Corvairs from the early 1960s. Rear engine, air cooled Chevrolets. Nice cars but they got a bad rap when one topped a mountain with a headwind and flipped.

Well, that is a new story that I haven't heard before... The NHTSI in 71 or 72 found that 'vairs were as safe or safer than comparable vehicles of their day. The biggest problem with them was people were too stupid to keep the pressure in the tires at the right level. And then a rebodied Falcon came out in mid '64 called the Mustang and the end was in sight. 145ci air cooled engine even turboed, at the time could not match the horsepower of a 260/289...
The red car is a '63 Monza w/ 102HP/ PG.
The blue is a '61 Lakewood w/ a '66 110 HP/ PG.
The red one was one of the top three at this years Peoples Choice at the National Convention in Knoxville this past summer.
They are fun cars and get more attn at shows that the vettes I park next too!
The Scrambler goes to the same shows at times and gets lots of attention too!

I currently have 10 Honda ATV's in the yard. 5 of them are mine, the others have been left for me to fix. Needless to say the Jeeps are being neglected.
Anyhow, I've really found it interesting looking into these engines, and so many parts remain the same, but have different part numbers, For example, a crank from a 2007 420 Rancher is $100 more than the crank from a 2012 420 Rancher. Parts are identical, but have different part numbers.
Anyhow, in doing some nosing around in parts schematics, I discovered that the cranks on the 420's and the 2012-2013 500 Foremen are the same, and sure enough, you can swap a 500 top end on a 420 bottom end, add fuel (programmer) and you have a 500 Rancher.
Soooo, just rebuild a Rancher AT (automatic) for the wife. Did an 18% gear reduction in it (stock secondary gears from a footshift Rancher), 500 top end, all using stock Honda parts. She'll have a 500 with lower gears in the little Rancher frame. Should be pretty sweet little rig. My buddies said I need to take out a term life policy on it before she rides it (she likes to go fast).
Picked up a 420 footshift last week that needs an engine rebuild. Will use the old 420AT cylinder etc to fix the footshift and resell it. At least parts for these are cheap and I can pull a motor and rebuild it in a day, unlike the Jeeps.

LOL. New top end parts will be here today but I'm visiting with the inlaws this weekend so won't be able to wrench till next week.
Here's the Foreman pod light on a Rancher. Had to cut the gauge bracket in half, an weld 1/2 of the Foreman pod supports to it. Not perfect, but close enough. The Ranchers don't have a top light, and where we ride the bottom lights get covered in mud pretty quick. I can't see worth a crap so I have HID's and LED's on all the ATV's so I can see at night.

My bag yard seriously looks like Sanford and Son at the moment. Pure 100% Redneck.
