Giving it a Jolt

Well, the deed is done, connection is made. Took a few interesting turns being a one made show with a hoist that could quite make the reach. Next step is engine mount and battery boxes. As you can see in the last picture, I do have an issue with the bracket for the clutch linkage that I need to solve. The adapter covers one of the holes so I'll probably work out a plate that uses one of the original bracket holes plus the bell housing bolt above it.

I dunno- I think it looks pretty cool. That’s what the future looks like. I did think the motor would be physical larger though!

Did we go down the hydraulic clutch path here? wondering if that would help/hurt the mounting (with a slave cylinder).

I think it looks like progress!!

Probably a dumb question but with the size being smaller is there any way to combine it with a gas/diesel engine or generator to create a hybrid solution? Would love electric for around town, ICE for travel. Love the build!

Like a Honda eu2000i generator to recharge battery for long trip. Small, quiet, fuel efficient. Not sure if that would charge them though.

I am curious to see what you plan to do for the mount and to prevent it all from twisting.

Interesting idea. I did a quick search for examples but I have no experience. Does anyone have any suggestions to look at?

That is a good point - could you make a "hoop" that attaches to the frame and goes over the plate but allows the plate to mount to the hoop? that way you'd get a mount point on all sides, even though the real connection is just to the frame. Ha, no idea if that makes a lick of sense. :)

The motor mount is already on the end of the motor, I used it as a connection point for the strap on the hoist. I will move it closer to the bell housing and tie it to the frame rails.

This my first, very rough engine mount mock up. Embarrassed at how poor the wood working is but only had some scrap play wood to work with. It shows the intent to use the ICE engine mount locations as I want to “leave no trace” in case someone wants to go back in the future. Gap between motor bracket and mounting bar would be bridge by bushings.

The strap clamp will not be strong enough to handle the twisting force and the transmission just has that torque bar style mount. I think you might need something a bit more robust coming off the bellhousing adapter.

You would think that, but think about the mechanics a little bit more and you might be surprised. The strap mount is like a band brake around it, and the fins should provide pretty good traction on the rubber/polymer insulators. I think it will harness the torque better than you think as long as the insulators are deadheaded in the direction of applied torque.

I don't disagree with the adapter mount comment though; I would have done the adapter with yoke mounts like a semi-truck setup, personally.

All good feedback. I've spoken with a number of folks and investigated many conversions who use this band mount set-up with great success. That being said, I have thought about adding a bellhousing mount as well.

As long as it works. If this is proven then might as well try it out first.

Started working on the crossmember for the motor mount. Decided to tackle it the right way and am fumbling my way through Fusion 360. Below are drawings of the initial design and 3D printed mock up of the chassis bracket. Starting to get a hang of this software and it has me thinking of all kinds of things I could make. Plan is to get the bracket and crossmember fabricated out of 1/4" aluminum.

Look at the clutch set up for 80-83 CJs with the 4cyl engine. Although it would typically bolt to the same holes, you may be able to grind the gusset off of the slave cylinder, bolt it to the back side of the bell housing, and shorten the push rod.
