SUA - Spring Under Axle
Heh, yeah, I'm well aware of that acronym ;)

What I mean is the commnet, not much support? Seems like there's a ton of support, lots of us think that's the best way to go.

I didn't mean it like that, I just wanted to talk through what you were saying. There's definitely SOA fans on here, but a lot of us are SUA and it's always worth a discussion.

I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't something else we could point out or discuss, I'm never trying to make anyone feel like an idiot! There are no dumb questions, as the saying goes. :D

Thanks BigW, I just should have understood what you were saying.

Anyway, I'm not trying to thread jack but I always thought body lifts were a bad idea cause they raised the center of gravity. However they allow for bigger tires while keeping the frame lower and that would keep the COG lower.

Body lifts of more than 1" are a bad idea. Bigger ones can damage the body and throw lots of things out of wack (technical term there). SUA lifts, like the Rubicon Express 4.5", are a good way to go for most people.

yep, i think though i will be goings SOA with a 2" lift at most. I think i want to run 38"s

not tryin to be a smart a** but aren't all kits bolt on? Just would like some input before I buy a lift kit.

Yeah, but SUA kits put different springs in the same place as stock, you're not adding much anything new other than the springs.

SOA you have to completely relocate where the spring mounts to the axle (the spring perch). This is a VERY heavily stressed/loaded component. In a SUA lift, the spring perch is welded to the axle from the factory and you reuse it. That bolt-on SOA kit is relocating the perch by bolting it onto the axle. That's bad news to me.

This is just spooky too:

I don't know if this changes anything but if you look in the other pictures it keeps the stock spring perch(on the bottom)and bolts all around that. I am just wondering what lift will be the best for a daily driver, my thinking and it could be wrong is my 2000 f-350 has the SOA(stock) and works great. If you don't mind who makes a good high steer kit

Exactly, one bolt comes loose and then what? It also looks very questionable as to side-to-side strength/stiffness to me.

SOA works when done right, but it's not easy or cheap (and definitely not bolt-on IMO). There are definitely stock vehicles set up SOA, but again, that's a well-engineered (welded or cast-in) stock installation with the knowledge of the company's engineering team and tons of testing.

This doesn't and is far from stock. Just try to find any stock vehicle with a drag link that looks like that for instance.

And unless you're buying new knuckles with matching hi-steer arms, there's no high steer "kit" that I know of. Hi steer is definitely what's "right" to handle steering when SOA, but it takes the right knuckles, machining, studs and hi steer arms at a minimum.

All this is just my opinion of course. I'd stick SUA for any setup 35" or smaller and going up from there I'd seriously look into what I could do to cut or get new fenders to make room.

thank you for your knowlegde and imput. I looked at the rubicon express kit and it looks good but expense again thank you for your help
