Another Scrambler Purchase/Road Trip - UPDATE- BODY ON FRAME AGAIN

Heading back home, all downhill.

Crossing into Indiana from Michigan.

God forsaken Nashville traffic, probably 30 miles north of the city on a Sunday afternoon, I65.

Crossing into Alabama from Tennessee.

Stopped for the night south of Montgomery, Alabama. Probably could have made it home in one shot but I was getting tired.

Next day, still on I65, north of Mobile, AL.

Wow, awesome photo dump…thanks for sharing!

Also, big congrats on the 100k mile mark. So cool to see a frame off get used and maintained the way you have done with this one. 🙌

Had a slight gear oil leak from the speedometer drive gear area on the Dana 300. Ordered this little kit the other day:

20250920_091231.jpg

20250920_091233.jpg

NOTE - the larger o-ring was way too big for my Dana 300.

The associated parts:

20250920_091240.jpg

I'm running a 33 tooth gear, matches up pretty good with 4.10 gears and 33" BFG tires (actually measure 31.5" tall IIRC).

20250920_091248.jpg

I used a small socket to gently push in the seal, then the retaining clip. There was no groove in my housing for this clip, and I did have a clip in there before. Not much force on this clip so I reckon just the friction between the housing bore and the clip is enough to keep the seal in place.

20250920_092251.jpg

20250920_092307.jpg

And reinstalled. I have a vehicle speed sensor piggy backed on to the back of the speedometer gear housing for the Mopar MPI fuel injection kit.

20250920_093359.jpg

The biggest reason why my Dana 300 leaks a bit:

20250920_093807.jpg

Just removing the speedometer gear housing from the Dana 300, Jeep sitting flat and level, this much gear oil ran out, almost a quart!

Not the best picture but my Dana 300 is clocked, not all the way flat, 15 degrees IIRC.

20250920_093418.jpg

I always feel guilty just putting 2 quarts in it so I usually over fill it until fluid comes out the fill plug, like a stock angled Dana 300. Should have listened to @Bad Karma and installed a site tube. Oh well...

That being said, even running 3 quarts of gear oil in the Dana 300 the only real leak I have is from the rear end of the intermediate shaft. Just a minor drip/always damp. Even stock angle and lube quantity would still drip a bit.

That's it for now!

I'm not sure if I have ever actually seen a Dana 300 NOT leak.
My buddy and I both bought new 84 CJ7s and they both leaked from the start. He took his in for something else and that leak. He didn’t have much luck at the dealership and I didn’t even bother myself after that.

Dana 300 rear output shaft seal started to drip a few weeks back, finally got around to installing a new seal.

For some reason, when I originally installed this seal, I installed it as deep as it would go into the housing.

20251006_114529.jpg

The part number for the seal I used. This Dana 300 yoke is for a CV driveshaft, hence the through holes in the yoke.

20251006_125737.jpg

NAPA lists another part numbers as the correct seal, the seal I used cross references with a National oil seal part number. The correct NAPA part number seal costs $10 more than the one I used. All dimensions and specifications are the same, according to SKF.

Close up of the yoke sealing surface. No grooves, some marks. Note the raised sealing area at the top of the picture that has the dark ring. This is where the seal will ride when I install the seal flush to the outer face of the rear output shaft housing.

20251006_125754.jpg

Seal and yoke installed.

20251006_145909.jpg

Looking at the above picture of the yoke, the seal looks like it will be riding on a not super polished part of the sealing surface. Will have to keep and eye on this. I did buy two seals. Maybe this is why I had the other seal installed all the way into the output shaft housing?

Back together, will have to drive it a bit and check for leaks.

20251006_145917.jpg

Only put two quarts of gear oil in the Dana 300, the recommended amount.

Drove the Jeep about 10 minutes this morning, my hunch about the seal position was correct, leaking.

20251007_090015.jpg

20251007_090022.jpg

Yoke removed, you can see where the seal was riding on the dust shield area of the yoke.

20251007_091334.jpg

20251007_091342.jpg

If you look closely at the black part of the seal, below the "skf 15655", you will see a line/cut/indentation in the rubber.

Another issue: the seal I installed was a single lip. I installed the correct double lip seal this time.

20251007_094727.jpg

You can see the inner ridge machined into the rear output shaft housing. I installed the new seal until it contacted this ridge.

20251007_095608.jpg

20251007_100531.jpg

Went back and revisited my yoke, no real indentation, but in for a penny and all that jazz.....

20251007_101100.jpg

About two hours with various grades of emery cloth, sand paper, and finally some metal polish, all smooth and shiny and slick like new.

20251007_115259.jpg

I need to pick up another one of these Dana 300 CV yokes as a spare. I have spare yokes for rhe Dana 30/front output shaft and the AMC 20. Good parts to keep on hand. Most of the time, if one of these seals is leaking the yoke will need to be repaired or replaced.

Um, squirrel 🤣

Moving along........

Yoke installed, everything back together, one hour test drive, no leaks, going to call this good to go.

20251007_124012.jpg

If it was easy to install the seal with the output shaft in place, ideally I would have loved to put this seal midway between the inner ridge/seal stop and the outer face of the output shaft housing. But, no leaks now, no leaks for 100k miles, not going to lose any sleep over it.

That's it for now.

I put two seals in with a little weep hole drilled into the inner seal. Inner lets some oil by but doesn't fill up the void between the two seals because of weep hole. It was a bit of a hail mary because no matter what I did, it would leak... been years, not a drop.

Good news, output shaft seal did not leak overnight. Bad news, the speedometer gear housing large o-ring started to leak.

20251008_110346.jpg

Decided to inspect/blow out the Dana 300 vent line, just to be safe. Evidence of it venting some oil out when I was driving it way overfilled.

20251008_110959.jpg

Pulled and cleaned the vent cap, disconnected the hose from the transfer case, blew air and brake parts cleaner through it.

20251008_111512.jpg

20251008_111523.jpg

Also blew out the metal vent tube on the case, it was clear.

Since the transfer case is clocked and I didn't feel like draining the oil out, bottle jack on a 4x4 wood block, tipped the Jeep to its side so oil wouldn't run out the speedometer gear housing hole.

20251008_114900.jpg

I should have changed this seal when I had this apart a few weeks ago. Easy enough.

20251008_135035.jpg

The old o-ring was no longer round, more flat.

20251008_135115.jpg

And how about that, a made in the USA part, and made in my home state!!

No road miles today, in the yard using the Scrambler/winch to put a strain on a dead tree that is next to the house, then chain sawed it down.

20251008_152153.jpg

A few trips around the neighborhood pulling the trailer, will look for a puddle on the garage floor in the morning.

That's it for now.

No puddle on the floor, just the single drop from the intermediate shaft.

20251009_094502.jpg

Not going to try to address this leak at this time. IIRC I reused the OEM shaft, I believe Novak makes a shaft with an o-ring on each end of the shaft. Future project.

Back to yard clearing work!!

Drove up to Hot Springs this past weekend for some four wheeling with the Scrambler people, CJ7 Andy followed me up.

I didn't take any action pictures, too busy driving. We rode trails for three days, hit almost all the 2 and 3 rated trails, all the Jeep Badge trails, had a blast. No carnage for me or Andy. I think a few of his 5 bolt lock in hubs may have backed out maybe a hair, but the Nordlock washers and ARP studs seemed to work great. I know he had a much easier time this go around with the addition of a front locker.

Anyway, great time as usual.
