Well,
After begging for 5 years, I finally own an Alaskan Postal CJ8 RHD that a guy has owned locally.

He was stationed in Alaska in the military and towed this back behind a U-Haul and drove it for a few years bone stock before the tranny went out in it.

It is a very nice Jeep. It will need cosmetic restoration of the Tub, but most of the sheet metal is in pretty decent shape.

My goal with this is simple... make a real nice, daily driveable a 80 MPH on the highway, off road capable (read at least 1 selectable locker) CJ8 Scrambler. The wrong side drive and the world top only add to the "cool factor"

I'll post pictures as soon as I get them off my camera.

Welcome to the site Aaron!

I'm originally from the Johnstown area, not far from you. Can't wait to see pics of your postal, sounds nice!

Welcome to the site, and WE NEED PICTURES!! :)

welcome

Welcome, I also just got m postal, but wont be able to work on it for 7 months, please post alot of pictures.

OK,

First set of questions

How many of the 250 of these were 258 6 cyl. One guy told me only 40 or so? Is that true?

Opinions of a 4.0 late model Swap? Including a 42RLE OD auto? Or put a 3500 or AX15 in it 5 speed in?
If indeed the engine block in this is origional, am I wrecking historical value by swapping to a late model Jeep engine? Not that I'm trying to have one of these with mail stripes on it or anything? but I could do the MOPAR FI retro-fit kit. What I thought that I would do is pick up a wrecked but running, low mileage automatic Wrangler X, for $3000, part out the entire Jeep except the engine/wiring/tranny/seats/and gas tank, and try to come out of this with extra $$$ in my pocket instead of $1000 for 258 refurb, and $2000 for MOPAR FI, and I still dont have a manifold, tranny, or new wiring under the hood?
Opinions?? Plus if I'm going to drive this in the summer I want AIR CONDITIONING!!

Man I got so many questions...

Where do I get a drivers side WORLD TOP glass?? I want to install just one, to eliminate that blind spot? Can I get privacy glass for it and the rear window?? I hate window TINT. Is the rear window just a flat plate like the windshield or is it a special window??

What exterior side skins should I purchase? I have an OMIX-ADA account so I could get the ones they make/sell. Are the complete? with folds on the back end so as to tie them into the corner in a factory like pinchweld way?

Did Postal AK 8's have a bulkhead in them? This one does not... but I actually might like to have one, with a verticle divider piece attached to it, behind the drivers seat (to create a more vanlike storage/cargo area) I see where some pple make some real nice fiberglass ones... Opinions??
This one has an angle iron bracket holding a mashed up sliding tray mechanism (for the mail bins??)

What rear end options came in 1984 Scramblers?? AMC 20's?? D44's?? Front D30's? Front D44's? What came in the AK Postal models as far as 4cyl? 6cyl? What gear ratio do I have in mine?? 258 Auto?

Who has put a YJ windshield frame on thiers? How well does this fit? Issues? Anything else?

I dont think that I will be indulging and any chrome/stainless products for this project, except that stainless provides some corrosion resistance for hinges etc. Rather I'm thinking about this color scheme, off white (not quote desert sand color but whiter) with an electric lime green accent of some kind (pinstripe?) and charcoal grey wheels/bumpers/rocker guards/ etc. I'm a huge ARB BULL BAR fan, and might take a look at modification of the $450 bar that Quadratec is selling right now to fit the front of this and look like it belongs on a CJ.

Finally I will be after fresh suspension to make this ride as good as a leaf spring setup can run. If money was not a limiting factor I'd get a TDK frame set up for TJ long arm suspension up front and go buy a wrecked automatic LJ Rubicon and swap over everything, with an RE long arm Coil Front, but that is fantasy land unless I find a new job some time soon making $75k or more. I'd love to have an aluminum tub too but that is not in the budget either.

OK last thing...
Any late model RHD TJ parts good to use on these things?? What about pre Airbag RHD XJ parts??

Damn this is exciting!!

First set of questions

As far as I know, all of them were 258's. I've never seen one with anything else.

BigWalton's your man on the 4.0 swap, he just did one.

If indeed the engine block in this is origional, am I wrecking historical value by swapping to a late model Jeep engine? Not that I'm trying to have one of these with mail stripes on it or anything? but I could do the MOPAR FI retro-fit kit. IMO, no historical value will be lost. It isn't like these are high-priced collector items.

Man I got so many questions...

Where do I get a drivers side WORLD TOP glass?? I want to install just one, to eliminate that blind spot? Can I get privacy glass for it and the rear window?? I hate window TINT. Is the rear window just a flat plate like the windshield or is it a special window??
Do you mean the door window or the side panel? Door windows you're pretty much out of luck unless you can find a used one. Both the side windows and rear door window are curved glass. A flat piece of glass can be made to fit in the side panels, I can show you how. Rear door window must be curved.

What exterior side skins should I purchase? I have an OMIX-ADA account so I could get the ones they make/sell. Are the complete? with folds on the back end so as to tie them into the corner in a factory like pinchweld way?
The tub is a Scrambler tub, so any Scrambler side panels will work, someone on here probably has a recommendation.

Did Postal AK 8's have a bulkhead in them? This one does not... but I actually might like to have one, with a verticle divider piece attached to it, behind the drivers seat (to create a more vanlike storage/cargo area) I see where some pple make some real nice fiberglass ones... Opinions??

No bulkheads in the Alaskan Postals. Tray bracket is stock USPS.

What rear end options came in 1984 Scramblers?? AMC 20's?? D44's?? Front D30's? Front D44's? What came in the AK Postal models as far as 4cyl? 6cyl? What gear ratio do I have in mine?? 258 Auto?
Anything that will fit an 82-86 CJ-7 can be used under the Postal. Not sure what the stock ratio was, BigWalton would know.

Who has put a YJ windshield frame on thiers? How well does this fit? Issues? Anything else?
Two issues with putting a YJ windshield frame on a CJ tub - the YJ windshield frame does not have the defroeter holes in the bottom of the frame where it meets the cowl, and it does not have the defroster outlet holes at the bottom of the window glass. Also the hold-down bolt holes on the inside don't line up. Better off picking up a proper CJ windshield frame.

...

OK last thing...
Any late model RHD TJ parts good to use on these things?? What about pre Airbag RHD XJ parts??
I don't think any TJ parts are compatible without modifiction/fabrication.

Jeff

As far as I know, all of them were 258's. I've never seen one with anything else.
The one in the postal museum exhibit had a 4cyl in it if I remember right when I saw it??
BigWalton's your man on the 4.0 swap, he just did one.
Late model setup with 42RLE?? or 3500 or AX15?? How does it work with D300?? Anything special needed?
IMO, no historical value will be lost. It isn't like these are high-priced collector items.
When I get finished, I'd like to own a Jeep that has a value in the $10,000 - $15,000 range.
Is the RHD thing a killer? Cause I can buy a new tub and switch to LHD pretty Easy... but then the Novelty of my child in the car seat when the officer rolls up to the left side after a ticket is gone.
Do you mean the door window or the side panel? Door windows you're pretty much out of luck unless you can find a used one. Both the side windows and rear door window are curved glass. A flat piece of glass can be made to fit in the side panels, I can show you how. Rear door window must be curved.
Door glass not avaliable in Austrailia? Actual Side Glass not Avaliable in Austrailia? I'm going to put a window in this top... I'd like it to be a factory world top window if they are avalaible. Thanks for the help and offers for help too!!
The tub is a Scrambler tub, so any Scrambler side panels will work, someone on here probably has a recommendation.
There is just so much incomplete junk out there. I have done 2 CJ restos and the one set of side panels were junk, the other set was OK, but was not very smooth when finished.
No bulkheads in the Alaskan Postals. Tray bracket is stock USPS.
OK good to know. Any value to the Tray bracket?? I'll be removing it and putting in a fiberglass bulkhead with a verticle addition to it behind the drivers seat.
I don't think any TJ parts are compatible without modifiction/fabrication.
I was thinking late model RHD Steering Box?? as a New Replacement Option?

Thanks for all the info...

With the difficulty I've heard with replacing those steering boxes. just pull your's and send it to PSC. They'll rebuild it, it'll be like new for a lot less bucks.

First thing, welcome! I was excited when I saw your registration

Second thing: PICS! Pics, pics, pics, more pics, and then some pics ;)

Third thing: Pics :)

Fourth thing, take some time, spend some time on here, read up. Tons of info on pretty much all of the "general" questions you're asking. Way more opinions already here than you'll get in this one thread.

Fifth thing, my take on these questions. Some good info already posted.

How many of the 250 of these were 258 6 cyl. One guy told me only 40 or so? Is that true?

All of them were I-6. They were identical from Jeep, the USPS made some changes to them and the actual operators did more. Does yours have solid foam on the sides or has the top/foam been removed already? Apparently it was the USPS that sprayed the foam after they got to AK. 4 cyl Scramblers are notoriously underpowered, load them up with the full metal top/doors and they would have barely moved I bet.

Opinions of a 4.0 late model Swap? Including a 42RLE OD auto? Or put a 3500 or AX15 in it 5 speed in?

One word: awesome! If you're at all comfortable with wiring diagrams and electrical work, it's a great swap. I used the AW4 that came with the engine straight from the XJ. Stout tranny with a great reputation. www.cjoffroad.com has a forum with almost more info than you can read on the swap and I have a thread here about mine.

Mine will do 80-85 at 2k RPM with 35s and 4.56 gears. I was doing 80 tonight in my stock Rubicon LJ and it had to turn 3k RPM, just for comparison.

IMHO, an engine upgrade can do nothing but help. I didn't try to keep the AC, no idea what would be involved there. Way more trouble than I'd go through. I don't run the hardtop up here though, no top/soft top in summer and it's parked for the salt/winter.

Don't forget to factor exhaust into your budget. The stock stuff behind the manifold is next to useless. I ended up with all new from the manifold to the tailpipe and it cost almost as much as the engine/tranny.

Again, check the cjoffroad.com 4.0 swap forum for all kinds of info.

Last thing on this. I always tell folks to forget about the "value" of these things unless you're going to do a detailed restoration to completely stock and do it all right. If you modify it in pretty much any way and "collectible value" goes out the window and it's just an old Jeep. Just enjoy it!

Where do I get a drivers side WORLD TOP glass?? I want to install just one, to eliminate that blind spot? Can I get privacy glass for it and the rear window?? I hate window TINT. Is the rear window just a flat plate like the windshield or is it a special window??

Jeff got you the good info.

What exterior side skins should I purchase? I have an OMIX-ADA account so I could get the ones they make/sell. Are the complete? with folds on the back end so as to tie them into the corner in a factory like pinchweld way?

Ditto Jeff's comments.

There was a little flat divider thing to mount a postal tray on, but no bulkhead. Any bulkhead you can find should work if you get the foam out of the way I would think.

What rear end options came in 1984 Scramblers?? AMC 20's?? D44's?? Front D30's? Front D44's? What came in the AK Postal models as far as 4cyl? 6cyl? What gear ratio do I have in mine?? 258 Auto?

All of these were AMC20, 2.73 with the trac-loc limited slip (that's important, as I found out, if you want to try to get a lunchbox locker of some type in the rear, the carrier won't work for those). They all had the TF999 3-speed auto and 258.

The trac loc is nothing to get excited about, it apparently only worked so-so when new and now that they're old, they're basically useless for anything other than ruining your day if you go in to install a lunchbox locker without knowing it's there (again, speaking from experience).

Who has put a YJ windshield frame on thiers? How well does this fit? Issues? Anything else?

See Jeff's comment

I dont think that I will be indulging and any chrome/stainless products for this project, except that stainless provides some corrosion resistance for hinges etc. Rather I'm thinking about this color scheme, off white (not quote desert sand color but whiter) with an electric lime green accent of some kind (pinstripe?) and charcoal grey wheels/bumpers/rocker guards/ etc. I'm a huge ARB BULL BAR fan, and might take a look at modification of the $450 bar that Quadratec is selling right now to fit the front of this and look like it belongs on a CJ.

Interesting, can't wait for the PICS!!! :D

I love my Rubicon Express 4.5" lift. Would like to drop down to a 2" and make body mods to fit my 35s for a lower stance, but doubt that I'll get into that because everything works so well right now.

OK last thing...
Any late model RHD TJ parts good to use on these things?? What about pre Airbag RHD XJ parts??

Anything can be made to work with enough time/money, but nothing easy.

Damn this is exciting!!

Ain't it though????

Is the RHD thing a killer? Cause I can buy a new tub and switch to LHD pretty Easy... but then the Novelty of my child in the car seat when the officer rolls up to the left side after a ticket is gone.

To be frank, you have a LOT of work in front of you IMHO if you want it to be worth that kind of money. I'll just suggest you go to ebay and search for completed auctions on Scramblers. eBay is notoriously overpriced for Jeeps/Scramblers and look at what it would take to get into that realm.

Like I said, unless you do a great stock restore, the RHD thing hurts the value, but the hard top and doors is what helps, probably more than the RHD hurts.

Door glass not avaliable in Austrailia? Actual Side Glass not Avaliable in Austrailia? I'm going to put a window in this top... I'd like it to be a factory world top window if they are avalaible.

I wouldn't hold my breath on that. Shipping from OZ would be killer if you could find it and get it here in one piece. Just get Jeff's take on getting glass made. It's not an Overlander (rear door swings the wrong way) so you can't truly build an Overlander replica anyway, so the fact that it's stock glass won't really matter in any way.

OK good to know. Any value to the Tray bracket?? I'll be removing it and putting in a fiberglass bulkhead with a verticle addition to it behind the drivers seat.

You'd have to find someone trying to do a restore, this is the place though...

I was thinking late model RHD Steering Box?? as a New Replacement Option?

John's suggestion is what I was going to do when I get to mine. Again, you can get anything to fit, but it just seems like more trouble than shooting the box off to AGR. I called them and asked about any issues with the RHD and they said it was no problem at all. I would suggest beefing up the steering box with a brace or HD box mount. I got a brace used and cut/rewelded it to fit the RHD and I got a MORE HD box mount unwelded and put it together mirrored to fit. Thread on that on here somewhere too...

First thing, welcome! I was excited when I saw your registration

Thanks and some others on here have already helped me through E-mail. Thanks for everything.
Fourth thing, take some time, spend some time on here, read up. Tons of info on pretty much all of the "general" questions you're asking. Way more opinions already here than you'll get in this one thread.

I've been reading!! and reading!! and reading!! and reading!!
Does yours have solid foam on the sides or has the top/foam been removed already?
All Foam is perfectly intact. I'll be removing it as part of the refinishing job, and will probably replace it with an upholstered interior up top, and I owned 3 spray on liner franchises and still own an application piece of equipment.

If I install a 4.0 weather from an XJ or a TJ, I will be using absoloutly everything, including the front clip wiring harness, dash wiring harness, and might even go as far as looking into assembly of YJ column into the thing. I'll splice together all gauges, and speedo is mechanical.
I've pulled several dozen of these motors from the Salvage that I've bought and parted out over the years. I've also done an install or two of a 4.0 and done a 258 install in an early YJ as well. AW4 vs 42RLE I need to read up on mods needed to the rest of the driveline as far as mounting and distance etc.

Mine will do 80-85 at 2k RPM with 35s and 4.56 gears. I was doing 80 tonight in my stock Rubicon LJ and it had to turn 3k RPM, just for comparison.

Rest of my fleet includes a
1987 LWB MJ (60,000 miles, 4.0 AW4, 355's, 8.8, 2" AAL/Coil lift, 31x10.50's on Gamblers)
1996 XJ4 Sport (100,000 miles, 4.0, AX15, 355's, 1" Shackle, 1" Spacer, 235x16's on Icons)
2005 LJ Rubi (30,000 miles, 6 speed, Kilby OBA, OME 2" lift)
2008 JK4 Rubi (30,000 miles, 6 speed, ARB OBA, Rough Country 2")
All vehicles have ARB Bull Bars (including rear bar on JK) and Winches.
1995 XJ4 Sport (150,000miles, Stock, Huge Rust Bucket, Bad Engine Knock from PO Neglect, Meyer Plow, Retreads, Welded 8.25, Lots of Soffit and Facia and Zip screws)

I previously put 400,000 on a 1989 MJ and 313,000 on a 1995 XJ. It is sad how much emissions and smog clogging took place on the 4.0. My old 1995 XJ ran circles around my LJ Rubi when it was new... and the XJ had 300,000 on it. Both had 4.10's and 265x16's. I'd love to figure out how to open up my 2005 to produce some more horsepower.

IMHO, an engine upgrade can do nothing but help. I didn't try to keep the AC, no idea what would be involved there. Way more trouble than I'd go through. I don't run the hardtop up here though, no top/soft top in summer and it's parked for the salt/winter.

I never saw that CJoffroad.com site before thanks for the great info. As for exhaust, I'll be putting in a Banks Tube if I put in a 4.0 and I will be putting in custom bent exhaust as well. Exhaust is going to need replaced anyhow.
Last thing on this. I always tell folks to forget about the "value" of these things unless you're going to do a detailed restoration to completely stock and do it all right. If you modify it in pretty much any way and "collectible value" goes out the window and it's just an old Jeep. Just enjoy it!
Your Jeep is great. I read most of your thread on your build etc. I may wind up with Gen Right or Rokmen Armor on mine. But I'm shooting for a little different completion point that what you did. I'm looking for something that is refined/refinished/rebuilt a tad bit more than you did with yours. Don't take that the wrong way your rig is awesome, my own personal preference and eventual use is a little bit different.
All of these were AMC20, 2.73 with the trac-loc limited slip (that's important, as I found out, if you want to try to get a lunchbox locker of some type in the rear, the carrier won't work for those). They all had the TF999 3-speed auto and 258.

Thanks for answering redundant q's with great info like above.... Really 2.73?? Not 3.73?? That sucks!! Is the AMC 20 stronger than a D44??

Thanks a bunch for all the help...

Thinking about an off white (cream color) with charcoal grey armor/hinges/bumpers/ and a dab of gloss black and electric lime green (2005 color) for accent. Intentions are to do painted on stripes.

Target date for completion of this is going to be 2012 or 2013...

So you guys are going to have to be patient with me.

I'm going to strip all the way down the the frame... media blast everything and POR15 paint all frame parts etc.... but I'm going to tinker with getting it running and driveable first during this winter. I'd like to cat around in it bone stock next summer to really get a feel for what I want to do... Give my wife some time to sign me up for OverHaulin too (just kidding)

All Foam is perfectly intact. I'll be removing it as part of the refinishing job, and will probably replace it with an upholstered interior up top, and I owned 3 spray on liner franchises and still own an application piece of equipment.

Sweet! I really can't wait to see this specimen! :D

There's installs on the cjoffroad site where people used the donor column, you can keep cruise control that way.

Heh, much any refinement/refurbishment/rebuilding will be WAY more than I did :rotfl: No worries at all, that's exactly my point... do whatever you want with yours and just enjoy the heck out of it!

Really 2.73?? Not 3.73?? That sucks!! Is the AMC 20 stronger than a D44??

Yep, 2.73 (assuming it's stock). Yes, it does suck.

The CJ AMC20's biggest issue is the two-piece axleshafts which can strip out in a heartbeat. Then the tubes are not thick and can bend or spin out of the center section. The gears are actually bigger/stronger than a 44, but it's usually considered inferior overall. Sane tires and one-pieces can handle reasonably well, much more than that and you push it.

So what axle options do I have??

I'm assuming this is a 60"WMS like YJ/XJ/MJ/TJ/ZJ/WJ Axles, but with the 5 on 5 pattern?

A set of JK Axles from Mopar performance for $2500 total might be a good idea??

Were there any D44's in any CJ's that could be swapped into this to get rid of the AMC20 rear?

If you really wanted to make it an Overlander, I've got a spare Overlander rear door that swings the correct way :)

Here's the info you need for putting windows in the side panels.

The upper left photo shows what the panel looks like when the foam is removed. You can see the inner skin has a location for cutting out the window. You can also see that there's a reinforcing bar across the window that needs to be cut out.

Upper right, I've cut out the window opening and the reinforcing bar.

Lower left, I've used a piece of the reinforcing bar to patch the inside panel where I had to cut out the bar. Luckily it's the same shape. The patch gets welded in place.

The inner and outer skin are not joined together around the window frame, that was done for heat expansion reasons. And that's good news, because the side of the panel is slightly curved, which would require curved glass. What I did is shown in the bottom right - I clamped a piece of wood to the window opening and bonded the inner and outer skins together at the frame with automotive structural adhesive. The end result was a slight flattening of the frame so the side panel would accept flat glass.

And, if you want to replicate the Overlander's flip-out side windows, pick up some FJ40 parts. I didn't know this until a few weeks ago when I acquired an FJ40 hardtop, but the FJ rear flip out windows are the right size to fit in the Postal window openings. With only a small bit of fabrication on the window frame in the side panel, they could be made to fit. Had I known this 5 years ago I would have put them in mine.

Alright guys today is the big day.

If everything goes well this should be sitting in my drive way by lunch time today.

In the spirit of the thick foam insulation for the AK Postman, I just wont be able to resist tinkering with it and cleaning it out today when it gets here.

...of course you'll also be busy taking and posting pictures, right??? ;)

Enjoy your first day with it! :D

OK...

Finally got the tow truck there today to pick it up.

I got a few snap shots of it on my phone... forgot to put a memory stick in my camera last week when I took all the other photos, so they really dont exist.

I'll take lots more asap and post them up.

I'm kinda a photo whore so I will take as many as possible and post them for your enjoyment.

When the Jeep was on the roll back today I could not help but notice how damn good the frame is on this Jeep. A media blast job, some POR15, and some Chassi Coat black and it will be like new.

In addition to that, I did pull up some of the floor covering (not sure if that is factory or not) and there is one small hole (big enough for a baseball to fall through) on the drivers side (yes on the right side). The right side of the body is in 10 times worse shape than the left. The left is only bad around the wheel well opening. The drivers side has several holes in the rockers, but I'm hopefull that I will be able to do the 2 piece skin replacement job and make the tub not just serviceable, but actually worth saving.

I just absoloutly can't wait to get this running so that I can putter around in it.

The first thing I will be doing is a thorough clean out and typical work on a neglected unrun engine (carb/plugs/wires/belts/hoses/flush/fill/nutter bypass etc.) to get the 258 running.

After that I have not got a clue... maby I'll put my backpacking mattress in it and sleep in it over night (wife might be making me anyhow as she was not a fan of me buying this).

I promise I will post pics this weekend.
