Randyzzz Scrambler Restification Thread!

Ugh...if timing is good the cage finally goes in for powdercoat on Saturday. I talked with the powdercoater, and he advised against using the high-temp filler along the gusset seams like I had planned. So, I've been spending the last several nights welding in filler and grinding it smooth. I know you're not supposed to grind your welds, but this is excess filler added after the fact that I am grinding. What a pain. While the cage is off getting pretty, I'm going to finish the tub soundproofing and re-coating the liner. Then I need to polish some wheels....I'll be glad when I'm through with this stage of the build. Can't wait to get started on my bumpers, and tire carrier. I'm going to base the rear carrier off the Off Road Evolution carrier.

I'll post up powdercoat pictures when it comes back!

Well, I dropped the cage off at the powder coater. He and the other guys there liked the design and were wondering if I wanted to build more... Maybe after the Scrambler is done, we'll see.

Anyways- I found my "color". After looking at many silvers only to realize the shiny ones went on too thin and the more durable ones didn't have that "Pop", a color caught my eye. It's called copper vein- predominantly black with a copper metallic raised spatter type texture. Imagine Hammerite with extreme contrast. It goes great with my paint, and the coater said it was a great choice for durability and coverage. They use it on handrails at amusement parks! He is going to do a high gloss clear over it, with UV protection. He stated they have done several high-end street rod frames and several bumpers with the silver version, and the customers have been extremely pleased. I think the copper will tie in nicely with my paint and dash. My wife says I need black or brown seats now...I told her reclining Mastercrafts would be perfect...

This is what it looks like up close...

The cage will be done by this Thursday, I'll post up pics when I get it.

That looks sweet... makes me feel like I really cheaped out with the poorly applied rattle can tractor paint

Eric, I figured powder coat was actually saving me $$$$. By the time I sand, prime with self etching primer, and paint the 100' of tubing, I would probably have spent at least $120.00 plus a few days. And I would still have paint that chipped easily and would probably wear off quickly with the bikini top. $250.00 is cheap in the long run.

After a night and day of thought, I got worried that the copper vein might not end up being the right shade of copper, and look like a badly antiqued stair railing. So, I'm going with the silver vein, it will tie in the gray seats and aluminum wheels better. The cage gets blasted Monday, so I have time to let him know.

Either accent color would be cool Randy!

After the cage is done, then your bumpers done the same way will tie it all together nicely! :smokin:

I went with the silver. The coater likes the silver the best too.

I'll get it back Weds or Thurs.

:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead: My wife saw a gorgeous blue paint sample while we were at the shop on Saturday, and is trying to convince me go to blue paint from the current copper color! What to do.... (I really liked the blue too...)

Need pics of the blue.

I'm a big fan of most blues, so I think I'll know what my advice would be

You're intending to take it down to metal to paint, right?

Not down to metal, my current paint is solid but weathered. It should take primer/sealer well. I'm still partial to the copper...I guess I'll have to see the cage first. (Thursday!:D)

Here's the best blue example I could find so far...not quite the same color, the one she likes has more pearl.

Blue paint and 22's?
Well you would be adding on to your collection of rims!
LOL.

I wouldn't paint a different color over your stock paint, if it were me.

Randy
I'm sure your coater told you this but the outfit I have used always does clear over the silver vein for UV protection, I have used it on several things, (alum camera case, dash on my cj 5, etc) and it does look good!! Might double check with them and see what they think.....

No 22" rims for me...still not sold on the blue either...but it does look nice.

There's going to be a coat of primer/sealer under whatever the final color coat is, so I'm not worried.

The powdercoater is clear coating it with some "bulletpoof" stuff. He said it should last forever.:D

Pics tomorrow, I'm picking it up at noon!

Powdercoat pics!

(PM returned :))

Got the cage from the powdercoater. WOW! It looks great! They did a great job, and I think I made the right color choice. It looks good with the copper body color, I think.

In case anyone's interested, Brian at Armordillo Powder Coating in Bend did the job. The powder is Forrest "Silver Vein" with Tiger gloss clear topcoat. If you're interested, PM me and I'll get you his number.

Here's a bunch of pics.
