Gary's '81 Scrambler

Taking out a new CLEAN trans and transfer case is way better than the old oil soaked units at least.

I've had to redo stuff that I was sure was fixed on my CJ8 alot after the rebuild. I just put my tub back on the frame and starting to tackle the breaks now. I'm having a tuff time finding the rear break line with the block the bolts to the axle right now. Do you have a good source?

Congrats on the brakes

Suck, sorry to hear that on the throwout bearing. Sounds just like something I would do!

CChambers,
I can't help on that brake line you are searching for...mine was included with my RE lift kit.

But if I had to try somewhere? I'd call Inline Tube. I'd bet they have it.

Test Drive!

Finally went for my first test drive around the neighborhood last night! Couldn't get above 5 mph since my alignment isn't set, but man it was fun! I've still got the following things to do, but I am close:
-Insurance (found it for $300 per year, with $40,000 coverage, and limit of 3,000 miles yr)
-Inspection
-Alignment
-Terminate taillight connections
-Fabricate spare tire holder / high lift jack holder for bed
-Install seat belts / shoulder belts
-Paint half top
-Install everything into my (hard) door shells
-DRIVE TO LOCAL FALL CAR SHOWS! It will be a blast showing up at these events and trying to represent the Jeep crowd (in the sea of old Camaro's, Mustangs, etc)!

Here it is currently. Comments welcomed (sorry about the fuzzy iPhone pic)!

Looking good:cheers:

I have taken my green Scrambler to a few car shows around here, but no one shows any interest in it:shrug: Better luck to you:thumbsup:

Seatbelts

Looking good...U know I like.

What shade of Red is that?

See what looks to be captured nut in roll bar.... are U going with 3 point seat belts?

Thanks! I'm just looking forward to the car shows as something fun to do, not really compete. We have a bunch of them around here and it's no fun driving the daily driver pickup to them

It's the 2011 Dodge Charger red, called paint code PR3 if memory serves me. I need to pull the paperwork. But it is REALLY bright red. That crappy photo was with my phone, at dusk. I do recall though, that it's darn near $900 per QUART (for the paint only; no reducer, etc). Pricey paint. Something about the red pigment comes from some foreign country, or something to that effect.

Yes, I fabricated sleeves that were welded into my 1981 rollbar so I could use shoulder harnesses. Not required based on being an '81, but I wanted them for safety. And so a cop doesn't have another reason to pull me over when he may not know that 1981 Jeep's didn't come with them, nor are they required by law on an '81 vehicle :smokin:

Awesome! very nice.

I am at a huge rod run in Pigeon Forge this weekend, literally miles of cars lined up along the strip. I have been amazed how much attention my Scrambler has been getting. I didn't expect to see any others, but so far I have seen five not including mine. I guess it just depends on what show you go to, this one has some of everything.

Post a few more pics when you get a chance.

Beautiful!

The car shows around here usually have a "pre 74" limit, but it never hurts to represent!

Where did you get the chrome piece that goes between the front and rear wheels at the bottom of the frame? Love the Jeep...awesome!

Thanks for the comments, folks! Those are factory /OEM chrome pieces (they were an option I think). I bought them from a local guy off of Craigslist. He just had them re-chromed before he totaled his Scrambler- that he was about to restore. They were still in the box and were to be installed after his restoration. I love the looks of them, but really squirmed as I had to drill 14-holes in my freshly painted Jeep to install them!

I hear ya, Randy. Some of our shows have limits too. But some don't. I am told that at some shows it would be classified as a truck, and be placed in a 1980's truck category. While in others, it would be in a general "4x4" category. It will be fun just to setup and answer a bunch of questions about the Corvette engine conversion, etc. I suppose I'm trying to say that I'm looking forward to the interaction with others who appreciate restorations (versus the competitive factor). While every piece of this Jeep was refurbished, and while I never cut one corner on anything, that was just for my satisfaction versus having expectations of winning a car show. Just looking to have some outdoor fun!

Folks, for those of you following my build, I need some serious steering help! Please see my post over in the suspension section. Many thanks!

What a gorgeous shop buddy!!!! I would have to keep him around.

So, the motivational thread by spankrjs got me to go out into my shop to check in on the project....

Strange, there's bird crap everywhere....I think I must have trapped a small bird in there at some point, but surely he got out....fast forward a few hours later, and I go back out there to grab something. Upon entering, something catches my eye...I have this guy living in my shop:

Well, that sure explains the bird crap everywhere! ***Note to self: when removing the old pot-bellied stove, be sure to plug the old chimney flue ***

I know, and so far this year, he hasn't returned! Even though I built him a 5-star hotel to live in last year! My neighbor across the street has had his owl return but this one hasn't. We verified that we both had them last year, so I know 'my owl' didn't just move across the street ;)
