Speedhut gauge install, wiring update/fix, switchplate

I wonder if you upgraded the stock lights to LED like DirtyB if the dash lights would be bright enough to work together with the stock dimmer???

https://www.cj-8.com/forum/showthread.php?42848-Speedometer-Light-Bulbs

That's irrelevant, all the lights he replaced are eliminated with the Speedhut gauges. He's talking about the stock speedometer illumination that goes away with the SH speedo.

I'm talking about the lights in the switch labels. Years ago I opened all of them up and replaced the incandescent bulbs with new ones that made them much brighter (didn't want to lose the stock labels, the replacements I've seen weren't to my liking and I'd heard reports of them coming apart) there's a thread on here somewhere, but it was probably 8-10 years ago.

To be clear, the SH gauges DO dim with the stock dimmer the way I did it, I just have separate control of their brightness relative to the rest of the dash lights. If I didn't use the stock dimmer feed to the SH dimmer, they'd be completely separate. Now I can set the SH brightness based on the stock lights and just use the stock dimmer for gross adjustment. I don't have to mess with the SH one until I want to change them relative to one another.

When I replaced the label lights, LEDs weren't what they are now and maybe you could do the same with LED bulbs now, but I'm nowhere near that anal and it was simple enough to just mount the SH dimmer. It also made things balanced because I decided to mount the clock adjustment button in the dash face rather than try to bury it behind the dash. That's already paid off in ease of adjustment the couple of times I disconnected the battery since the install. It's just holes and now I can adjust however I like.

With a stock, Duraspark ignition, what should I connect the Speedhut tach signal wire to??

On the keyed ignition power, you just need to find a good hot start/run wire. I don't remember the specs but I don't think these gages pull very much power at all. Worth checking to be sure.

BW,
Thanks for all the electrical help. Excuse my ignorance on this subject but what under the dash would be a good hot start/run wire to tap?

Again thanks so much!

As far as a function/circuit to tap, the "Coil" circuit looks like the only one that's "hot start/run", everything else is "hot on/run."

Thanks Big W!!!!

Thanks to Big W, I have gotten my SpeedHut gauges installed for the most part. The inverter for the backlighting was bad so they are sending me another one. Only thing else I need to do is drop the fuel tank and put the new sender in!!

So with the GPS speedo, what does one do with the speedometer cable? Should I remove it completely, or just let is spin behind the dash??

I will remove mine. One less thing to "clutter up" the engine bay and behind the dash. I remove the drive cable and cut the housing about an inch out from coupler and install silicone to seal it.
