The '83 - Family Man

Paint starting to go down. Wanted a modern take on the original 2A Mist Silver. Went with Bright Silver Metallic (PS2) from the Ram truck line.

I’m all about the white letters showing. Unless you get some funky brand...

Always remember as a kid seeing a guy in a Corvette with big white letters “ Jetzon Super Revenger GT”. Found that amazingly hilarious.

However, there is a “Futura Scrambler A/P”. Sold by Pep Boys. I used to sell these, not a bad tire, super cheap too. Might be cool if it didn’t say Futura. B514D3BB-5BC8-4D35-891E-BAFA6319F4A2.png

White letters it is. My new truck has white letters out and it looks good. I was leaning that way anyway. The BFGs have maybe 1k miles on them so I’ll keep them and just flip them.

While I patiently await time to continue my build (some paint issues caused a delay) I did find some time this week to rebuild/restore my Warn 8274 that I had on Family Man when I brought it into the shop that worked flawlessly aside from an oil leak due to a faulty drum O ring. Now I have some issues related to the rebuild.

Background - this isn't my first 8274 rebuild but it has been over 5 years since the last time I did it. I am at a loss. I replaced virtually everything you can using the rebuild kit from Warn which I have done in the past.

Got it all back together looking pretty and it doesn't work. Well, it does actually work however without any load it acts as if I am trying to pull 10k pounds with it. Just sitting on the workbench with no load whatsoever! Power in or out it starts then grinds to a halt as if something is dragging it down. It also will not free spool. My guess would be something wrong with the brake assembly however I have taken it back apart 3 times now and rebuilt - I even followed a very detailed video on YouTube from a guy who does this often it seems. The battery I am using for testing is fully charged and I have good connections so I don't think it is a power issue.

So before I tear into it for a 4th time - any ideas what to look for??

Dumb question (I've never been into an 8274) it's not possible to run it, even as a test situation, without the brake assembly or maybe even the drum? Basically, run the motor with no load of any kind straight off the solenoids?
