The '83 - Family Man

not a dumb question at all. You can run it in a couple variations but it seems to me when I've done that (motor in free spool mode, brake assembly off) I still have binding issues but they are noticeably different. My next step is to pull guts out and check clearances hopefully later today.

My only other dumb thought is if you replaced a bolt somewhere that’s longer than stock and dragging on something.

An over-long bolt could grind, good idea to check. Also, it is possible to install the brake drive gear (inside the case) in the wrong orientation (the 'high' side of the gear should face the brake), which may also cause clearance issues. I almost installed mine incorrectly last night. In fact, I was so set on making sure the brake cluster and the drive gear was correct when I seated the bushing to the proper depth that I completely forgot to install the locking plate. :banghead: Bone head moment.

Luckily, I was able to carefully pry the brake cluster back out with out damaging the seal or roller bearing and then reinstall with the plate in place. Whew.

Other than that, I have read that some grinding may occur when the motor starts to fail.

Good news! Sometimes you’ve gotta be glad that a stupid mistake on your part was the best finding.

when I installed the new bearing in the upper case (where the motor shaft installs) I had it at a slight angle. I didn’t drive it in straight. Crazy thing is that the motor shaft did go in but of course at a slight angle. This caused the armature to contact the magnets causing the bind which stopped the winch.

fortunately I didn’t run it long enough to cause any damage. I installed a new bearing CORRECTLY this time and she runs beautifully.

I’ll take It. ☺️

had some down time so was able to do some work this week. swapped the tires around so the white letters would show and started assembly. I've added a pic of the original VIN tag that I kept Mist Silver. Wanted to show the difference between it and the new RAM Truck silver I used.

More progress. Man I love the Speedhut gauges. Also happy to start breaking up the silver some. Love the color but it’s a lot. I think the black flares, blue decal package, and rocker moldings will look great on this and help tone down the silver.

Getting so close! Hope to drive it home from my shop Friday.
Need to install the Scrambler decals on the hood (awaiting Jeep decals should be here by Friday)
Final torque on all suspension parts now that it’s on its own weight
Final electrical test, check all fluids then fire her up!
