My old 1981 SCRAMBLER returns 25 years later

Awesome!

What stahl converter are you using?

When you heading back north?

The converter is a 2500 stahl. It's loose for crawling, but great is the sand. I have a 1200 stahl for rocks from when I rarely played at silver lake. Once I got use to doing 2 foot for control it's not too bad. Heading north Friday.

We did Waldens ridge today. It's a truck width at the top. Had a great time this wek.

Made it back home from the week of AWESOME wheeling and great scenery at Windrock.

The only trouble I had with the Scambler all week was a burned plug wire on the exhaust. The gas cap was leaking on up hill angles (witch I fixed by trimming the gasket to fit in the armor) And a rear axle seal started leaking. Couldn't be happier with how stable and how well the Jeep performed.

Here is a link to some vidios of the group

And here is the photo bucket with 140 random pics.

The only damage after a week of hardcore blue, black, and double black diamond trails was some pin striping from brush (most will buff out). And a "badge of honor" from a tree on Waldens ridge. The trees were about a inch narrower than my beadlocks, so I worked the steering to get the tires through, lots of throttle to get the wheels though, and some luck. When the rear wheels popped through we slid down the mountain a bit and the rear quarter kissed the tree.

Not bad for how hard it hit

Kids will be happy. I put the "kid cage" and the full top back on today. They been asking since I started driving it again this spring.

first time I've had the soft top on with the full doors. They don't fit too bad, a small gap on the back side, but the top edge is tight.

Dunes next weekend?

I am hoping so...........but reality says probably not. we have cheer competition Saturday all day. so if we do it'll be late Saturday and Sunday for a quick trip.

it's sad, the camper is there, ready to go, and we haven't used it yet :banghead:

Been a while since I did a update to this thread.....to busy enjoying summer :bacon:

there's a couple upgrades, well changes, that I've done.

I started playing with my fuel injection again because the flat spot, uneven AFR left to Right was still irritating me. First thing that I did was pull the GMPP intake off and swapped a Short Summit dual plane intake on. It was about the same, maybe worse. So more reading and the search was on for a single plane intake to try. I found a RHS single plane on Ebay for a decent price. The bonus was it has injector bungs for direct port machined in. That way done the road I can go direct port. It may be a short road. I already have the injectors installed, fuel rails, fuel rail mounts, and wiring harness built and installed.

Here is where I had to modify for my A/C compressor and add a bung for the Vortec bypass.

fuel rail, injector, and mount mock up

And the good news is, once installed, my uneven flat spot is GONE!!!!!!! after 2 years of screwing around. bottom line, the Terminator EFI didn't like the dual plane.

The other thing I did was pick up a set of Toyo Open County MT's for dunes and street, the Mud Graplers were way noisy.

The latest cool addition is a trophy for 1st place in the show and shine at the Two Trackers 4x4 fest military edition in Hudsonville.

Nice work on the trophy. You deserve it after the hard work you have put in to it. I was hoping to make the event as it is 2 minutes from home, but it didnt work out.

And nice shirt choice as well...

Thanks, I was looking a little rough in the pic. I had been out on the obstacle coarse for 8 hours spotting rigs through. The event was great for a first year thing, 800 people through the gate. We raised about 15K for the vets, And they're planning on doing it again next year. The course was fun, .6 miles in less than 1.5 acres.

Congradulations on all accomplishments. We are planning on heading up on the 18th and again the last week of October to close the Dunes for the winter (And the house).

Congrats on your trophy as well.

we'll be up this weekend, then it'll be hit and miss. School is back in, so........band, volleyball, soccer.......life

And there's a some updates I need to add to this thread. I'll get details when I get some pics organized. My terminator EFI is now multiport, I been testing back and forth with a Lincoln Navigator fan and my flexlite clutch fan, and have a new monster sized transmission cooler. Just been too busy camping and cruising the Jeep to update.

Been a looonnnnggggg time since I did a real update on here, summer was busy and too much fun stuff to be typing here.

The new intake has been on all summer and running great. The single plane made it run nice and even on both banks. but..............since I had the injectors in it. I put together a harness and wiring all eight injectors to the computer. WOW what a difference. I gained a TON of low end and cruising torgue. And since I can't leave well enough alone this winter it will get the eight LS coils installed so it'll be coil near plug.

Next I did some fan testing. I've been run a Flexlite 19" seven blade clutch fan with a Hayden extreme duty clutch. The fan keeps the Jeep cool, but takes a noticeable amount of horsepower when it starts to lock up. I had a Lincoln Navigator fan that I ran when I first put the Jeep together. So I reinstalled that and ran it for a few weeks. The electric fan keeps it cool and takes less power to run, and is quieter. But it has to run most of the time on the street. Bottom line, I went back to the clutch fan. I didn't want the big electrical drain all the time, and my under hood temps are about 20 degrees cooler with the mechanical fan.

The clutch fan. The blade sits about 1/2 way in the should when mounted, this thing moves more air than anything I've seen. And I "tuned" the heat spring to come on at a cooler temp.

The Navigator, works great, quiet, draws a ton of power, cools at low speed like no other.

Next......................

When I was running the electric fan. I noticed once I got my trans hot doing laps in the dunes it would stay hot. The fan would pull the engine back down and the trans would stay at 200 for a long time. It did it before, but I figured it was because the cooler in the radiator was hot. The clutch didn't engage fully until the engine was about 210.

Not that 200 is way too hot for a trans, but it's hotter than I like. I had the cooler circuit running through the radiator, through a small cooler in front of the radiator, and to a 30 plate cooler in the back with a fan. I didn't really care for the miles of tubing. And I was wondering if all the lines were picking up heat from the exhaust.

The solution...............
A 11"x25"x3" stacked plate cooler. The tubes in it are full 3" with fins inside and out.

It's mounted in the rear under the body with 1/2" lines running down the center of the tub away from the exhaust. I forgot to get pics with the 2 10" fans, but here are a couple installed pics. Oh yah.........it added 5 quarts of fluid to the system.............

I've got the fans setup with a Auto-off-on switch. In auto they keep it about 180. I left them continuous on while running the dunes when it was 85* outside and the tranny stayed at about 165*

I think that problem is solved :headbang:
