Well, I guess denial is no longer an option... I have to accept that I have a problem.

Last week, I picked up a '53 Willys project. My dad drove one of these on a ranch when he was growing up (and he even had one for a short time when I was a kid).

He's got Alzheimer's now, and memories come and go, but his ranch memories are always at the front of his mind. He's been talking about that old Willys pickup for quite a while now, so I decided to find a project that is close enough to running that we can have fun with it, but not enough that he can get in it and drive it away.

Boy, is he excited! I have a feeling some of my other projects just got sidelined for the summer. :sneaky:

Unfortunately, the Willys was part of a package deal. To get the '53 pickup, I also had to take a '97 Wrangler.

I've never really been interested in this generation of Jeep, but now that I'm poking around at it, I think it might be kind of fun!

I was planning to flip this little beastie, but now I'm thinking about cleaning it up for my grandkids to drive to school. There are a few mechanical issues to sort out, but I think a 4-cyl, 5-spd would be a good way for them to learn to drive.

These are in addition to two Scramblers and a Cherokee Chief.

What I'm really looking for is a '67 Ford highboy, but I keep getting waylayed by these Jeeps! :banghead: :rotfl:
Cheers!

Willys is cool. I've got a Willys Wagon that needs more work than yours. Too many projects is going around. Had two TJs. Wife and kids liked them. Fun and comfortable to drive. Looks like a solid California body on the truck. Great project!

What an awesome thing to do for your dad. That will be precious time well spent together over the summer!

There’s a guy down in Florida that just loves him some manual transmission Jeeps. He’s gonna chime in and say what a great idea it is to teach the kids on a MT and I agree 100%.
As far as your Dad, enjoy your time with him and the memories in the Jeep. Cherish them and make the Jeep rides happen. Ask me how I know…..

Thanks guys, I'm looking forward to spending time with him on this... and I really hope to take him driving in it by the end of summer.

@Belizeit, I'm going to show that picture to my dad, and let him know that is our goal!

Wish I had some more pictures of it. This is him camping out in Arizona. Maybe near the Sedona area. IMG_1518.jpeg I wish I had better quality. Picture of a picture.

I love this story. I sure miss my dad. We worked on a couple of Land cruiser FJ 40 projects. He love those FJ’s. He thought I was crazy for preferring the Scrambler over the FJ’s. What he was forgetting was my first car was a Scrambler. At the age of 16, I had a LOT of good times in that Scrambler! Enjoy the ride. Look forward to watching this project with your dad. Thanks for sharing.
