Heads up: Tapatalk going away on CJ-8.com

Ever wish you'd never done something? That's where we are with Tapatalk.

This is incredibly unfortunate to have to say, but it's been a long time in coming. Matt and I have made the decision to remove Tapatalk from this forum. Timing is to be determined and we will have the best possible alternative for mobile/phone/tablet use in place before it happens. That said, it's likely going to be a compromise and lessen some functionality, sadly, we have no choice.

The list of things that have led us to this is incredibly long and I ask that folks please keep in mind that all we are doing is looking out for our users' security, the integrity of this forum and it's data.

The basic issue is that, for years, Tapatalk has been eroding the ability of forum owners to control what happens via Tapatalk and trying to force forum users into the "Tapatalk world" where they make money by serving ads. In doing this, they've made some seriously poor choices for functions/features that have gotten to the point where we're backed into a corner.

Some may remember when ads started being served through taptalk on this forum without our consent (from which the forum would have seen no money anyway). That was truly the beginning of the end, everyone knows we're very ANTI-ads.

They've finally crossed a line from which there's no coming back.

We currently have a mobile style that is available for use on your phone/tablet that can be enabled by using your mobile browser and going to the drop down in the lower left corner of any forum page to select "Default Mobile Style"

We know that this will be a massive transition and it may mean losing images that were posted to Tapatalk's servers. This is a perfect example of one of the things that they made default to "force" forum owners to continue using the service. They HAD THE ABILITY to leave the upload setting default as the forum's server, but instead they set it to their server in order to further trap forum owners and force them to keep using the platform.

There will be no debate on this, the decision is made, and we simply wanted to be sure to let everyone have as much warning as possible of the coming change. I will update this thread when we have a plan and ask for input if there are things where we have multiple options.

Again, sorry to say this and exceedingly sorry that we ever went down this path.
Eric

Thanks for the heads up Eric. Can't say I'm tech savvy enough to understand all the mumbo-jumbo related to running a website but I understand getting screwed. I'll ask the wife to help me work out a non-TaT method.
Do you have a timeline/est. for when this goes into effect?

I always support security and control of my own information, even if I did post the photo on Facebook. Thanks for looking out for us and this great platform we have for sharing our experience, information and ourselves.

I'd say the biggest loss will be all the photos but I sure do understand their trap. Wow..

Perhaps we can capture them somehow. There will be many build threads with no photos as a result if we don't manually redo them ? I would say for instance that for any given member say that has used Tapatalk upload owner, given time to grab their shots and edit the posts before the plug is pulled. Just throwing out ideas.

Simply put, "You lead, we will follow." This is 99% the forum I follow. I know enough about wht you and Matt have done to make this "Family" what it is today. A big thank you for all you do for us.

It's actually been a long time since I really tried to use the forum on my phone with the normal (Slate blue for me) theme and it now seems to run quite well! Photo posting was the biggest issue I had that made me want to use tapatalk, but Tapping the image icon and "upload photos" now acts properly, at least on my iPhone 6, AS LONG AS the image is small enough. I bet we can implement a setup that auto-resizes the images and then we can remove that file size limit. We will look into that.

Maybe the mobile theme won't even really me necessary?

No doubt this is what sucks the worst. I am assuming that the images will go away, but haven't looked into that. Would only make sense that their server only allows use of the images if they see that you have tapatalk installed, but who knows.

Ugh. While tapatalk has their issues from the user side as well the potential loss of all of the photos I have posted is aggravating. I guess I will go to my build thread and try to replace all of my pics. What a freaking mess. (1st world problems, I know)

I stand by you Eric. I will try to use the web/mobile interface.

EDIT*******

I am not seeing the mobile default style when I use the drop down menu. I tried in safari as well as chrome.

And I guess I need to learn how to upload pictures to this site rather than using tapatalk. I could go back and use photobucket too, but that may have problems too some day. The little photo icon is giving me problems on my phone.

weird. I could see the pic on my phone

Someone messaged me about the missing theme, that may be a PC vs Mac issue. I see it on my mac laptop and iPhone both. Reality is that I don't see a need for the mobile theme though, the slate blue works great on my iPhone and I found the ability to auto-resize photos...

testing resizing from the computer... this is a 6 MB image at a huge size:

BTW, there is an option that you could set to have your photos uploaded to the forum instead of the tapatalk servers, this setting caused people problems intermittently, so it may be that some people used it (I set it to upload to the forum myself at least once).

If it was uploaded to tapatalk's server, when you go to edit the post you'll see something that clearly has a tapatalk URL in there. If it's simply got ATTACHMENTXXXX or a URL that shows www.cj-8.com, it should be fine.

I am sure that I will figure something out. The slate blue is fine visually, but I may have to set my phone font size to "old man - Blind" setting. As I always have to pinch and spread to see the text on the screen and then scroll left and right. Getting old sucks.

And I will have to find how to resize the photos using my iPhone.

Maybe you see the mobile style on your iPhone because you are a mod? No clue, but I don't see it on my iPhone.

Here's an example of what a Tapatalk hosted image URL looks like when you go to edit the post. NOTE: I replaced the opening "[" with an "{" so that it would show the text and not the link.

How do I get the default mobile style? When I go to that drop down on safari on my 6s the only choices are Jamaica and Slate Blue....

Good riddance, the first time I got a pop up saying "why don't you join Tapatalk, everyone is looking at your profile," well... I've got more important things to focus on.

This is the best forum out there! And the best people! And the best moderators and owners!

If I have to use something else to access it, that's fine. It's worth it!

You guys rock!
