I have a chance to get an older model of one of these for a decent price. Have no experience with warn winches and have never seen this model before. Anybody on here use or heard of how these operate?

These are great winches and have stood the test of time for many many many years.

Great winch. Don't go too old- some people think the old Warn/Bellvue is an 8274- but it's cable controlled and has no power out. It has a band type brake on the side, instead of the toothed drum.

thats an awesome write up, i'm gonna go take a look at it saturday and see what kind of shape its in, hopefully its not too beat up.

Buy it and rebuild it. I have one that worked as the main winch line on a home made waterwell pump pulling rig for 8 years then I got it when they bought a real factory made pulling rig.

Jake White has just redone his and will post a "how to" soon. Am going to review those other two links as well.

Stout winch. Everybody likes to compare how good they to the 8274.

It is a little heavy. Nylon cable will help that.

Went and looked at the winch today, not in too bad of shape. It has some surfuce rust on the spool and the cable is completely rusted, but will work for the time being. Just have to clean it up a bit get all the cobwebs out of it, and buy a amsteel rope for it and we should be in business. Not bad for 225 and two cb radios included. Will post pics as soon as i figure out how to and i can get to a computer to do it on.

Good price on it.
I have probably that much in mine after restoring it (not including purchase price as it came on my old Scrambler when we bought it)

I plan on doing a writeup of my own of my restoration of it.
I'm a bit backed up on work right now - both for the SOA and my local club but will get to that writup as soon as I can.

Feel free to PM me and I'll be happy to field any questions you have about it. I'm pretty well versed on it at the moment having just finished the resto of mine.

$225.....Thats not a good price at all

THATS A GREAT PRICE!!!!!!!

Thats less than half of what they normally sell for in 'well used' condition. (~$500)

this is probably the single best medium duty (under 10k rating) winch you can buy.
As was said, it has withstood the test of time.
the big advantage is the drum does not get hot like the newer inline winches due to the drum not having the brake inside. Thats good for your new winch rope, it dont like heat.

check the serial numbers and find out what motor your has, you may want to upgrade it to the newer, more powerfull motor. But its not nesessary.

Congrats on the find

yeah, but will he SHIP it? LOL.
