Randyzzz Scrambler Restification Thread!

I hate it when we get old enough to start thinking sensible. Did you ever think that we would both even think about selling our Copper 8's and both be building new Red ones. Well they are not sold yet. LOL
 
Sounds like an excellent well reasoned justification. Jim and I were just talking about this. My learned wisdom is that you have to own the things, not let them own you.


 
Wow...been a long time since I've even looked at this thread. However, I made a bit more progress so I figured a post was needed. I don't know if I had mentioned this, but when I got Copper driveable 36,000 miles ago I had not built a front driveshaft. Funny thing, with the rear locker and the suspension/tires/horsepower- I haven't needed one...until Snowpocalypse this winter. I priced a yoke and shaft, but got to thinking- I've got a bunch of parts I've collected, maybe there's something usable. I found a front CV shaft that was almost new, and a rear CV yoke off a 205 case. A little machining on the yoke, 1 1/2" removed from the shaft, and I've got 4WD! With the front locker this thing now officially has "Beast Mode". We've gotten over 4 feet of snow over the past couple months, plus some rain. It's now 18" of heavy, dense muck in my yard. Copper blew through it- 4 roosts of ice and engine revving. My wife came home, saw the tracks through the front yard, shook her head and commented "Looks like you finally got your 4WD working". Yes, I did!:woohoo::headbang::bacon:

A little tech tip on making a 205 yoke work on a Rubicon 241J transfer case. You have to machine out the splines on the back of the yoke so it will fully seat. None of the local machine shops wanted to touch it, so i got creative. A hole saw, drill press, and some Dremel clean up saved me $125 for a new yoke.

Well I did sell my Copper Scrambler right before Christmas. I still drive Stump Jumper daily.
 
Excellent! It's amazing how nice "creative" machine work can turn out, when you take your time.... :thumbsup:

You have no idea how shocked I was when you showed me your Scrambler, and mentioned, "this thing doesn't even have 4 wheel drive!" :huh:

Yeah, I got a lot of grief for running without a front shaft for so long. Mostly friendly ribbing from the wife...

I started to build Stump Jumper to be a 2WD but figured I would be Kicked off the island. :)

I think more than a few of us think this way for a street only Jeep. I have been pondering this for my CJ5 since I just want it to be a fast crazy street Jeep. Pulling the T-case out and gutting the front axle will allow me to use a nice muncie 4 speed and shave some useless weight.

Couldn't you just swap in the beam axle from a DJ?


 
I like the tail lights too. Did you like the savvy lights? I was thinking about adding them. Plug and play? Did you need to add the anti-flicker thing for the blinkers?

Thanks- The military lights are a "love 'em or hate 'em" kind of thing. They sure are bright!

Dain- I absolutely love the Savvy lights. And their customer service is awesome. They replaced a lens unit well over a year after I bought them- It started dying intermittently. When I removed it I saw it was cracked. I emailed Savvy about buying a new one and they just said mail the old one in and they'd send me a new one for no charge. Can't beat that. I took them off to put on the Military lights, but I saved them to go on Red. I didn't have any flickering issues, but then again nothing is stock on my Scrambler, not even the harness. 140 amp GM alternator and electronic flashers...
 
Randy, I just saw where this thread had 995 replies and my thread had 996 well this one gives you 997.
