81 Scrambler "parts Jeep"

I'e been meaning to start a thread about my jeep for a while - but time has not permitted. I actually own 2 1981 Scramblers now and there is a funny story as to how I came by the second one.

A friend of mine owns a shop here in Burnet, Tx (near where I live). Stan's shop always has a lot of hunting jeeps parked around it because the typically all the deer lease hunters in our area show up each fall and of course their jeeps won't start because they have been sitting around for the whole Spring and Summer months. Anyway, this guy stopped in one day and asked Stan if he knew anyone that might be interested in a 81 scrambler as a parts vehicle. He thought of me and told the guy that he would have me call. I did, but the guy was not sure how much he wanted and was not sure he even wanted to get rid of it. I gave him my email and told me to send me some pics and a price when he got all that figured out.

Fast forward about a year and I was cleaning off my desk and I found the guys number on a scrap of paper so I gave him a call since I had never gotten the email. When we spoke he advised that he had not sold the jeep yet and needed to "real bad". He informed me he wanted $1000.00 (so right away I figured it was crap:confused:). He sent me some pictures and it looked ok - until I got to the part where there was no engine under the hood. Still for a grand I thought I would give it a look. Sure enough - it was in much better shape than the one I already owned. I ended up buying it, a CJ7 top and a set of new leaf springs that he had for 1300 bucks. I sold the CJ7 top, the full Acme scrambler top and the doors for $1800.00 :bacon:

The missing motor was a 305 throttle body motor, so I went to the junk yard to get another one and my buddy there talked me into putting a 5.3L vortec engine in instead. I got a 2005 tahoe motor with 63,000 miles on it and all the necessary parts to make it work. Well not quite - a couple of grand later I am set up though - thanks to Advanced Adaptors and several other little pieces. Presently I am having Keith Jones at Jones Jeep in Marble Falls Tx. put in my engine. Keith is awesome. I have been going by there for a year or so asking questions and he has been very patient. I always left there not actually purchasing anything, but wishing I could pay him back for being so generous with his time. Well I am finally getting to patronize him and so far I couldn't be happier.

Since it took me so long to decide if I was going to go with the 5.3L or the straight 258 Jeep motor or back in with the 305 TBI I had plenty of time to be doing body work, bushing replacements etc. along the way. It had a NV4500 transmission so I am sticking with that - should be fun. Found me some half doors and a half top off CL and things are moving along

even got my wife to pose with the new motor - her eyes automatically roll if you say the word "JEEP" or "scrambler" - it's really cute unless of course they get stuck that way someday......

Actually after looking at ExhaustDemon's build for the last hour or so I am warming up to the green Idea - It is awesome! I think we are going to work on the "old" scrambler when we finish the "new" one. We may go green on that one:thumbsup:

Xazillion on keeping the original paint/stripes. You can't pay to get that awesome patina once you do away with it! My 77 Cherokee project is a "patina project" for just that reason, they're only original once

Regardless, I'm  on this.

I sort of comprimised on the paint. I did some body repair so I was stuck with a bunch of primer spots. I couldn't match the paint perfectly so I masked the stripes and "SCRAMBLER" lettering and repainted/touched up. It's not perfect and looks awesome from 100 yards away:shrug:

Hope I didn't screw things up, mostly I just wantewd to stop the rust and preserve the body.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that at all, preserve it and do what you can. I'm doing exactly the same thing on the Cherokee, so it'll have touch up spots too. The hood and cowl on mine came spray painted already. I'm thinking I'll try to see if I can get down through the spray paint to at least show some original paint, or I'll find other original paint silver parts to swap on.

Obviously it's your rig, but seems like there are a lot of folks that get an old Jeep, assume it needs paint, and then later regret that they did it once they see how people look at original paint rigs. So we just want to throw out the idea.

I need to do some major frame repair or replaacement on my other Scrambler - think once this one is complete we will tear it down and do some extreme stuff to it. It will need repainting. As far as I can tell it never had any stripes and was rode hard and put up wet a lot. It's my daily driver currently but will be retired to the ranch as a hunting rig when the new one is operational.

Here's the most recent photo of my project although I have not seen it in a few days.

Well they got the V8 crammed in there - was tougher than he thought - I want to use the stock exhaust manifold and he was trying to leave the maximum amout of space possible. Still Wiring to do, fuel lines and fuel pump........

it sort of looks like of of those way cool Rock Crawlers that the young chaps are sporting these days:headbang:

I might be willing to take you up on that - I'm afraid I might need a wheelie bar

Looks great. I don't know if you're past this point already, but LS 'Vette manifolds make running the exhaust easy.

Ihave read that, but I think he got it where it will work - the vette manifolds are "plan B" if necessary:)

Didn't I see that old camaro manifolds will work as well - I have a buddy that owns a junkyard - have not seen any vcorvettes laying around there :fingerscrossed:

Seems like the passenger side is no problem - gonna be tight on the drivers side - could you just use the one side? Guess I might as well get both.............

A lot more room - I bet the vette manifolds would have been even better. These should work great though - price was right. I tried some GTO manifolds - but they hit the motor mounts - they dipped too low in the front. Super nice guy in Austin let me bring them back (I even offered to pay him a restocking fee - no go - pretty nice for Craigslist purchase). 2nd pic is Keith Jones finishing up wiring.
