Trying to identify if the options on this jeep are real or suppose to be on it. Not sure on decals, color seems correct 2C. It has what looks like tonneau cover tie downs, spare tire rack on roll bar. How rare is this jeep? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Would like to restore this one.17477068440817503592820838206738.jpg

Are CJ-8s rare? No

Are they less common than CJ-7s? Yes

Can you decode option on a Jeep? Generally, no. You have 3EB seats, which are slate blue. This eliminates a Laredo as being possible. That makes it either a Base model or Renegade (SR). Slate Blue is a generally rare color and desirable. As far as decals, they look to be a dealer add on graphics package. Being a 2C - Slate Blue Metallic and 3EB Slate Blue Seats makes it slightly more rare. This Jeep should have a 258 I-6 engine with a T-5 manual transmission and Dana 300 transfer case. That is about as far as you can go for option decoding. AMC & Jeep were terrible about documentation.

Does it make financial sense to restore a CJ-8? No

Should you restore it if you have an emotional attachment or like the process or want the end result? Yes

Very cool Jeep! Good luck with the decision.

I don’t know about less common than CJ7s, any more. I hardly see either. I went to Moab last year and not many 7s at all,and 1 8 by its self. I went to the National last year and I saw more 8s in all my life. Last time I saw that many 7s was at a Jeep Jamboree in 1994. I’m lucky I just have to drive over by Raymond’s to see a great collection of both. Otherwise I would feel almost alone.

FAAAAAR less common. See -7s all the time on the road and at the sand dunes (giant 4x4 show every weekend). Easily 100 to 1 over seeing any other Scrambler that I don't already know personally.

Bingo. Well put. When I start seeing questions about "how rare" I always want to make something like this post to shake people out of the "classic car" mentality.

CJ-8s outside of dead stock, perfectly original survivors are not "valuable," they are not collectible (in the terms most folks think of collectible cars as an investment) and you will lose your shirt "restoring" one for financial reasons because the value added to the expense is simply not there unless you can do ALL of the work yourself and put no value on your time (and maybe not even then.)

HOWEVER, if you want to do it because YOU WANT IT then go for it! But do not worry about colors, decals, options, rarity, etc. just do what you want.

It's definitely a great looking Jeep and I'd throw some Poppy's Patina on it and drive the wheels off of it just like it is. :smokin:

Oh, and agree that you have a dealer-applied decal set. They tried to spice it up to look nicer over a base model, if I had to guess. Super common back then.
