This is why there are locking gas caps, I've decided that it's not to protect your gas, but if your gas cap key is on your key ring, you remove the gas cap with the key, leave the key attached, fill, and then you literally can't drive off without putting the cap back on before removing your key.

Bought one because it was all they had after I drove off and lost one and it's lasted a decade as a result. Come to think of it, it was one of the longer national trips...

Mater got one as well as soon as I got it driving.
 
Just what a couple of old Jeepers need to be doing. Searching around for our gas cap and our keys. I used a locking cap for years and figured I really didn’t need it since it sits inside a garage.

I’d wager just about everyone who ever lost their cap knows where they put it—before they drove off.

Can’t do that if the key is attached. No searching involved. That’s why it’s brilliant.
