New World Cabs?

Here's the "Llanero" roof. This one rises to 9" high, which makes it 4" higher than the "low" roof I first posted, and 5" higher than the stock LJ hardtop.

Oh and one more photo, comparing the high Llanero roof to a stock TJ hardtop (which BTW is 1/2" lower at its peak than an LJ hardtop.)

OK everyone, have at it, give me your comments on all of them, what do you like best, what do you hate, what should I change...

On all the cabs. How about making the glass the same height of the door glass? Just extending the bottom a little would make that happen. I think that would give a better flow to the sides. I do like the top with the step up.

For me, on the tall roofs the corners in the rear just don't fit with any of the other lines on the Jeep. I think that's my big issue.

The World Cabs have that rear portion angled down a bit and that keeps the rear curves more reasonable, I chopped this one and it really helps make it work for me.

Thanks, I could make the glass a little taller so it matched the windows better.

mo glass mo betta....
Jeff, personally I like the higher roof-line idea, but I did not see any of the alpine windows that LR uses in their tops. Once awhile back you mentioned them and I think it would look friggin stellar. Thoughts?

No plans at this point to do alpine windows. I don't want to be forced to use the radius of the Land Rover windows, and I don't have another source for curved glass, so they're out.

For a comparison with the stock top, here's the model and the full scale LJ...

No more comments from anyone on what you like or don't like about the tops and the different roof versions?

Awesome comparison shot Jeff, you never cease to amaze with the ways you show these things...

Are you out looking for rubicon wheels to add to the model to make it all proper? ;)

It's actually a tough shot to get right, the camera was about 18" from the model, and the full size Jeep was about 75 feet away. Very hard to get enough depth of field to make them both look right, so I had to sharpen the real LJ a bit with software.

1:18 Rubi's are available at 4WD.com, only 24.99, but I think I can accomplish what I need without making the additional investment. :)

On the topic of models, this morning I remembered I have a Revell 1:16 CJ-7 model in the attic somewhere, I bought it years ago and never built it. Maybe I should lengthen that into a Scrambler, then build a Safari Cab model for it...

Or you could wait until my 1/24 Scramblers are ready & build your Safari Cab to it :D

Nice work as usual Jeff! I think I like the "Llanero" roof version best.

Oh no, I wouldn't degrade your masterpiece with my amateur modeling.

One vote for the Llanero. :)

In post number 222 with the 3 side views, it's a toss up between the 1st (standard height) and the second (stepped tall). I like the second for the uniqueness, but would probably stick with the first for usefullness in my situation. Again, end use probably dictates which top you find more attractive. The higher tops would surely appeal more to those who really used the back seats, or to those who needed extra room for camping/expedition usage.

I agree with wanting to see a taller side window, same height as the door window. I almost think the shorter side windows give it an out of proportion look like the older CJ5 hardtops. I like the height of the windows in the Willys style top you drew up a while back. (That's still my all time favorite.)

Randy,
Thanks, I'll do some taller windows tomorrow morning and post new photos.

One suggestion I've gotten a few times in the jeepforum thread is to make it possible to run with the side panels removed. For structural reasons I don't think this is a good idea, but I had the side panels off this morning making the larger windows that have been suggested, so I thought I'd to a few photos...

Randy, DC CJ8,

Here's the taller windows you suggested, I think they look a lot better. Thanks for the suggestion.

Now I've got to retake the taller roof photos with these windows...
