Title question

Hello. Longtime member, first time posting. I am looking a basket case 8 and have a question about the title. Under Model it is blank. The vin # does show the 6th and 7th digits as "88", which from looking online indicates a CJ8. Vin plate does match the title. Can any members let me know if their title shows CJ or CJ8 or anything else under "Model" or is it blank. Just want to make sure this is the correct title and not swapped for another jeep at some point.

Thank you for you help,
Jason

This might be a question for the DMV. I've bought a bunch of CJ's and in my experience, if the VIN doesn't match the title, the red flag goes up. I'm sure you know that the rivets holding the plate are easily removed and replaced so anything can happen. Be careful.

Just another note on your situation. These vehicles are old enough that they normally have gone through engine changes which means the "numbers matching" doesn't apply. Also, unlike newer vehicles, these don't have multiple ID numbers plastered all over the body and chassis.

I just looked through some old DMV documents. Whether it was Washington, California, Arizona, Nevada, or Oklahoma, all of the titles were printed "Scrambler" and not CJ-8. All of the others were printed CJ-5 or CJ-7.

Ok, thank you! This title is blank under model, which seems strange. The "Make" shows JEP rather than JEEP, which also seems odd.

I think it depends on the state, but a CJ8 in NH says the following MAKE:"Jeep", MODEL:"Scramble" and BDYSTL:"Util" or "APRP" for the bodystyle

This thread gives some insight on places to check to see if the vehicle was all one at sometime.
Sorry, no help on the title info.

In Texas the model could be a bunch of different things. After all, these forms are completed by bureaucrats and not always caring about 100% accuracy.

I think one of mine lists model as UTV.

Heck, my inboard ski boat lists it as an outboard on the registration for TPWD.

If the title VIN matches the VIN on the vehicle, and the VIN plate on the vehicle is secured with rivits that have scalloped heads, and the backing plate the VIN is attached to is rivited to the windshield with the same scalloped rivits, you should be safe to assume it has not been monkeyed with. But, like all things in life, there could be some odd outlier situation.

Model: blank
Body style: Sta-Wagon

Same exact thing for my 77 Cherokee S title, interestingly

Thanks Bigwalton! Unfortunately, while doing some research I missed out on this particular scrambler. I think I will post a want ad. Maybe somewhere here can help. Just being overly since I had a major issue with another vehicle at DMV a few years back.
Thanks again everyone.

Jumping in late, but on my 84 Scrambler, it said American Motors Scrambler. On my 81, it says Jeep Jeep. So model and manufacturer were the same. So VA is inconsistent

Thanks for the reply! Seems like every state has some weird inconsistencies when it comes to titles. Thanks for the reply!

My 81 has a Florida title and it does not have a "Model" section on it. Once I get the Nevada title for it, I will see if it has anything for model. However, the manufacturer on the Florida title says American Motors. If my old ass can remember, I'll look at the title for the 84 and see what it says. That one is a PA title, so who knows.
