Front Fenders/Firewall Attachment

Putting my 1983 Scrambler back together. Is there a gasket or anything between firewall and fenders?
Also, looking for original type side steps.

Nothing between. I took my fenders off once and applied a very thing layer of silicone Some people say no to that. Steps are around, you just have to keep looking around. Took mine off 30 some years ago to put on some better side protection and they are up in the attic in mint condition waiting to go back on when I get old and feeble so I can get up there to put my soft top on.

Take a look at body caulking, it’s a 3M product. It should be available at any place that sells automotive paint supplies.

This is correct, according to my body/paint man silicone can cause rust. It has to do with an acid that is in the silicone.

I know I have a set of steps in the shed, but not sure on the condition, if I recall, they are a bit rougher... not sure if you are looking for a fixer upper set or not.

I have never used it but 3M make a body seam double stick tape.

I have not used it for this application, but you might also consider fender bead for a VW bug...I used it on my trailer, would be about the right size for the front jeep fender joint

We have a store here called Skycraft; sells surplus items. I bought a 3M product, probably same as referenced earlier. Mine came in”beads” you pulled apart and applied. Looked like the material we use to plug tires although not same product. Very sticky and rubbery, about an inch wide when compressed and put it between firewall and fender to keep them from rubbing together. However, some more knowledgeable than I might advise it traps water and promotes corrosion. I have not had that issue for the ten years it’s been there. Taking it apart may be an issue....

Yep.
The most common type of silicone sealant is "acetoxy cure" that releases acetic acid while curing (it gives off a vinegar smell while curing).
This at best will only damage your new paint finish, more likely it will promote corrosion.
I've seen bulkheads and windshield frames destroyed from the use of the wrong sealant in the attempt to prevent leaks.
Anytime I use silicone sealant on metal I make sure it is "neutral cure" to prevent corrosion.

You may also consider clear vinyl "chip guard".

That sticky strip stuff sounds like windshield setting butyl- most parts stores sell it. Works great for mounting fenders but I have seen it discolor white paint but only where touching.

so.... inquiring minds want to know... would you use it to replace freshly cleaned and or painted fenders?

I have used it to mount fenders, rockers, tail lights, sealing seams, etc. The only time I noticed any discoloration was on fresh white paint. That being said, I wouldn’t use it anywhere where it would be seen, as it does like to attract dust if exposed.

Another idea that just came to mind. I remember seeing some some factory new YJ door hinges that had what appeared to be aluminum tape on them. Might be another idea.
