Well, just as I left Virginia and headed into West Virginia last night the skies opened up. Nothing like being on the highway in the dark with torrential lightning rain on winding mountain roads. To make matters worse, I broke off the riddle old key in the ignition getting out to lock it up . So now I have to figure out how to fix that as well. Also saw that the power steering pump has a nice leak. Glad I'm telling it and not driving it. But all things considered, who cares? There are a couple of guys standing around in this morning in the rain.

He's driving or sleeping. Posting and driving at the same time is dangerous. That's a precious load. Cut him some slack !! [emoji43]

Thanks for the update and new pics. Hope the rest of the trip is/was uneventful.

Looking forward to hearing the rest of the backstory on this one.

Overlander looks great!

Ok, so just got home... Steering column is locked, key broken off in ignition. I tried shoving the rest of the key in there to try to get it to turn, no dice. So no starting, no steering. I need to get it off the trailer so I can return it and have through tomorrow. Suggestions? Can I get to the ignition easily? (Wish I had a new one to swap in ... Ugh. ) I don't have a wheel puller for the steering either.

Thought about locksmith to try and get key out, but that won't help much as I don't have a spare...

I used a thin long nose pliers one time but you pushed it in so that wont work now. Your going to have to pull the wheel . Go to auto body store they have those cheep pullers . If the wheel was pulled before it might just come off with wiggling it up..

It's a short trailer, can you roll it off. If automatic you'll have to disconnect driveshaft.

If you can see the end will a pair of tweezers (fine tip for spliners) work. If loose maybe you an work it out enough to grab with a paper clip (paper clip to work out, fingers can'take keep up with head:wave:

Column would still be locked. No spare key included.

Didn't catch the no spare key. If you can get the piece out I imagine a good lock smith could make a new key. At this point I'd roll her off the trailer into a parking space then play. I even tried a magnet on my keys to see if a magnet could help. No dice.

I think I have this first issue solved. AutoZone will loan you steering wheel puller's for nothing, and they said they be able to get me a new ignition cylinder and key by tomorrow morning. So I should be able to pull the wheel pull the old ignition put a new one and reinstall everything and hopefully that'll take care of it. The adventures of Jeeping begin. Again.

Yep good old autozone.. your going to have to compress the lock plate. Out is easy in isnt so much.. lock ring pliers also

I'm trying to remember from when I replaced my ignition switch, doesn't it need to be unlocked to remove from the column?

I think autozone has the free rental on the spring plate compressor that Brooklyn mentioned. You'll need both, that and the steering wheel puller. We will then talk you through it. Once you get in there and get the column unlocked, you can push on the rod that activates the switch at top of the column down low. I have a few yard jeeps around here with vise grips sticking to that rod. Just push and go.

Also make sure AZ gets the 84 and down ignition key. You are right at the edge of production between the two. 85-86 is dif.

Ok. This was first sold in 1985, but I checked the VIN and it is indeed an 84. So that's settled... I need another tool, huh? The cylinder is easy to get out of tj's... Just my luck. Thanks for all the input and offers of help.

I would go by look. Not by VIN. Here is the two: Technically both will work but one has a different end to it and uses one less screw IIRC. Top is through 84 model year typically. Bottom is 85 and up. Although this all won't matter initially cause you'll be able to start it with just a push of the rod once all of it is outta the way and the col is unlocked.

I was in Virginia for about 50 minutes as I drove up 77 from North Carolina to West Virginia. This was a quick turnaround trip. Down and back 12 hours. Well, it was supposed to be anyway.
