1984 Alaskan Postal Scrambler Build

This post has been long overdue, but between work, more work, and having a house built, there hasn't been much picture worthy progress to report on the Postal. I do have a much greater item to report on, April 16th my daughter was born! After a lengthy labor Ava Renee joined us at 7 lbs 14 oz, 21.5" long. Both my wife and Ava are doing great! We are truly blessed!

Proud dad!!!

Congrats man... that is great news.
I have 2 girls and each time they were born, I have pictures of them holding my thumb with their little hands as well as my hand holding their entire head cradled like a football... it shows you how small they were and how much they grow so quickly. I have them in my office so I am reminded of happier times while at work ;)

Best of luck!

Congratulations!

You can now look forward to the many "Garage Parties" with a very special helper.

Congrats!!! Enjoy these times cause they go by faster than you think. Even the 3 in the morning crying/eating/crying/pooping sessions...

Thanks everyone! Definitely the most life changing event I've ever experienced but in the best way possible! We just got home from Houston for my wife's graduation from the University of Houston with her O.D. in Optometry and I had a week of training on some new seismic and geologic interpretation software. We quickly realized how much stuff you need to have for a 1 month old to spend 9 days away from home! We used to be very efficient travelers; now not so much! Got to see a lot of old friends while down in Houston which was awesome but the last night before we were to drive back to Kansas, our vehicle was broken into while me, my wife, and Ava were at the outlet mall NW of Houston in the Cypress area; not a fun experience. The low life's broke out the back passenger door window and stole our milk pump, cooler for milk, baby bed, and jumper cables. And of course the mall doesn't have security cameras in the parking lots. They didn't touch anything in the front of of the vehicle (I had several pair of sunglasses and a valentine one radar detector in the console that weren't touched) but did ransack the back half. I think the thieves thought the pump and all were either purses or laptops; not sure what they were after with the baby bed although it was in a rectangular shaped case. What the in the hell is wrong with people? I have never had a CHL license since Kansas is an open carry state; but after this incident and realizing what potentially could have occurred if my wife happened to be in the car feeding Ava and they had shown up; I (and hopefully my wife if I can convince her) will now be getting our CHL's. Incidences like this make us appreciate living and raising our baby in a small rural town; crap like this just doesn't happen where I'm from. We were able to get a new window installed the next day so our trip home wasn't delayed to terribly much. I'm still pissed about the whole break-in but aside from that it was great to be in our old stomping ground!

We are still cleaning glass out of it:

Tore up the door around the window too:

Bringing this thread back from the dead! Have had a lot going on over the past year! Completed construction on our new home midway through November and finally got all moved in. Needless to say between work, my little girl, the new house, finishing a junkyard 4.0 MPFI head swap onto my '85 CJ7, and bow season, I haven't gotten much done on the Postal. But that is changing quickly as bow season is over and the house is done! That being said, my one free night last week I did get the AW4 installed behind the 4.0. I wanted to get it stabbed in so I can get the correct clocking I am needing for the dana 300, as well as get get the amount of drop (if any) I will need for the skid plate/cross member. The plan is to go as flat as possible without getting the transmission or transfer case into the underside of the tub while using a flat skid plate from barnes4wd.com. The way it looks now, should be between the 0-2" drop range.

My next big challenger I want to finish up is the wiring. Back to one of my wiring questions on my post #8 regarding some of the transmission wiring, particularly some of the wiring associated with the transmission diagnostics port and other plugs that ran into the cab. I have pictures of all of these back on post #8. Anyone familiar with this part of the wiring?

One last question, would there be any way to use the existing XJ cruise control wiring and make it work with the CJ turn signal cruise control? If it is going to be a real pain I may just eliminate this wiring. I thought about trying to make this all work but haven't done a lot of digging into how much work it would be. Anyone with a CJ make the cruise control work or would an aftermarket system be much easier to work with an install if cruise control is necessary?

Did I miss the thread on this addition with all the pics I know you meant to post???? :D

I apologize, I did totally forget to load up the GW pictures! Will hopefully get they done within the next week once I find my good camera they are on!

My daughter rode home from the hospital in a Jeep and they have basically been the only vehicles she has ridden in. I think it will be safe to say she will take after her dad when it comes to vehicles! It's amazing how much she has changed and grown since that picture!

I'm still trying to figure out the plugs and wiring from my post #8 if anyone can help!!

Also, I had a few questions regarding The XJ wiring for the AC and cruise. (I copied this next portion of the text from another post I made over in the electrical section). I'm at the current stage I am going through the wiring and thinning out what isn't needed from the XJ harness. I have gotten to the portion of the harness that has the cruise control and AC wiring. This got me to thinking that I may want to add cruise control and AC to the Jeep at some point in the future.

Has anyone who has done the complete 4.0/AW4 swap made the XJ cruise control wiring work in their CJ? Ideally, I would like to use an original CJ turn signal cruise lever that was offered in the Jeeps. Is this possible or would I be better off just purchasing an aftermarket cruise control kit and be time and money ahead?

With the AC, I would hope to use all CJ components except for the compressor. I know the XJ AC wiring is much more complicated than what is in the CJs. On my '85 CJ7, I did a junk yard 4.0 head swap with MPFI and kept my CJ AC but this complete 4.0 with the XJ compressor and wiring is new to me. Anyone with a 4.0 swap make this work? If so, any insight as to how you made it work(wiring, etc)? I'm just trying to save myself from cutting out some wiring that I may end up needing down the road! Thanks for the help!

Just a few updates. I believe I have most all the wiring figured out and mostly completed at this point! There is only the contour fans and a few other things to finish hooking up and the engine side of the harness should be completed. While I had all the wiring apart, one of the many wiring mods I did was I went ahead with the headlight wiring upgrade using two of the relays and fuses in the XJ PDC. I ran 12 gauge wiring for the headlight power feed and grounds. The high and low beams are isolated in separate fuses and relays so no matter what could potentially happen, I will always have some form of headlights that will work! For the headlight connectors I used a pair that is made of ceramic and has a sealed back so dirt and junk can't get into the connection. I got the terminals from Innova Design & Distributing, Inc. the have several different wire gauge sizes, wire lengths, and the option to crimp, solder, or do both where the wire is connected to the terminals. Here is the website:
http://www.itroll.us/H4.ht.html or headlightplugs.com
The terminals are crimped and soldered.

I also was able to clean up, inspect, re-seal, and repaint the transfer case.

I pulled the yoke and front driveshaft from the 93 XJ I am parting out and put it out the rear output shaft of the dana 300 so I can run a CV style rear driveshaft. I plan to have a local shop modify the driveshaft to work.

Being that I'm running the AW4 I needed to run a clocking ring/spacer so the input shaft on the dana 300 would seat correctly. This also meant I needed to run a double sided seal on the input shaft on the dana 300. I messed up the edge on the first seal installing it and didn't want to take a chance of it leaking so I went ahead and put another new seal in to be safe:

Here is a part number for the double sided seal I am using: Moog 710928

Once I get the wiring for the ford contour fans completed and the transfer case installed I will get back into the body work. With work (insanely busy) and a family my jeep time is limited to 9-midnight a few nights a week but I am managing to make some progress! I am able to take some time that was dedicated towards my new home and get it back to my Jeeps since the house is done ; minus the yard and landscaping. My daughter also has another major announcement to make for her birthday:

Yep, my wife and I are expecting our second! Her tentative due date is October 28th so the completion date goal for this postal is set for mid October!

And because I don't have any specific GW pics, this is the best I can come up with!

Here is the parts truck '93 XJ, I have what's left of it listed in the classifieds:

Nice idea on the dual circuit for the headlights. Let us know the name of those connectors too. My girls are 17 months apart. Only thing I can say is good luck and congratulations.

I upgraded the post above to include the source for the ceramic headlight plugs. I cannot take credit for the dual circuit headlights. I got the idea from DirtyB's headlight upgrade thread. It seems I always get a bunch of work done but never post on a daily or at least weekly basis like I should. Instead I let the info and pictures build and then finally get time to post it all but do so in a much more condensed version!
