SJScrambler - Getting Started

So, the locker came in and the wheel bearings as well... pressed on the bearings, installed the locker, locktited the ring gear and finally blew out the case with brake cleaner and compressed air... followed up with a little 8090 to make sure the pinion didn't have any left over junk in it... test fit along the way and now tonight I will put it all together and then get it under the truck.

Got a few sporadic hours in, but the old axle is out and the locked 3.54 W/T is swapped in... AFTER... I cleaned up the truck, got all the parts out of the bed, took the bed off, put it up on jackstands, cleaned up the garage and surround spaces and got the 4 front body mounts in place and hung a fender and laid the hood on... it was a ton of work, but a lot better working conditions. All went well until this morning when I noticed a drip on the floor from the rear end... apparently the new lube locker gasket, or the new diff cover is not sealed all the way.

Got the rear all apart and looked at the new diff cover... had what I thought was powder coat, but more like a hammerite and it wasn't even.
I cleaned it all up, ground down to bare metal (not sure if that was what I was supposed to do or not), but now I have a mating surface.
Gonna use cork and RTV, tried and true... will put it back together tonight and mount the gas tank correctly.

12 Grade 8 bolts, lock washers, RTV, cork gasket... all set to try it out again... but... the filler is stripped out... lovely.
I will have to weld a nut to it when I do the new mounts on the frame and break the welder out... so that is on hold.
I was able to get some of the front mounted up.
I am measuing to make sure it is all square and where it needs to be.
A lot of fitting and finessing.

The cover is new, but the filler for the AMC 20 is the hex one on the front side of the axle housing... someone stripped the hell out of it.
I forgot to snap a picture, but I can't get vice grips on it, can't even really get at it with a chisel.
I tried quickly to heat it up and tried to pound in the socket with a hammer, but even a little force spins it inside the hole.
I just didn't notice it when I had the axle out and was putting in the locker or I would have gotten it out then... and it would have been a ton easier.

I was having a beer and looing at the Jeep last night... I am thinking overall the stance is great and fills the wheel wells nicely with the 33x12.5x15s... but 35's might be decent as well.
This frame has a 1" lift built into it with the 2x4 construction... and using 1" Daystart BL pucks, so that with the 2.5 BDS gives 4.5" and anoterh 3/4" on the shackles... so I might have to mock them up... not sure.

I got to get it mounted on the front mount of the radiator, and then the front 2 mounts of the cab so it is all square and nice, then tighten it all down and make sure it is all level so I can mock in the rear most mounts of the cab.
They are currently there, but need to be moved forward with cutting and stretching the frame.

Geez, I didn't even think that through, I saw the photo of the cover and read it as a stripped drain hole in the cover since it was a replacement HD cover. :crazy: Needed more coffee before posting.

I think this is one of the rare situations where I think a smaller tire is going to look better. I really love the look of those 33s and you don't have much weight on it yet. The comparisons for me, visually, are the TJ Brutes and Scherb's pickup. I always like the Brutes better with "just enough" tire. While the more lifted ones with larger tires look good too, I think the smaller tires fit the proportions better. With Scherb's truck, he went with the "what would Jeep have built" kind of approach and that always struck a chord with me. I picture yours a lot like that and the 33s are really working for me.

Oh, I am with you... and those tires are in decent shape and will probably be the ones I use while I am breaking it in... it is just beer and looking at the other Jeep with 35's and then the mind gets rolling.
Heck, I see a 401 for sale about 2 hours south of me and I am running the numbers in my head... originally this was going to be a 6 cyl, then got 304 and started buying parts for it, now a 401? again... the 304 is plenty and all original AMC... I need to build it and stop dreaming!

Seems everyone automatically thinks33's, 35's or bigger. I like the smaller tires and better ride on the highway myself. To me how much lift decides what size tire. Done properly they al look great.
This picture shows 2 1/2 inch lift with 31 inch tires. It's the sleeper look I wanted.

It will be 20 inches longer and I always think when I see long trucks with small tires they don't look proportional.
I will reserve judgement until I get all the sheetmetal on there and put flares on and build the bed... but I think 33's will be it.

Got the shop cleaned up, turned around, mounted up and now everything is fitting a lot better.
I got it up on jack stands and got the drag link and tie rod unhooked before I ran out of time.
I plan on getting the axle out tonight and swapping it for the 3.54 one I have all set to go.

Once this is done, rear mounts next up to get them in the right place for the cab.
After that, it goes on hold for a bit as I tear down the 83 CJ7 and go pick up another Scrambler :)

It isn't a done deal and it is quite a bit away and the weather this weekend is iffy... if it all works out and the starts align, you guys will be the first to know... but don't get too excited, it is a pile.

So, got the front axle out last night after a massive amount of snow/ice cleanup... been cold, then warm, then cold, so a lot more ice this year than last year.
Snow is nice, but ice is no picnic.
Fell on my butt and that is definitely no fun... next day pains are a thing of misery.

Anyway, have to swap some parts and then the front will be back in.

Picked up the Scrambler over the weekend... weather was horrible driving, but she is home same and sound...
