Official CJ-8.com bourbon thread

Had some Russell's Reserve 1998 on Christmas Eve. Will be bringing William Larue Weller 2015 to SD.

Bulleitt Bourbon homemade egg nog. 50% bourbon by volume. Hell yeah. Family recipe improved with the use of the Bulleitt.

If you think you don't like egg nog. You haven't had proper egg nog.

Understood if you started with the bottle full. [emoji3]

Had my first Pappy tonight. Pairs well with fresh made pork rinds.

Wow, Dain. Very nice! I can almost taste it.

I went "cheap" and got the 10 year Pappy. Could not justify the others for my palette. But this one was very very good. Never had Pappy before.

If you aren't familiar with Midwest Grain Products (MGP) you should be. I am a rye fan and enjoy Bulleit, which they make. Think of the below as good information to know and huge list you can cross reference as a decent shopping list. Personally, I find there are some bourbons below that are great bang for the buck and are, in large part, the same as their higher priced "boutique" or "small batch" marketed brethren. Happy drinking!

If you are a bourbon/rye fan this is good reading:

From our good friends at MGP:

Midwest Grain Products Ingredients (MGP), Lawrenceburg, IN. Formerly Lawrenceburg Distillers Indiana (LDI) and before that owned by the now dissolved Seagram's company, this large distillery near the Kentucky border makes bourbon, rye, corn, wheat and malt whiskeys as well as gin and neutral spirits. While they don't market any of their own whiskey (save for some very limited special release bourbons - Metze's Medley and Metze's Select), the distillery makes whiskey for a growing number of other labels. It's hard to always tell which companies are using MGP as their source, but the following is a listing of whiskeys that are likely distilled by MGP:

Either of these are fine adult beverages. I prefer the Cask 113 proof. Really good and smooth! :)

Well, since Buffalo Trace decided to axe my Old Charter 10, they can kiss my foot. I've never been able to find a bottle of Charter 101 to try it, and the 8 isn't even showing up on the shelves around here anymore. I actually emailed them recently asking if they'd just gone ahead and killed the brand.

I drink Scotch most of the time now anyway. Have one full bottle of Charter 10 left for a special occasion.

Try Eagle Rare from Buffalo Trace. For an everyday whisky it is very good.

Trying to find my George T. Stagg is getting really had. Virginia ABC really is just not that consumer centered. It is take what they have or leave it. Problem with a Govt. run store.

Had another Michter's with dinner. Now onto the Basil.

This thread prompted me to contact Buffalo Trace and beat them up over the Old Charter.

The 8 shortage was apparently a temporary one, and the 101 is available, but only in Bama and LA. Guess I'll have to stop on the way to the beach this year and pick some up to try.

My sister is a caterer and did a Kentucky Derby party last week. Had about 100 people, and they went through 4 handles of Maker's, two handles of Woodford, and two handles of Crown. Also had 1 1/2 cases of wine and probably 100 beers. I bartended and these people got HAMMERED. I've been at some parties that had some heavy drinking but those folks put away some booze.
