How exactly do those go on anyway? I've never really seen them unapplied. I expected them to have a backing on both sides, peel off back, position the whole thing, stick and smooth, then peel off front cover.

From those pics it looks like it only has backing on the back
 
It does have a backing on both sides and you do peel of the back. What most people don't understand is that you actually apply the decal over mist or thin layer of water before you pull off the backing on the sticky side. This allows you to be able to slide the decal a little for alignment. It also lets you gently squeegee the decal flat and get all the air bubbles out. The water mist will then evaporate in a couple hours and your decals are stuck for good. There are other little tricks like cutting slots between the letters on the hood decal as WM69 mentioned. I you don't cut the slots you will have a helluva time installing those letters.

I've never done this before but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. :)

Not meaning to bog the thread but PG supplies a gel which works well. It is time consuming and my first set got binned

The heat gun is not needed and almost useless.

Snow will be here soon enough, but I needed the sides off so I can get the UK Jeep on there to trailer it down to get its new exhaust on... can't drive it unfortunately with the straight pipes heating up the gas tank and the whole no windshield glass thing and it not having a sticker either.

I did that late last night in the dark... first time I ever used those spotlights on the side of the garage, glad I put them in now!
