Advise on price to ask for CJ-8 Scrambler

My husband owned this Scrambler from 1986 to present. He has passed and I would like to sell it. It is running well per our car repair shop. A friend who is a car dealer offered me $12,000. My husband thought it was worth between $17,000 and $20,000. I would like advise on what to ask for it. My son in law looked under the jeep, and could not find any rust.

If you were selling for 12K, Probably a few of us would make the drive today. With 1 picture there is not much to go on without knowing more. Your husband is a lot closer in what that’s worth probably. Sorry for your loss. Looks like a nice Scrambler .
 
You can post one picture at a time without joining. A few pictures underneath, the floors and engine will give us a good idea of value. Your car dealer 'friend' is looking to make a very nice profit off of the Scrambler is my guess.

Your best bet for making the best return/ highest sale price is probably Bring a Trailer. However, it will simply go to the highest bidder, whomever that may be. If you are after finding the best home for it where you can probably maintain a relationship with the new owner than this is likely your best site for that.
 
Car dealers buy low, sell high, thats there business plan. Even friends in the business need to profit.. So you can not expect any dealer to give you actual retail value.

Depending on how fast you need the proceeds of sale. If you have the time...

Place for sale on Craig's list, Facebook market, etc... a couple of thousand above what your departed husband valued.
I'm sure he was correct on pricing.
If it doesn't sell after 60 days, then consider other options
 
Texas jeeps usually have very little rust. That's a big plus. Is the engine a 6 cylinder or something else? 4 speed or 5 speed or automatic? What year is the Scrambler? Does the dash have a tach and clock? Your husband was more than likely correct in pricing it or maybe a little low. All depends on the details.
 
I am in Richmond if you would like a 3rd party opinion.

If you were selling for $12k I would be at your house in less than an hour ( much to the dismay of my better half).

The rims are fairly desirable vintage versions of 70’s mopar muscle cars (like the general lee).

Without more details, I believe it to be a solid $20k Jeep. But, like all things, it is worth what someone is willing to pay.

It's a 1982, 4 speed. I don't know the cylinder but when I look up 82 Scrambler it says 6 cylinder. It does have a clock, does not look like its working. Also the fuel gage doesn't work. That was on his list to fix, but never did.

Like already said, if dealer is offering 12 it is worth more than that. Looks very nice in the pictures.

You will find this forum much more friendly and helpful than facebook groups.
 
Looks like an early 82 without the 3-point seat belts. If the dash has the clock and tach it may be a Laredo. Picture of the seats, if original, would confirm that. Being an 82 it will have the wide track axles which is better than the narrow 81 axles. Seeing the pictures you have posted leads me to believe that your husband was correct on the valuation. Looks like a nice Scrambler for someone to enjoy tinkering with and driving. Hopefully you will find a good home for it.

I looked at this today, I so wanted to say it is a $20k Jeep. Unfortunately, there are some issues that prevent this.

Alana you are a very nice young lady I enjoyed meeting you and looking over your Jeep. I hope you get what you feel is a fair price. BTW, my wife was fine with me being late after explaining the situation, so no worries.

Honestly, the dealer‘s offer was not as “seriously under value” as I originally thought. They would have been able to flip it at $12k, but they would not be making much profit after they get it sale ready. I usually don’t trust “dealer” offers, but this time it was not outrageous.

Some interesting items, originally a 4 cyl California Jeep, now a 6 cyl w/ T5 transmission and hydraulic clutch, Denim high back seats, Tach/Clock, has the Carb Check light, no factory stripes, aftermarket scrambler logo installed in the ‘80s, front frame cover. Original paint with plenty of patina.

All in all, a great scrambler that needs some TLC.
 
I hope she'll post it here first. It's too bad they can't keep it in the family.

Ordinarily I'd need to delete this thread because we don't allow "what's it worth" threads here.

I'm allowing this one out of respect for the situation and now that we have a member who's seen it in person.

I'm seriously hopeful that @ag4ever took a couple dozen photos for her so they can be added and treat 12k as an asking price?
