newbie here, new to cj-8's but not to cj's

I am waiting to introduce myself until the deal is final because i dont want to jinx my potential purchase.

are all cj-8's scramblers? i thought they were a trim package available on all cj-8 models?

if it was a package add on, how many were made?

thanks!

love the forum, it has more of a community feel VS other forums.

All CJ-8s are Scramblers, not just a trim package. Somewhat similar to how all TJs are Wranglers.

Welcome and good luck with the purchase.

That's an interesting question, if you really think about it. The various CJ models never really had any other primary designation/name other than CJ-1 through CJ-7, even though some had various "special" designations and/or appearance packages such as Golden Eagle, Jamboree, Laredo, Limited, Renegade, Tuxedo, etc.

In the case of the CJ-8, the appearance package decals that indicated "Scrambler" across the hood had/has become the dominant designation for a CJ-8. From inception in 1981, had Jeep used the standard Renegade and Laredo decals along with the Scrambler decals on various CJ-8 model appearance packages, the CJ-8 model may be known today as specifically a CJ-8 and not a Scrambler unless it was so equiped with the specific package. Thus, many or most refer to the CJ-8 model as "Scrambler Renegade", "Scrambler Laredo" or simply "Scrambler", as opposed to other CJ owners who may own CJ5 Renegade or CJ-7 Golden Eagle, Laredo, Limited, etc. models.

I wonder if the military Wrangler is referred to as a J-8 or other.

I didn't think the Postal 8s were Scramblers.

Technically, they are not, but most folks will refer to them as a "Postal Scrambler". Technically, Scramblers were only the models that had "Scrambler" hood graphics, or the later models with the little plastic badge. I wonder how the Aussie folks refer to their World-Cab models?

Getting completely technical: I thought the CJ-8 "Scramblers" were just the ones sold in the half-cab pick-up configuration (essentially all U.S. CJ-8s), whereas the World Cab top with windows was a CJ-8 "Overlander"? (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

I don't have the slightest idea what the CJ-8s with windowless World Cabs would have been called (the postal tops, for export, sold as delivery vehicles).

And then there are the CJ-8 postals, which are just weird.

my title has scrambler on it. Anyone else say the same thing or something else??

I can't dig out the titles without some effort, so I checked my state registration and insurance documents.

State Registration indicates: "Jeep 2D" for the '81 and "Jeep Truck" for the '83
Insurance indicates: : "CJ8" for both

Cobra5,

Good to see you over here and best of luck with the upcoming deal - hope it works out for you!

You should post some pics of your restored '5 - it was a top notch one for sure!

Assuming you're getting a Scrambler for more family room.

Will this one be turn key ready, or it receive a treatment similiar to your CJ-5?

The state of Kansas decoded my VIN as a 1982 Jeep Wrangler, so I hope that isn't the deciding authority..... :roll eyes:

Wow, that's scary. Did you buy it from some guy selling from the trunk of his car?

WELCOME Cobra 5

I just checked 7 Scrambler titles: 2 CJ-8...2 Scrambler...1 Jeep...2Truck...

Ain't technology GRAND?

Mine is listed as "UP" on my Colorado title, which translates to "Utility Passenger" according to the CDR, and includes broncos, landies, and Cherokees.
