Mikes 81 mongrel scrambler

I'm going to adjust the wheel wells on the scrambler according to the JKU wheelbase, so it'll be a stretch scrambler, and we have to fab new body mounts on the frame. Overall, it's fairly close. Close enough to make it worth doing anyways! I'm going to take my existing frame, stash it in the bush, and in a year or two, mount an aqualu tub on it, and figure out a diesel set up.

I am impressed with your skills. I am doing a frame swap on my Scrambler now and can't imagine what it would take to put a JKU frame under it. I just picked up a CJ8 frame off of CL. And that is enough work for me.

I can't wait to see both of these.

I'm a welder and a steam/pipe fitter by trade, and a tinkerer by nature! ;) And since I have a frame and suspension that worked so well under the JKU, I want to use it again. Without all the computer nonsense, without the terrible drivetrain, and without all the plastic!! It's going to be a bit of work. I have a 401, a TH400, and a D300 t-case to put in this, I do need to flip the t-case, so it's in driver drop configuration. Gonna be a project for sure! :)

It's a touch wider. We'd taken all the measurements when I picked it up, but I had to leave it a a buddy's an hour out, and I've forgotten how much. I'll post all details Saturday, when I pick it up and strip it down

I know it's not my scrambler, but today hit +10 Celsius, so I peeled the top and doors off. Supposed to do it again tomorrow, so I'm gonna run it to work. At 5:15 in the morning. See the snow still on the street? ;)

:) Looking forward to your "personal touch" on this JKU Scrambler. ..

btw... sorry for your fire story.....:banghead:

Cutting the 8 off the frame. The PO had only 4 bolts in, holding it to the frame. Cause he couldn't get them loose. Sawzall time. She'll be free tomorrow, and we'll be tentatively moving the JK frame under, and mark and fab body mounts.

She's floating!! Took the frame out, got the burnout off the trailer, the 8 frame on the trailer, and started cutting up the JK body. Tell me this, who here hasn't dreamed of cutting a JK into pieces? ;)

I'm keeping the tailgate as is for garage art.

This is getting really interesting....

Oh, for reference, the JK frame is approximately 4-6" wider than the CJ frame, depending on where you pull tape at. I'm down to 8 hours a day at work for the next week, then two weeks off for Christmas holidays, one of which I don't have my kids. So, this JK will be cut up, and the frame slid under, and see what we need for body mounts. Motor mounts will be interesting, as will making sure the grill, fenders and hood all work. I'm not looking to stretch those. I'll be cutting the back quarters. The JKU wheelbase is 116", and the CJ 8 is 103.5". I really don't want to comp cut this beast. I don't like the look, personally, and want this thing as road legal as 40" tires will let me! ;) In Alberta, sometimes we get away with a couple inches of tire outside the flares, sometimes we don't. So if I can keep the tires more or less covered, that's one plus.

I can't wait to see this progress. Especially over the next couple of weeks.

Damn near sacrilege, isn't it? A CJ with a driver drop diff? But the frame is so much stronger, and it's a proven wheeling machine!! I can't not do it!!

Nope!! It'll be titled as an 81 CJ 8. The VIN from the JK is permanently dead. Any fire or flood in Alberta disqualifies the vehicle from ever being registered or owned again. And since the body and VIN I'm using is all CJ 8, that's what she will be.
