My brother

My brother was found dead in his house yesterday. He lived alone and had been dead for some time, most likely from a heart attack. His landlord was concerned because they hadn't seen him in several days. He had a history of heart problems - 3 previous heart attacks and 2 mild stokes.
We talked him into moving over to the town of Spring Hope 2 years ago. My wife and I own a farm here and my wife inherited the house next door from her aunt. My parents have been living there for 5 years. We wanted my brother closer by because of his health.

His life had been a bit hard and I can't help beating myself up for not doing more for him.

2 1/2 years ago my sister was stabbed to death by a crack junkie in the kitchen of the church where she ran the Meals on Wheels program for the city of Rocky Mount, NC. He approached her asking for help. He was homeless and hungry. She made him a sandwich and called to make arraignments to get him a cot in a homeless shelter. To thank her for her help he stuck a large kitchen knive in her chest. She died immediately. He stole her cell phone , walllet and car. He later traded the cell phone for crack. The dealer was caught and so was the POS. He's doing 3 life sentences with no possibilty of parole. I want him dead and I want to be the one who kills him, but that will never happen. My mother's birthday was the next day after her murder.

The worse thing is the effect on my parents. My mother is 80 and my dad is 84. They've both pleaded with me to take care of myself. A parent's worse nightmare is surely to outllive their children. I regard myself as a Christian, but I firmly believe one does not pray for things for oneself, but rather one prays for the benefit of others. However, I find myself asking the Lord to keep me alive as long as my parents are alive. They surely could not survive losing all of their children.

I'm crying like a baby right now and glad no one is here to see me.

I'm really sorry to hear this Robert. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Robert,

My Heart, Prayers and Tears go out to you and you’re Family

I am so sorry for your loss and will keep your story and sorrow in mind today. Try to look back on the joy in your brother’s life. And find some way to smile on those memories to help you get through this challenging time

Your sister sounded like she was a wonderful woman and cared and loved others the way I wish that I could. I can understand your desire’s towards the killer and would be right there with you wanting retribution, but think about this a little…forgiveness is not for the person your hatred is for but for yourself and your mental and physical well being. Please find some way to let the anger go so that your prayers for more years can answered

James

I can't begin to imagine what you've been going through. I hope somehow you and yours can find some peace after all of this.

Wow Robert what a tragedy,so sorry to hear about your brother. Your sister's story is very heartbreaking as well as hard to understand. Why would someone do that to one who was only trying to help them? How could God let this happen while she was serving Him? I know that we will never know the answers this side of heaven but be strong and keep your faith. i really feel there is alot of wisdom in what James said in the previous post about unforgiveness,it will hold you hostage and eat you up. We here at the Martin's house will pray for you and you parents!

Robert, I know words probably don't help at a time like this, but I will pray that the Lord give you the strength to cope with your losses.
Peter

Robert,

You have my sincere condolences on the loss of your brother and sister. Words are inadequate to express the sadness and anguish I feel for you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Robert, my heart sank the second I read the title of your post because it brought back the memory of what you went through with your sister. I'm so horribly sorry to hear this and I can only imagine your family's sadness and how hard this must be for your parents.

FWIW, there's a Dr. Seuss quote that I try to live by in situations like this, it's how I got through my mom's stroke/coma last year. It's basically what folks are saying here:

"Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened."

I feel that's the only real way to move past something like this, take solace in and remember all the great times, good memories, wonderful occasions. Dwell on how they lived and not how they left. Fill yourself with the best times you had with them, work to think of the best memory you can when things feel overwhelming and dark. You could share those good thoughts with your family, help them remember the great things, talking about those times does help, been there myself and it was a great comfort.

Take care my friend, prayers going out to you and your family.

I don't think there's much that can be said to help, but I'm thinking about you and your family. My condolences...

Robert- so sorry to hear of your loss. My heart and prayers are with you.

Robert,
I have respect and admiration for your transparency and trust with this group of friends. I can't imagine what you must be going through. My thoughts and prayers have been with you throughout the day. I when through a tough time in 2006, my father shot my step mother and then himself, 3 months later my 3 month old son passed away unexpectedly. When things happen that are out of our control, draw closer to God. 2 Corinthians 12:9 comes to mind.

But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

It sounds like that is what you are doing, putting your faith in Him.

Thank you...

This may sound a bit odd but Thank you Robert. By sharing your "real" troubles it has shed light on the lack of importance placed on the lesser "issues" in my own life. Empathy from me to you...

I am so saddened by all you have endured. I am so humbled by what others have shared and their words of encouragement that trying to add to what has already been said would seem futile. But, my prayers go to you and your family.

Robert, I am sorry for your loss. May Grace and Peace from God be with you, your family and friends.

Robert,

Words, at times like these, are never adequate but like so many others my heart goes out to you and your family in this time of loss. We live in a fallen world where so many things happen that are hard to understand or accept. May God grant you and your family peace, healing and strengthen your faith. All fo you will be in our prayers.

Richard

Robert - I'm very sorry to hear of the hard times your family has been through. I think the other folks on this board have passed along some great words of wisdom. I wish the best for you, your parents, and the rest of your entire family.
