Windshield Frame/Wiper Binding Issues

Here you go, I can be helpful too, not just inquisitive!

Better one.

Yes, kind of. The hole that splines over the motor shaft is round and splined, on the factory part. But, basically, YES, that is the part I cut off the wiper motor pivot arm:thumbsup:

Let me get this right, you need to place the long link UNDER the new short link when assembing the driver side pivot? you did not make it clear enough at that step. :D Just kidding.

This was a great write up. And a lot of work and research went into it. Let us know the long term results. I know in my experience, I would get it running fine for 10 minutes, think it was all good, then a few weeks down the road (or days) I would need the wipers, then kaboom! One time the parts shot at me while I was driving. Not a fun experience in the rain.

LOL:thumbsup:

So far, the improved wiper linkage system has worked fine, but I have only used it for maybe 20 minutes total. This Scrambler stays in the garage most of the time, since it's not a DD, so I don't get the opportunity to drive it in the rain too much:( BUT, I do have confidence in the fix, since I am about to drive across the country with this Scrambler:thumbsup: Hopefully, it holds together:fingerscrossed:

I will definitely keep this thread updated with my results, good or bad:cheers:

Whenever I use the wipers now, I pay special attention to any strange noises, due to all the mods I did to this important part of the vehicle. I heard a slight noise the other day, but it was just the sound of the wiper arm/blade pivoting back and forth as it changed direction. So far, so good:fingerscrossed:

i showed a friend this and he fixed his cj7 with it. its rained 3 days straight here and continues to work flawlessly. dont forget to sticky this

I am glad this "fix" helped somebody out:thumbsup:

My wipers are still working great, too, but I am curious to see if this is a long term fix. I would like to think so:shrug:

While I was trying to eliminate this problem yesterday, I also experimented with the following:

I mounted the wiper motor to first pivot linkage every possible way, with no "correct" way found: 1) curve side down, 2) curve side up, 3) short linkage on top of long linkage 4) long linkage on top of short linkage, and every single combination, never could get it to stop binding:(

I tried "shimming" the motor up off of the windshield frame. I figured that by shimming the motor out, it would effectively shorten the motor to first pivot rod. I shimmed it with two washers, it still bound up. I figured that if I shimmed it out any further, I would have ran into angularity binding:(

I tried mounting the motor with and without the rubber isolator piece, no change:(

I tried mounting the motor with and without the "VIN" plate, no change:(

Instead of modifying the factory motor to first pivot linkage, I wonder if I could just build a new one out of a piece of threaded rod and two spherical ball ends. As long as the balls in the ends are the same "height" as the factory bushings, this should work. If the balls are too "tall", then they wont fit on the factory pivots:confused: I might be better off modifying the factory linkage:shrug:

I used YJ wiper linkage and pivot arms. All you have to do is enlarge the pivot mounting holes. With this set up it is easier to find much better wiper arms and blades at any auto parts store.

Great news. And I can use the same motor. The next time I go to work on mine I will do that.

Thanks.

Bringing this back up as I plan to work on my wipers very soon.

UPDATE

My wiper arm fix worked for probably 40 hours of use. But, the other day, on the way to SMORR/Missouri, the driver side pivot broke, so I got to drive about 9 hours straight through the rain with no wipers:crazy:

I still need to wash the Jeep, unpack it, then I will take a look at the broke wiper pivot. From what I saw through the inspection hole, the flat part on the back of the pivot fell off:( I do not think this was a result of my custom arm, but more a result of the POS made in China so called "replacement parts" that they sell now:banghead:

Maybe the weight of the new arm caused the issue, but I doubt it:shrug: I will know more when I take it apart and do an autopsy.

I will post up what I find, but for now, I am on the look out for a NOS driver side pivot. I will try the dealership this afternoon:fingerscrossed:

Good luck with that. Hope that you find a pivot. I agree that the crown ones I have are not as good as the ones I replaced. Crap. I am not going to be as inventive. I picked up some YJ linkage/transmission complete yesterday. I will enlarge the pivot holes and install some point soon.

I put the YJ linkage and pivots on several scramblers and that system works great. Plus you can buy alot better wiper arms and blades at most auto parts stores.

Probably a quality issue.. unless the stroke is slightly long and slightly pulliing on the arm with every rotation... sounds like you have spent alot of time investigating this issue like myself but ill say this anyway.... make sure that you dont see any sign of the pivot being torqued on throughout its stroke.. such as the pivot moving around in the frame etc... My solution was like yours except I just made the factory arm adjustable by cutting its and welding a threaded sleeve to both sides and using some allthread to joint them. working ok for about a year now... here's hoping

Don, your post is what pushed me to use the YJ linkage. Thanks. Hopefully I get it done soon. Hoping for a permanent fix.

That's what I am thinking, too, quality issue:shrug:

I spent a few hours adjusting the arm, and by using fine thread all thread, I was able to get a smooth/no torque push-pull rotation. I think the little flat arm that is pressed on just fell off:shrug: I might be able to drill/tap/bolt it back together. Right now, I can pull the wiper pivot shaft right out the front of the windshield frame:rotfl:

The YJ linkage looks better then the CJ linkage, but how will it address the issue of the aftermarket windshield frames being made incorrectly:shrug:

I don't think it will fix THAT problem. I have to deal with that by moving to motor mounting holes. Or replacing it with an OEM windshield.

I concur.. the yj linkage wont fix the issue with a non oem frame... the mount and or linkage has to be manipulated to get smooth operation. Gr8dain.... perhaps that pivot arm can me tack welded back on..... I think mine was machined to a square end fitted into a square hole on the linkage tab... is yours the same?
