

At the local forum many just idolize the Bestop from U.s.a [http://www.bestop.com/index.php?c=1] as the best, but it's vary expansive here in Israel, so in the pic's is probably guys that went to the nearby canvas sewing workshop or upholsterer and ask for the cheapest solution… the black one look like "Shimshonit" which is some kind of cheap plastic material and the gray look like canvas.

I dont have any clue about the prices but 3 local recommended workshops in the forum [sorry, they don't have English version] are:
