Coming along nicely. How's it drive now?

I terms of steering, it's perfect. Real tight. No more CJ-play up front. The rear springs are stiff! That add-a-leaf without any weight back their provides WAY TOO much. I can't even get it to bounce when I jump on the bumper. I'm going to let it settle with all the goodies and see from there. The front is getting an 8274 and the new bumper so that should provide the right amount of weight. All in all...it's all good! Bumpers go on at Dustin's tomorrow night!

I'm going 4.10 ARBs front and rear. They're being installed on the 12th. (East Coast Gear Supply in Raleigh). They can do it in a day. So that little cash-ectomy will be very nice....

Cheers,
Dylan

GPFAB Bumpers and Tuffy Console Install

Great night! Took the bumpers over to Dustin's sweet heated garage. Of course, he ends up doing 90% of the work. It's not intentional, it's just a combination of 1) He can't help himself, 2) he's REALLY fast, 3) he's a remarkably nice guy, and 4) somebody has to take pictures!

Pulled off the old front and rears. Cleaned the frame up...painted it all up with some Rustoleum satin (and OBTW - you need to paint a PSC steering box BEFORE install as the clearcoat is not sufficient. Flash rusted in 2 days. Probably should have known better!!).

First off, these bumpers are simply amazing. The tolerances are perfect. Not close. PERFECT. It's real engineered quality stuff - not just fabricated. Can't say enough good things about his stuff. They came with all the Grade 8 hardware for install.

Mounted up the front without the winch plate. A new GPFAB 8274 plate is on order (and so is the WINCH!!)

Rear went on easy enough. I asked Eddie to fab the rear with longer the side extensions for a Scrambler. They fit VERY tight up against and under the tub. You can just slide a dollar bill between the bumper and the body. I don't know if it'll be a problem, but I think it's a great way of protecting the tub from ***-dragging.

The rotopax mount and HiLift jack mount are ready to mount...just didn't get to it (and I need to actually buy the rotopax!) The location of these mounts will determine the distance of the spare from the Jeep. Easy to adjust.

Tuffy Center Console is very nice....enjoyed resting my arm there on the way home!

NEXT UP:
Regear 4.10 w/ARBs front and rear
New Exhaust (it has this teeny little pipe on it and no cat?) No idea why - but I guarantee California's gonna want one!
Full Cage
Third Row Seats
Warn 8274

Oh my....!

Cheers,
Dylan

Had to do it!....

The more distant target looming over this project is our move to San Diego. Trailering the Scrambler across county (with a wheeling trip in Colorado along the way) has been in the plans all along. Fell into a sweet deal today and couldn't resist. I love old guys with lots of toys and money. They make the best CL sellers!!

It has a 7-prong plug for lights and brakes, so I was without on the way home - luckily GPS took me down almost all dark country roads and the one State Patrol on the Interstate passed me without saying a thing....it must have helped that I zip tied my LED headlight to the rear-center of the trailer and flipped on the red lens!

The 2500 Suburban (7.4L) likes it! Ready for Wednesday's trailer ride to NC for gears/lockers!!

Man that is a great trailer!!! I need to upgrade to something like that soon

That's the same rear bumper / swingout I have had my eye on. Looks great.

Awesome trailer. I need one of those, and something that can tow it...

Is your move to San Diego permanent?

After a bunch of hand wringing...I just ordered a Bestop Supertop from Quadratec. No doors, just the top. I looked at the BD-Co tops, but they are twice the price and I just can't swing it without biting into other project money (gears/lockers/cage, et).

The original plan was no top, just a bikini over the cage. Probably perfectly acceptable in SoCal, but between now and July, there's just not a good way to use/drive/tow/store the Scrambler without a top on it.

I considered a full hard top, but that's just a lot to move and store. That, and since Rally Top is in L.A., I can save about $500 in shipping if I just drove up there from San Diego.

I'm already planning to add a third bow to the Bestop frame by using part of a CJ7 bow to take up some of the slack. I'll do it at install to avoid too much hassle.

Headed to NC for gears/lockers on Monday. Weather delayed the trip (was supposed to be last Tuesday). Very exciting!!

Cheers,
Dylan

That thing is looking AWESOME!!! Love the stance! I think the 33x10.5, look sooo much better than the 33x12.5's do. C'mon, give us some more pics.

All trailered-up...no place to go?

Well....they say that life is what happens while you're making other plans. Seriously doubting the trip to NC on Monday - I think the baby has other plans!! We'll see how Mama does tonight....

I had a brake controller and 7/4 pin connector installed on Wednesday by a local trailer shop. Seems to work well. It's a proportional controller so it should do the trick. They did a great job on the install - very neat and clean under the hood (power/breaker) and the wiring in the rear looks very nice.

Drug the trailer out from the side of the house (snowed in), shoveled it off, and got the Scrambler up on the trailer today. Bolted a couple of HD D-rings onto the trailer with some grade-8 hardware. (BTW - I LOVE that Tractor Supply sells Grade-8 by the pound! I paid $4.29 for 14 bolts, 28 washers, 14 lock washers, and 14 nuts. Would have been a small fortune at Lowes!)

I drilled and mounted the D-Rings inside of the square boxes on the side of the trailer - my idea. I can swap them outboard easy enough if need be. Anything objectionable about this set-up? I couldn't figure out a better way to use D-rings and I figured inside the box was just a strong/effective as on the outside. Opinions?

Picked up some axle straps at the local Tractor Supply. Looks like I'll need a couple more D-rings and a means of hooking up the 6' of 3/8" HD (70) safety chain. Final tie-down plan is an "X" pattern front with 2x 5000lb ratchet straps (military grade straps) front and rear with a safety chain up front (and maybe one in back too).

A little annoyed with a few of things on the BDS lift. The rear with the recommended add-a-leaf is still so stiff that the shackles aren't even pointing the right way. I've driven it quite a bit and even bounced it around real good in the snow. No change. They may change as the build continues (cage/seats) and they soften - BUT - the passenger shackle is at a more severe angle than the driver side. I've loosened the bolts...no change. Thoughts?

Also the front passenger spring seems to be bent - or something else is out of whack. The spring is flush on the perch. The shackle is cranked in at a weird angle. I've emailed BDS about replacing that spring - it really does seem to be bent. Also emailed M.O.R.E to check if they sent me the right shackles (I ordered them over the phone after talking with them). The center pin is 2.5" up front and they are (theoretically 2" CJ springs). Of course, the rear 2.5" springs have a 3" center pin - so that makes me wonder if the shackles are correct and it's the spring. Thoughts?

Lastly, with the rear so high - I'm getting driveshaft wobble at 48-49mph. New u-joints - it's still there. I'd REALLY rather not drop the TC and if the springs came down the pinion angle on the Dana 44 would increase and I think it'd be solved. That said, if I pull the add-a-leaf, I can also re-shim that axle to get the pinion angle I need. So much for bolt-on and go, eh?

Oh, and I had a catalytic converter put on the existing exhaust...much, much, much quieter! I like it! The exhaust is actually 2" pipe and almost brand new...I guess it just seemed small to me after the 3" I had on my V8 CJ7.

And while, I'm here...anyone know why my 258 MOPAR MPFI insists on idling at 1000rpms and 1200rpms unless you're at a full stop? Is this normal? Adjustable?

So anyway...she'll be ready to trailer down to NC for gears/lockers unless there's a baby. Not complaining, but that'll put a MAJOR hold on this little project! Very exciting!

Cheers,
Dylan

Is this baby expected to fall from the sky or had you been expecting it for a while? ;-)

No seriously...she's not due until March...but I don't think she'll make it til then....

Dylan , I don't have a lot of experience with efi, but my 91 4.0 idled high as you you coming to a stop , but then dropped to normal as soon as you came too a stop

I was told that it was correct !

It looks like the wrong shackles, bushings or spring hangers...or some combination. Were the front spring hangers changed to 2.5" wide, like the rear ones? They should be 2".
