Anyone keep their jeep stock?

I like modified stock if that is a term. I really like keeping many stock elements but updating items that could or should be better. Make it stock-ish looking and have all the beef below. Mine was a completely trashed so it is an open canvas to me.

I bought mine specifically the way it was, not stock, so that I didn't feel back altering it further.

I suppose I could continue my 351 build and make it appear stock. Maybe pack away the tranny/iron duke till I get other toys.

I have two Scramblers that are "modified", this one is mostly "stock", but not 100% original, if that makes sense.

Posing in the typical Jeep CJ "I'm broke down" stance:

1983 Sherwood Green Jeep Scrambler SR, around 125,000 miles. Mostly stock, not 100% original. I will list not "100% stock/original" in bold below:

Paint job - stock/original color that the Jeep came from the factory wearing, previous owner re-painted it
Tires -close to stock size, but they are actually 30x9.50's, so not 100% stock, but close
Wheels - stock 7" wheels, previous owner painted them to match the hard top/door trim and added chrome trim rings
Suspension - 1" Superlift springs/shocks, polyurethane bushings
Engine - mostly stock, except belts/hoses have been changed out, currently restoring all the computer controlled carb stuff, Team Rush Upgrade installed (Ford cap/rotor/plug wires, MSD coil)
Transmission - stock T5, that needs to be rebuilt, I added a B&M short shifter (love it!!!!)
Transfer case - stock Dana 300, loose front output shaft, needs to be rebuilt
Front axle - all stock from hub to hub, 3.31 gears, wide track, except Lube Locker diff cover gasket
Rear axle - stock wide track 3.31 gear/Trac-Lock LSD, Moser 1-Piece axle shafts
Stock PS/PB and 15 gallon fuel tank

Other "not 100% stock/original" items:

Previous owner installed diamond tread on factory side steps
Previous owner installed chrome door/hood/WS hinges
Previous owner recovered factory seats/door panels
(looks good IMO)
Original owner installed "2 post" cassette deck with under dash mounted EQ (not stock, but "period correct"
Previous Owner repainted doors brown where it is a decal from the factory, repainted hard top (looks good IMO)
Previous owner had the factory decals remade, except the hood decal

I added a "correct" stock rear bumper, and a NOS roll bar spare tire mount.

I am only the third owner of this Scrambler, but the original owner/2nd owner did make some changes. The stereo was installed because the original owner bought the brand new Scrambler for his high school age son to drive. When his son went to college, the Scrambler was parked. The second owner repainted the Scrambler, it needed it.

This was the first Scrambler that I bought. I wanted a "stock" one, this one fits the bill pretty well. While it is not a 100% original survivor, I enjoy it, and I am not too worried about "changes" that I make to it. But, this one will stay like this, just plan on rebuilding the mechanical components as they wear out.

That's my favorite color cj. I like the matching wheels. I thought about that with mine. Still nobody with a 4 banger?

How do you tell what trim level you had? I'm assuming mine was a base model. Had tan colored door panels, tan low back bucket seats, the basic 15x6? Wheels but it has the spare tire carrier. I found a tiny piece of vinyl while sanding around the rocker panel so I think it had stripes.

Anyone actually keep a stock iron duke engine?

Mine is a stock Iron Duke. The truck is a bare bones basic. I have changed over to wagon wheels and larger tires but I have the originals...Mine didnt have a radio so I put in a AMC AM/FM/CB. I removed (and kept) the stock step bumper when I put on a receiver hitch and added the bumperetts. So to look at mine its pretty much a stock 81

What size tires did you go with? Did you have 373s or the 410s? Mine has a radio, power steering, and power brakes.

Nothing wrong with replacing that SR4! Still will look "stock" I also like the wheel spacers idea the a member did on here on his all stock 81, or even a wide track swap on narrow track 81s. It's your canvas. Do what you want. It's not like you tore apart an all original pristine CJ, you can now do anything with it :bacon:

I never imagined the t176 came with the 4cyl until I had one. It was a 1983.

That was the first thing I did was swap out that puny SR4, it was a good thing that the 3rd to 4th gear syncro was going because it gave me all the excuse I need to drop in a more convenient, albeit weak T5 tranny. I also put spacers on mine, 1.5" up front and 2" in the back (not sure) but I ended up with the same wheel to wheel spacing with a WT axle. Just need to figure out how to modify the front caps to fit over the hubs.

Here's the stance now with the spacers, again this is an '81 narrow tracked vehcile

This is how she sits today, all parts used have been original (not to this Jeep but original nonetheless). I have a heap of things to install when I get to AZ next week, can't wait. The only thing that won't be Jeep original is the carpet kit, but I can live with that!

Notice that I was not able to fit the caps on the front wheel after putting the adapters on.. gotta think through that one.

Good luck and have fun!

What color was the iron duke originally? Mine is hugger orange along with the trans. I'm pretty sure that's not how it came.

Same issue with spacers on my '81 narrow trac. I plan to take my caps (I have a few spare ones to test out different options) to a local machine/fabrication shop to see if they can make some super clean cuts just enough for the caps to fit over the hubs from being offset by the spacers. I hope to get it done in the next couple of months and will let you know how they turn out. Let me know if you figure out anything in the meantime.

I was browsing more suitable tire sizes for a stock ish 2.5 and came across the nankang mudstar tires. They have the prefect look for a classic cj. Sure they're cheap and won't last as long as high quality tires but I won't be putting 30k a year like I do on my ranger.

Was there a build sheet hidden anywhere on these jeeps? I'm still having a hard time finding what original is on this damn thing. Of course factory original and dealer original may be different. I was noticing chrome flecks under the orange paint on my grille and took some stripper to it. I guess I have a factory chrome grille, black mirrors, radio, vinyl decals but which are unknown, a spare tire carrier, factory half hard top, no fender flares, power steering and brakes, Olympic white paint, tan low back seats, tan dash pad, tan grab handle, no carpet and maybe a tan hard top. Seems like I have the mulatto bastard child of a base and a laredo..oh but black seat belts?

I plan to keep mine stock. I have to add all the bolt on items back on..mirrors, rocker trim, tire carrier

Also gonna put factory graphics back on, and hope to find a nutmeg half soft top and soft doors, one day a factory white bumper.
