Question for the XJ guys

My daughter has an 2000 XJ with a problem I havent come across before. Initially the Jeep drives fine till she comes to a stop. Then when she pulls out the engine revs and it feels almost like the trans is slipping but its not.

If you manully shift it through the gears it works just fine. The only code it shows is for the crank position sensor and it was only once while this is a persistent problem. Figured Id ask here before taking it somewhere considering theres a couple XJers on here.

We had a similar problem on a 97 XJ. We flushed, replaced filters, replaced sensors, and it turned out to be the front pump. It was cheaper to find a used low mileage trans than it was to rebuild it.

I came across this years ago. I thought I remember having to replace a shift solenoid. I think I remember their being a bulletin on it, but this was like 12 years ago. Call a Dodge dealer with your vin and they should be able to tell you.

That's a new one on me with the AW4. I feel like the fact that it works fine with manual shifting should tell you a lot, but I don't know transmissions that well. When you say it works with manual shifting, you mean if it's happening in D and she shifts down to 1-2 that it just goes fine?

The experience I DO have with AW4s makes me want to tell you to clean the NSS because that's the one known problem these always seem to have. I really don't think that the TCU is using the NSS for anything related to this (might it think you're in N versus D though?) but it's an easy "can't hurt" too.

Please update this to let us know what you find (as the owner of three 2001 auto XJs.)

This is worth a read.

Oh boy. Hopefully I dont have to replace it. But thanks for the insight.

Solid advice. I do have a dealership here with a good reputation that I can reach out to. Not used to thinking that route being a AMC guy

Again thank you. Working some heavy hours right now but Ill give it a look sometime tomorrow

Yeah she brought it over to my place and when we pulled out it was fine. Stopped at a stop sign and it gave me the reaction I explained. It gives that reaction in drive. I shifted down to 1 then 2 and back into drive and it ran flawlessly.

Not suprised you brought up the NSS cause thats where I was headed due to an intermittent starting issue as well. Ill update as soon as I can but itll probably be a bit before shell give me it again to diagnose.

APPRECIATE THE REPLIES EVERYONE!

THANK YOU ALL

FWIW, the speed sensor in my Postal (97 XJ setup) wasn’t hooked up at all for years and it ran/shifted fine. Saw mention of that in the thread Rob posted.

Edit: Wonder if it would be possible for the speed sensor to go bad in some way while hooked up that would cause this though? Maybe unplug it entirely and see what you get?

Possibly. I know less about this transmission than just about everyone. Getting the Jeep back from her now will be another thing now that she knows she can just shift through the gears.

She could unplug it pretty easily with a little direction, it's simple to reach. Just watch that the plug doesn't end up near the exhaust (may not be possible in an actual XJ, but it's close on my Postal.)

I had a very similar problem in a 1997 xj there are three solenoids in the trans. I believe there sold as a set once you drop the trans pan its easy to swap them out. New filter, gasket, fluid your all set.The jeep has 240,000 something miles and is working well!!

So it would shift fine with the shifter with bad solenoids? They bypass the solenoids? Genuine question.

Yes manually shifting the trans was fine. The problem I had was always after coming to a stop and then try to go again it would stutter and feel like it was slipping?
