I'e been meaning to start a thread about my jeep for a while - but time has not permitted. I actually own 2 1981 Scramblers now and there is a funny story as to how I came by the second one.
A friend of mine owns a shop here in Burnet, Tx (near where I live). Stan's shop always has a lot of hunting jeeps parked around it because the typically all the deer lease hunters in our area show up each fall and of course their jeeps won't start because they have been sitting around for the whole Spring and Summer months. Anyway, this guy stopped in one day and asked Stan if he knew anyone that might be interested in a 81 scrambler as a parts vehicle. He thought of me and told the guy that he would have me call. I did, but the guy was not sure how much he wanted and was not sure he even wanted to get rid of it. I gave him my email and told me to send me some pics and a price when he got all that figured out.
Fast forward about a year and I was cleaning off my desk and I found the guys number on a scrap of paper so I gave him a call since I had never gotten the email. When we spoke he advised that he had not sold the jeep yet and needed to "real bad". He informed me he wanted $1000.00 (so right away I figured it was crap). He sent me some pictures and it looked ok - until I got to the part where there was no engine under the hood. Still for a grand I thought I would give it a look. Sure enough - it was in much better shape than the one I already owned. I ended up buying it, a CJ7 top and a set of new leaf springs that he had for 1300 bucks. I sold the CJ7 top, the full Acme scrambler top and the doors for $1800.00
The missing motor was a 305 throttle body motor, so I went to the junk yard to get another one and my buddy there talked me into putting a 5.3L vortec engine in instead. I got a 2005 tahoe motor with 63,000 miles on it and all the necessary parts to make it work. Well not quite - a couple of grand later I am set up though - thanks to Advanced Adaptors and several other little pieces. Presently I am having Keith Jones at Jones Jeep in Marble Falls Tx. put in my engine. Keith is awesome. I have been going by there for a year or so asking questions and he has been very patient. I always left there not actually purchasing anything, but wishing I could pay him back for being so generous with his time. Well I am finally getting to patronize him and so far I couldn't be happier.
Since it took me so long to decide if I was going to go with the 5.3L or the straight 258 Jeep motor or back in with the 305 TBI I had plenty of time to be doing body work, bushing replacements etc. along the way. It had a NV4500 transmission so I am sticking with that - should be fun. Found me some half doors and a half top off CL and things are moving along
