Meet Red, my 81 Restomod Build

This waiting for parts is aggravating, to say the least.

Quick question- I can’t remember if the wiper pivot gasket (leather washer) goes behind the windshield frame metal or on the outside under the thick keyed washer. I thought it went on the outside, but I ordered a second set and they are both huge, as big as the pivot flange. Way bigger than the thick nut. Makes me think they go on the inside…

The fiber washers go on the outside of the frame, right against the metal.

So- stupid question. I have ordered 2 different sets of washers. They seem to be made of leather. Why the heck are they so big? The original ones that fell apart were the same outer diameter as the keyed spacer. All the new ones are at least 1/8” larger. Looks horrible. Any issues with trimming them down, or dying them black, or both?

No idea, I have not ordered any in a long time. I made some new ones out of thin cork/gasket material last time I needed some. Pretty simple trace, cut one notch, done

Thanks Raymond! As usual, I’m really overthinking this. 🙄

So…still waiting for parts. So I decided it was time to accomplish something, anything. I had been playing mental gymnastics trying to figure out the upper radiator mount. It not only had to hold the radiator down, but keep it from moving side to side, and also act as a vibration dampener. I ended up using some square rubber pads, pirated from the lower amounts of F350 radiators. All that junk I brought home when I was working for Ford is starting to pay off. I made some buttons out of UHMWP, tapped them, and bolted both of them to a piece of aluminum that I’d bent up. Install three nutserts in the grille shell, and bingo! Done. One more thing off the list. Now if the parts would only get here.

Here’s the pads mounted to the aluminum. 4375F147-F66A-41EB-B7CF-9D89155A75F2.jpeg

Nutserts in the grille shell. The pads fit into that top channel, and the two bolts that hood the fan on also locate the pads side-to-side.

Finished installation. I still have to either paint it black or brush the aluminum. FD7EC130-E77A-4DC3-A15B-21D4A4426D3E.jpeg112A4666-A283-48ED-A424-F1FFD30A8BA1.jpeg

Well, Crap. Strike 3 on the dash pads. Ordered one from Amazon, damaged in shipping. Never even got it. Ordered another, damaged in the box. Tried Morris- it just arrived really warped and not usable in my opinion. Spoke with them, we’ll see what they want to do. But that still leaves me with no dash pad. Refinishing the old one is looking better and better.

This one is really warped in the wiper motor area. 62A217AE-60A9-4AA5-B940-C24B6183AAA1.jpeg

I thought I’d see if I could straighten it out- no way. 83BC5DA6-E899-4DF3-B273-C03BFCFA711B.jpeg1D2E1649-F6CD-4478-9022-822E34633B39.jpeg

I put on my old one just for fun. It sure fits nice. Wish the new ones did. FE2BC5F9-57BB-43C7-9804-7B9CDE02BE17.jpeg

I've had terrible luck with Morris. Quadratec has always been good about returns but Morris leaves a lot to be desired in my experience.
I usually go with Quadratec, but Morris was having a decent sale…

Well, I’m pleasantly surprised. They are sending me a replacement, and don’t want the old one back either. Morris actually said that “the manufacturer” apologizes and is sending it direct to me. We’ll see if it’s any better. 🤞🏻

Well, as of today all the under dash wiring is finished. All the back of the dash wiring is also finished. And the harness to the rear is finished. I’m just waiting on a good dash pad, so I can fit a cowl seal and button this all up. (The satellite antenna wire goes through the cowl seal so it all fits together in a specific order.)

But…our 42nd anniversary is next week so we’re taking a week to go to the coast.

Finished up the indicator lights. Is it a perfect color match? No. Is it close enough to look good? Yes. It’s odd how colors seem to change depending on the ambient light, and I don’t think there’s really any way to match OLED lights with LED’s. The pictures make the Speedhut lights look greenish… Anyways. Put quick disconnects on the back with heat shrink for stress relief. They will plug right into the harness I made. You could sell those. I’m a buyer
